BASKETBALL Australia has appointed Phil Smyth and Jan Sterling as national coaches of the Boomers and Opals respectively, each for a four-year term.

BA president John Maddock made the announcement in Melbourne this morning saying the pair brought the expertise to the game for which they had been searching.

Smyth becomes only the Boomers' eighth coach and is the fourth man appointed to the position in the last 30 years.

He is also the second national coach to have represented Australia as a player following Lindsay Gaze.

Smyth played a record 345 games for the Boomers after his debut as a 19-year-old in 1977.

Sorry mate, but the man you hate and have reffered to as a pig, is the new Boomers coach for the next 4 years. I know you wanted Alan Black or anybody but Smyth, but thankfully BA have gone against your better judgement and decided to go with the best coach in the NBL. Oh no Jod, What happen to your man Alan, whats his last name. You told us he was the best coach in Australia. Well I guess that just wasn't good enough to get him the job. Maybe he should of refused to play against Magic as well. Thats if he ever played basketball, I wouldn't know because I don't even know who Alan, whats his last name is.

This could be the beginning of the end from the Wildcats as the Sixers make their run home to become Champions for the 3rd time in 4 years.

Who cares what happens during the season. Our team doesn't need to have big winning streaks or finsh top. The only thing that matters is what happens in the playoffs and as Adelaide has proven before they don't need to finish top to win the championship. Perth can win all the games and break all the records they want but if they don't win the championship series, it means nothing.

What did Black do to deserve the job?? Help stuff up this year's campaign?? Suck up to Barry Barnes for 4 years?? Smyth DESERVED to be Boomers coach and thankfully he is.

Last year, around this time, the Sixers were on an 11 game winning streak themselves, and had just smashed the Titans and Wildcats. And we all know what happened so don't start counting your chickens before they hatch.(I can't believe I just wrote that)

Where's Jod, I'd love to hear his opinion on all this.

BTW- Max Power, if you don't give a stuff, then don't read past the first post mate.

Sorry being away for a couple of days. Umm its not like it was a big secret, we all knew Pig Boy Smyth would get it. Looks like Australia will be stuck with underachievers for a while longer now.

Real basketball fans who know the game knows Black is a better coach. To coach the wildcats to 12 straight victories without the most valuble player in the league (Paul Rogers) is pretty damn good. And when we win this years title and go back to back you adelaide folk will finally realise that the best basketball city in Australia is Perth!

Re that little line about people who know basketball... how many times have the TV commentators said Adelaide's home crowd are the most knowledgeable fans in Australia? I guess we DO know who the best coach is after all, Basketball Australia have just confirmed our opinion. lol

And as for winning streaks. I think the 36ers had one last year, and then staggered at the end of the season. Watch out Wildcats!

GoEagles, watching the news tonight they had Wollongong on top of the ladder. So what are you trying to tell us, your a Wollongong supporter who lives in Perth.

Knowledgeble basketball fans such as myself realise what a dud Alan Black actually is. Remember his unsuccessful stints at Illawarra and Sydney?? He was such a good coach back then as well I suppose?? How many titles exactly did he win with those clubs?? None. He had to come to Perth, a perennially strong, playoff contender to finally win a championship.

Pig boy Smyth, as you call him (pigs are actually very intelligent animals, much smarter than Black anyway), took over a struggling Adelaide team and led them to back to back championships, with another on the way. This without any previous coaching experience!! I think it's obvious who is the better coach.

Ant - lets talk about best this and best that at the end of the year when we win our back to back titles. So say were all collecting our pensions and so forth we have a coach who is useless and yet we go on a 12 game winning streak without Paul Rogers. I pity you and your pethetic Adelaide team.
