While at the same time, the 2 hack players, Welsh and Stevens, were playing major roles in getting a team to the preliminary final.

And for the record, Stevens has had the kind of season, which almost makes me laugh that we only had to give up McCartney for him.

Stevens is the hardest working CHF in the league and never ever stops working. Infact it IS you who doesn't have a clue because a lot has changed since Stevo left NM. Gary Ayres has developed him into a hard working player which admittedly, he wasn't when he came to the club. I believe Stevens would in some ways be relieved Carey is coming to the club because it releases a very big weight off his shoulders as he has been carrying our forward line all year. Stevens will thrive when he is given the second best defender each week.

Jason McCartney COULD have been a great player for the Crows - if he had learn't to control is bloody temper and not get reported so many times! And if my memory serves me he was the last player (prior to Jason Cloke) to miss out on a Grand Final (for the Kangaroos) because he was suspended!

Mark Stevens is an absolute gem - the difference between him at North and now is that we actually have faith in his ability. Not like North who chose to play him in the reserves. He is a fantastic player he has won our Best Team Man trophy twice and came runner up and third in our Best and Fairest int he last two years. Sorry mate, but I would take Mark Stevens over Jason McCartney every time - no question about it.

Scott Welsh wasn't given a lot of time and he had some personal problems back in Adelaide which didn't allow him to be at his best. He has taken his chances at Adelaide and is a very important part of our side. He is another great player for us.


Wayne Carey will be an asset and both Mark Stevens and Scott Welsh will enjoy playing with him again!

Still doesn't change the fact that you would struggle to find a Crow fan who would want McCartney back for Stevens. Stevens is currently a better CHF (& CHB for that matter) than McCartney, who hasn't got the brains to play CHF like Pagan tried this year. McCarrtney's best value is as a negating backman & Colbert took his spot in defence - hence he ended in the reserves, relegated behind even the likes of Mick Martyn!

Yes I can say the same my friends.....North Melbourne are a proud club, full of tradition and rich in history....Unlike your commercilised football team. Our dedication to survive is incredible and considering we are probally the only club to go without the facilites that you, brisbane, sydney and west cpast have, we are doing might well....This will show by us sticking around....Yes, we aren't a club the has lot of money, it has been stated alot, but we'll survive, we always pull through the hard times..... Think you will find that North under Pagan has traded for many so called "rejects" over the years & done well out of it, just like other clubs. ie. Burton, Abraham, Grant, Rocca, etc. Just because a player has been traded & struggled at the previous club doesn't automatically make them a dud (unless their name is D Gallagher). Stevens was one of the better CHF in the league last year. Look at the stats if you are capable of reading! ***** head

As for Mark Stevens-McCartney the trade was a win-win. Another poster mentioned how at North the club didn't have faith in him and that's dead right. He should have been given CHB from 1997 onwards but it didn't occur and I'm pleased he is showing what I always thought he was capable of. In a similar sense McCartney has been good value, although he was played out of position all year. Welsh was always going to leave for SA so it was worthwhile involving him in part of the Colbert deal, even though I ddin't want to lose him at the time...he is more than capable of a 50 goal season next year
