To amend the Flags Act 1953 in order to criminalise the desecration, dishonouring or destruction of the Australian National Flag (or ‘the Flag’), the Australian Merchant Navy Ensign, the Royal Australian Navy Ensign and the Royal Australian Air Force Ensign.

Why would anyone take a flag to the BDO any rate? To show their support for the Australian bands? Will these people boo the international bands? Why would you take a flag? Maybe it is your intention to be provocative?

I'm not a huge patriot or a big fan of jingoistic flag waving, but I think it is a joke that you can't wave your country's flag at an event within your own country! 
The better approach would have been to issue an Australian flag to everyone turning up and reduce its potential effect of being used by any gangs.

Their not syaing you can't do it, but bring the flag for the right reasons.
Precisely. Bringing the Australian flag to try and incite hatred against people you deem to be Unaustralian is reprehensible and should be encouraged.
The only issue I see is that the organisers should have known the media would blow this out of proportion and the less intelligent idiots would use it to prove that the "Australian way" is being threatened, and inciting more problems than would otherwise be the case.
I dont think there is anything wrong with being proud to be an Australian and showing that pride by wearing or waving an aussie flag...

That is a bill. It was introduced by Trish Draper and was not even debated by parliament. A similar bill was introduced in the House by Bronwyn Bishop last year. Neither were debated. Neither were voted on. Neither are law.

Personally, Cronulla pretty much forever tainted the bogan style aussie aussie aussie type crap for me, but this is a touch extreme, and will no doubt be fodder of the 'political correctness gone mad' brigade for years to come.

Contrary to the reports in the media, it was never our intention to disrespect the symbolism of the Australian or any other flag.
We are not banning the Australian flag but are simply discouraging its use for anti-social purposes at the Big Day Out.
In recent times, there has been an increased incidence of flags brandished aggressively and this has led to increased tension. Our only intention in discouraging this activity at the Big Day Out is to ensure that our patrons are not subjected to this aggressive behaviour.
With all this in mind and the aim to create a happy, peaceful MUSICAL event, organisers would like to request that fans please leave their flags at home.
The Big Day Out is not an Australia Day event, but a music festival showcasing music artists from around the world and aspires to unify people through music.
Unfortunately the media reports yesterday were not quoted accurately and we must thank the participating media for wasting everybody�s time including the Prime Minister John Howard, Premier Morris Iemma, NSW RSL President Don Rowe, Keysar Trad (a confidant of the Mufti Sheik Taj el-Dene Elhilaly) and Burt Lane of the Australian National Flag Association�.

It's disappointing that a well-meaning initiative is going to have the exact opposite effect due to morons in the media. It could have been better thought through by the organisers though.
Maybe he should check his English usage and said "I am asking people not to bring flags".
I think the media release is pretty good. It's when the mass media and politicians twist it, it becomes a mess.
