A stuttering West Coast has employed the masterly coaching talents of goal-kicking sensation Austin Robertson.

One of the finest exponents of the prolifically used drop punt, the legendary full-forward is a part-time specialist goal-kicking coach.

I feel like this needs its own thread.

Austin Robertson Junior played 269 game for Subiaco and South Melbourne from 1962 to 1974. By the end of his career, Robertson finished with a tally of 1271 goals for both clubs, and currently holds the record as the highest goalscorer in WAFL history.

So, basically, we've employed one of the greatest full forwards in the history of Aussie rules to improve our scoring accuracy. Pretty exciting news to say the least.

Additionally, the article mentioned the following:
Robertson has previously offered his coaching services to Fremantle and was rejected.

6:37: Lachie Neale wins a holding the ball decision in the square and Connor Blakely plays on to shoot from the 50...and he misses. Freo have kicked 2.13 (23) and trail by 23.

I heard him on the radio once complaining that Freo wouldn't accept his help.

That was early in the year yeah? Thought i had heard him talk about it once on 6pr.

Good idea and can only help.

Now i hope we look for a specialist tackle coach too..

Not a bad move, he'd probably be one of the oldest coaches (part-time or otherwise) we've ever had I'm guessing. Hopefully he can help Waterman fix up his goalkicking accuracy.

'Prolifically used drop punt'... that's some nice word salad.

Oh yeah good news also re: the guy joining us.

The whole article was ****ed, to be fair. Talk about fattening out the point with some extra words. Just horrible journalism. Would hazard a guess the flog gets paid per word.

I hope in his experience he had run just about as much as the modern player when pushing up the ground and then running back to make an option and then being timed to get the kick away when going through that perfect procedure.
Seems like a time long gone if you ask me.

Hopefully it works.

I think it's an undeniable fact that the bloke understands how to kick a footy. The physics of it don't change because you are tired from running. If anything a good routine and technique is the best foundation to perform under stress - physical and mental..

Hopefully he can impart that knowledge.

This guys as old as Keyser, what's he know other than wrecking the economy?
He was a delight to watch when he used to play for Subiaco, and certainly knew how to get it through the big sticks. I remember going to watch him play when Subi played Sth Fremantle (the team I used to follow in the WAFL) long before the Eagles entered the VFL/AFL.
Austin Robertson writes an article every week in the "Post" on sport in general. Think he has a leaning towards Freo, but perhaps now he's working at the Eagles, he may change his colours;)!!

I think he was a player with a high footy IQ so lets hope he imparts something

Maybe we could hire the services of the AFL all time leading tackler

It's a shockingly written article...

"with a lightning fast lead and powerful grip to complete his dash into position"
"disciplined physical and mental preparation rounded into a rhythmic and athletic run-up into his set-shot kick"
"eradicate a decline in scoring proficiency"

Usually, people who try this hard to sound intelligent are actually knuckle-draggers with a thesaurus.

80% accuracy over his career...That's insane!
Welcome good sir!

I used to watch him play : revealing my age here as probably being older than Keys. He was a sensational footballer; one that I used to hate, simply because he was so good, and always did damage to my team, the mighty royals. he would kick goals from anywhere, and from a great distance out too.

What's wrong with this wording?

This article sounds like an old school article which doesn't cater for the modern verbal w***ery.

It hearkens back to the days of the old game reviews.

Though the word proficiency is just utterly horrible and should be banned.
Just piss it off please Jootube.

Hopefully all clubs follow.

Kicked 157 goals one year and under immense pressure from opposition players that used to belt the bejesus out of him on a weekly basis , best exponent of the drop punt I've seen
Did it pretty simple ran in a straight line towards the goals and kicked it straight
I once watched when Subi played Claremont , Wayne Reynolds was playing on him and Peter Hines was playing in the back pocket both were 6'4" and had knuckles that dragged on the ground ,they absolutely flogged him all day
He still kicked 6

Can remember reading one of his articles in the "Post" when he criticised Le Cras for changing his kicking technique (may have been last year, not sure?) when Le Cras kicking for goal went to the pack.
