Would've been better value if they checked to see if they were more likely to be criminals etc :roll eyes:

I think we know some people go overboard with it but in most cases people are just showing a bit of pride in their country - why try to link that with racism?

Because a lot of racist pigs like to drape themselves in nationalist symbols. Such as the flag.

I'd say 90% of people wearing stuff like that are doing it for the right reasons.

Personally I find people using the flag as a cape in very bad taste. Not racist, just disrespectful. I don't think a flag should be a comedic prop.

Well how about the professor putting that message out rather than trying to associate displays of patriotism with racism.

I agree as I said that some go overboard but there seems to be another agenda going on with this survey and critics of the 90%.
 
I'll be heading to the TEAC oval to play a 20/20 cricket game against Port Melbourne Cricket Club. (Golden Point CC being the club I play for)

Get a feed and beers after the game and then head back to Ballarat on the bus with the boys. (I'm playing so wont be drinking on the way but I'll try to make up for it on the way back)

Doesn't get much more aussie than Beers, Food and Cricket on Australia Day.

So if you're bored come down and enjoy the festivities.

Well, I am currently sitting around at 7pm. Will probably watch a movie, and then go to bed. Tomorrow I will go to work.

Yeah, not much in the way of festivities over here in the US.

On the upside, I don't have to put up with whingeing prats who might associate any potential enjoyment of the day with being a colonialist racist.

To be honest, I've been out of the country for eight years, so maybe things have changed with the way the day is celebrated. But for me and my family, it was always a low-key day, with maybe a little bit of a reflection on our good fortune, and more importantly, just relaxing and enjoying ourselves. So I am not really sure what exactly is being 'packaged and sold' these days.

I has become very jingoistic and contrived mate, believe me.

............AND, as is the way with the Australian political scene, it was done without any decent input from the people.
 
It's a totally meaningless day to me. Enjoy the 'long weekend' but the day doesn't imbue any sense of national pride or the like for me.

Interestingly, India also celebrate their national day today - Republic Day. Mmmm a republic, there's an idea.

A "republic" consists of something more than altering a couple of words in a colonial constitution.

The Australian people knew they were getting played at the last referendum.
 
I was discussing this today with a bunch of guys at the club.

To us, Australia Day is a big deal because we sail in the Sydney Harbour Regatta. At 176 years old, it's the oldest continuously-run regatta in the world. We've all sailed in it for years, as our fathers, grandfathers and (in some cases) great-grandfathers have before us.

And Australia Day on Sydney Harbour really is something special - after all, it celebrates the founding of our city. There are hundreds of sailboats, even more spectator craft, the traditional Ferry Race, the Tall Ships Parade, the midday guns at the Opera House - really, the pageantry is magnificent. Far and away one of my favourite days of the year.

But we all agreed that if we weren't out on the water and involved in the festivities, it wouldn't mean much to us.

I do know that on the couple of Australia Days I haven't sailed, I haven't given much of a toss about the whole thing at all. I think it's one of those days that unless you have a personal tradition of something you do on the day that you enjoy, it's just a load of empty nationalism that nobody really cares about.
 
Successful Australia Day. Played a Sh*tload of backyard cricket (got rather sunburnt and am sore as hell, but copping that on the chin), sweet as bbq, and managed to avoid every minute of the JJJ Sh*tathon. Great day. Just not looking forward to working the next 2 days being all sore and burnt.
