Whilst surfing the web, I came across a site;
http://www.worldfootballrankings.com/

which ranks the popularity of football leagues according to average crowds. It also ranks clubs according to average home crowds.

Anyway, the Australian Football League is the 2nd most popular football league in the world, behind the NFL. That means we average larger crowds then the English Premier League and all other European Soccer Competitions.

I find it interesting, that the Australian Rugby Union can describe us as a "ho-hum domestic competition" and degrade our league because were not an "international" sport, yet we are the second most "popular" football league in the world. In fact American Football isn't an "international" sport either. I think this puts an end to this rubbish about certain football codes being worse than others, because thay are not played at an equivalent level, in other countries.

What say you?

I see the bulldogs (who some would have you believe are in trouble) in the top 100 footy clubs in the world

SACK THE AFL Commission now - How incompetent are they !

Even Freo and North come in it the top 150 !

I'm sure that a lot of soccer fans in Europe would be surprised if they checked that site to see just how popular Australian football really is in Australia! All of the 16 AFL teams are in the top 150 football clubs worldwide. Not a bad achievement for a country of only around 19 million

Essendon draws bigger crowds than Collingwood.

It says on the web-site that the crowds are re-evaluated every six months at 31 Decemeber and 30 June.

This means the figure for Collingwood is based on Rounds 1-11 (or whenever June 30 was)

The official AFL attendances over the WHOLE season indicated that Essendon played in front of 1.1 Million (the most in the AFL), and our home game attendance were also the highest. We averaged over 50,000 per home game.

Remember, we don't play at the MCG like the Maggies do, so that figure is even more remarkable.

According to the Herald-Sun survey last week, 19% of Victorians barrack for the Bombers with Collingwood second on 14%. The gap is getting wider too !

A lot of well earned chest beating here guys. Haven't we done well.

Someone mentioned a site once which showed the rankings of all Aussie rules websites. Anyone remember it?

very interesting site.

i noticed that Australian Rules gets the second highest crowds out of any football code in the world, despite our tiny population (especially the victorian teams). only the NFL gets more people to the games.

1. NFL (USA - American Football)
2. AFL (Australia - Australian Football)
3. Premier League (England - Soccer)
4. Bundesliga (Germany - Soccer)
5. Sirie A (Italy - Soccer)
6. Verano (Mexico - Soccer)
7. CFL (Canada - Canadian Football)
8. Primera Liga (Spain - Soccer)
9. Division 1 (France - Soccer)
10. Division 1A (China - Soccer)

What is contained in these stats? New York - 19 clubs:no city hosts more than 2 NFL clubs.

Sydney - 32 clubs:is this all rugby league, union and soccer as well as the Swans?

Manchester - 15 clubs:there are only 2 Premier league clubs in Manchester. Does this stat include all the teams from the lower divisions?

London - 35 clubs plus Manchester 15 clubs=50 clubs:there are 38 clubs in the entire premiere division.

Another point to be remembered is that some of these stadiums are v.small, they are in highly populated areas. And it costs a hell of a lot to go to a soccer match. A Highbury season ticket is $1000. Most of the players in the major soccer leagues and the NFL are paid monstrous sums, even the nonentities get close to a million a year. Roy Keane was fined $428,000 last week and that was 2 weeks wages. Some of the players in Spain cost over $70m. By the time some of you read this post that will probably be even higher. Not trying to be a wet blanket here but there is a lot more to be considered than just the numbers of people who attend.

mic, they add up ALL footy codes in that city, even second tier comps.

i know it doesnt take into account the cost of tickets, size of stadiums etc, but surely that would be incredibly difficult to summise.

it also doesnt take into account our tiny population, so big crowds here compare very favourably to big crowds in very populated cities

MWAHAHAHA go the Tigers! The WORLDS SECOND BIGGEST AFL CLUB! 47,288 is the average crowd!

LOL look down the bottom Denmark average 107 ppl lol.

Richmond get bigger crowds then Liverpool and Leeds United just to name a few. Great site mate!

The Magpies are the 42nd rated team in the world and the top from the Australian Football League according to this site, the other AFL teams are as follows:

Collingwood - 42nd
Richmond - 46th
Essendon - 50th
Melbourne - 57th
Adelaide - 63rd
St.Kilda - 80th
Hawthorn - 85th
West Coast - 90th
Carlton - 96th
Western Bulldogs - 98th
Port Adelaide - 101st
Kangaroos - 104th
Sydney - 107th
Brisbane Lions - 116th
Geelong - 131st
Fremantle - 139th

Very good to see all Australian Football League teams making the top 150 of the top clubs in the world for attendances.

And I also had a look at the VFL teams in another section.

Box Hill has the best average attendance of 2068, Werribee has an average of 1980 while perhaps the most dissapointing of the average attendances is the Murray Kangaroos, with an average of just 464 at each of their games.

What year are these figures based on? I'm surprised the Saints averaged more people at their home games then us.

And how did they get the VFL attendances - normally they aren't even published!

Very good site.

This year the average Melbourne home crowd was a little over 27,000, nowhere near the supposed 41, 000

Richmonds average home crowd was just under 39,000, once again nowhere near the supposed 47,000

Collingwoods average crowd was slightly under 51,000, slightly more than the suggested 48,000.

Don't know when these crowds are taken from but they are not home crowds from 2002.
