Phew, glad I'm not the only one feeling like this.

It's a no big deal day for me. In the past it was a case of "oooh long weekend coming up, who's going down to Lorne or wherever?" amd "woohoo day off work".

No doubt they were acting like idiots but the guy who conducted those interviews and wrote that article is a massive twat. He's making out that overall Australians are massive w***ers, to which he may have a point but if he can say that about Australians then surely we can say that about the english. They have a worse reputation than us for good reason.

It shits me how schools have chosen to stop celebrating Christmas because not everybody does..obviously Islam and Jewish schools are different. But public schools where I would guess 50% would celebrate Christmas (not the religious aspect, just the Santa/fun/family aspect), it's a bit over the top.

As for the rest, was ****ing hilarious. 'Australia Day is being torn apart'....no, if anything, it's been torn apart by the horrific marketing aimed at it.

And we will always have an Australia Day, it's just the date that people want to change. Interestingly, the only minority calling for it to be changed (I realise people of other races sympathise and agree with them) are the Aboriginals. Which makes the line 'IF ITS SO RACIST FOR US TO FLY A FLAG HOW IS IT NOT RACIST FOR THEM TO BELIEVE IN THEIR COUNTRIES' become even more unbelieveably stupid.
 
Who exactly is saying this it's racist to fly an Australian flag? I've never actually seen or heard anyone say that. Is it just like, all the bigots with an agenda to push make it up, or am I missing something?

The was a news report a few days ago about a study done at UWA that found that people who fly flags on their car on Australia day are more likely to hold racist attitudes than people who don't. It was of course breathlessly reported on ACA and TT as "OMG those lefties said that flag flyers are racist!!!!"

The survey linked flying the flag to racism. I don't think you need to be a bigot to object to being linked with racism.

I would have thought there was an agenda behind the survey rather than behind people objecting to being linked with racism.

You could take any sector and do a survey to link them with undesirable attributes.

There can be no doubt that some, not all of the flag fliers are probably a touch redneck. But in a lot of ways we only have ourselves to blame for this, we have allowed our national flag (and the Southern Cross) to become symbols for for something that most of us find abhorrent. It's time that right thinking Australians took back possession of our national symbols from those who wish to subvert it's iconography toward their own odious agenda.

The only thing left to do is give the anglos their beloved union jack flag/southern cross and the rest of us, the new australia, embrace a new flag that encapsulates everything good that is Australia in 2012.

As it stands the flag is creating a massive divide and will only continue to give the champions of the white australia policy a bigger voice while alienating the rest of us.

And lets have a conscientious vote for a change and treat the changing of the flag as a democratic process.
 
Agree, our flag is embarassing. Look at how great Canada's flag is? It's shameful that we haven't changed it.

Even the average pom thinks we're stupid for not changing it.
