Most of the Poms find it absolutely laughable that given the chance to become a republic we chose to continue to attach ourselves to the aprons strings of a country and head of state that is 12 000 miles away.

Howard did a very good job at wording the referendum question so that it was practically imposible for a republic to have emerged -

True that was sheet

What will you do if some rednecks misbehave while flying the new flag? Get another new one?

Easy, ignore them.

Just like it's easy to ignore redknecks in america who proudly fly the confederate flag. It's just a guide for me to ignore these people and don't give them the time of day!

Impossible atm with the australian flag.

Don't get it - if you had a new flag that embraces everything good and some rednecks were using it as a symbol of racism whatever you could ignore that [why?] but not so with the current flag- what's the diff?

New flag doesnt carry any stigmas, old one does hence the racists can not identify with the new flag.

BTW Why would the racists use a new flag when they could use the old one?

If anything it helps weed out the true racists in our society.

I would have thought whatever the flag people will identify it as a symbol of their country and if their racist attitude is it's our country so f off, doesn't matter what flag they were using.

Unless you are saying that the new flag is going to be pushed as a symbol of non - racism so yeah hopefully that would work.

You didn't say how / why you could ignore racists identifying with your new flag?

Why would any racist use a new flag? Hence why i didnt answer your question.

I thought my comment about giving them the old flag or allowing them to use as their own flag would have answered your questions?

Again why would a racist want to use the new flag?

I guess as I said because it would still identify with their country and they might still like to use it to say f off from my country????? Who knows what they would do.

You did mention the possibility of that happening to start with which is why I asked how you could ignore it if it happened.

This is pretty rough and quick photoshop job, but I'd quite happily live under the below flag...

I agree!

Also the aboriginal flag is copyright and there is no way that the indigenous people of australia will ever allow their flag, their only symbol which represents them in modern day 'ostralia, to be taken away from then to appease the whites - again.

Not a chance in hell.

Why are all those wanting to change the flag because 'racists' use it as a symbol of white pride or whatever not also saying the same re: the Aboriginal flag and how that flag is used?

The Australian flag represents a whole country, the Aboriginal flag represents a race. Which is more inclusive and non-divisive?

What else do the aboriginal people have? Are they not entitled to some kind of symbolism that represents them? Or do you want to deny them that too?

There is nothing wrong with the Aboriginal flag, nor is there anything wrong with Aboriginal people having a flag.

The reason people don't like the Australian flag is that it contains Union Flag, which not everyone identifies with. I've yet to see anyone complain about the Southern Cross of 7 pointed star... The Aboriginal Flag and Union Flag are in the same boat in that they are both relevant to some people within Australia and both relevant to Australian history. Do either deserve to feature as or on the national flag? Well that's why we have debates such as this year after year...

Personally I favour something like this:

I think the point he was making is that the display of the Aboriginal flag alongside the Australian flag [incorrectly] indicates that the people represented by the Aboriginal flag are not Australian.

Further that to be represented by the Aboriginal flag you need to be aboriginal whereas to be represented by the Australian flag you only need to be an Australian citizen - therefore the Aboriginal flag is racist as it discriminates based on race.

I tend to agree with Seppb - I don't really give a shit what flag we have. I was born in Australia, I'm a citizen and a resident and the flag represents me. If it was any other design it would still represent me.

I only get sucked into stupid arguments when people start saying stupid things like "it doesn't mean anything to people", "its wrong cos it has the union jack", "a new flag will mean racists wont use it as a racist symbol" etc. etc.

I know what he meant, my point is they havent been left with much and hence their pride was taken away. The aboriginal flag is all they have.

But hey i don't expect non aboriginal australians to understand nor care, as has been shown in the last 200 years.

Lets take away their flag, condem it as it stands for racist behaviour and force them to adopt to what we think is best for them. wow sound familiar.

Australia has a long way to go before they accept their indigenous people unlike most other countries who have embraced theirs.
