Australia’s Confederations Cup bid the help of the four major football codes

How am I angry?

A 40,000 rectangular stadium in Perth would be a waste of money. That is a fact.

Is it a firm proposal? Ffs there is still discussion about whether it will be 4 sites or 6

Before we start talking white elephants, let's at least have a proposal to discuss so we know what is being rejected

Fwiw I don't think a 40k stadium would even be on the agenda for Perth once this starts being considered seriously (unless nrl commit to a new Perth team, and a stadium is proposed which can be reduced down post comp for the a league and nrl)

Well the original post in the conversation chain was suggesting that stadiums could be built in Adelaide and Perth as an alternative to the Adelaide Oval/Burswood.

All I'm saying is that would be a massive waste of money

Fair enough, I'd like more detail though

Hindmarsh and the Perth ground need an upgrade, but I agree 40k is too much. If they were 20k expandable to a one off 40k it would be a different proposition

As mentioned though, we are a long way from knowing if these two cities will even be hosting games in any bid

Play the damn games at the Adelaide Oval. Its in a better location, it has better transport facilities available. Build a new facility at hindmarsh and it will be a white elephant used only for soccer and once in a blue moon league matches.

I'm not a local, but I thought a redevelopment/replacement of Hindmarsh was needed just because the place is a hole (from what I've seen others say)?

It is a hole. But a new stadium hole? I admit im biased. I dont think the SA Government should be spending more on specialist soccer stadiums when its closing down emergenecy hospital departments to save money.

Just thinking. This could really suck for soccer.

People would cope with being pushed aside for the World cup, but the confederations cup?

AFL & NRL fans would riot.

Knowing that, it would be really tough to get the politicians onside.

Yep the Feds are still shitty on being conned by Lowy out of $43 million for a nothing result for the WC bid so I dont think they will be rushing to hand out any taxpayers money for a second rate comp.

The AFL will survive, they can either start the season early or finish it late, which is what they did when the Commonwealth Games was in Melbourne, play a few away games in a row, use it as an excuse to play a few games in emerging markets or use the local boutique stadia that should be around by then (via the proposed Arden St/Princes Park upgrades). Origin can move a game to NZ as they have been dying to do and that is all that will affect them as they are still doggedly holding on to most of their suburban venues.

It would probably be a positive for us in terms of making us more attractive for a future WC bid, the Asian Cup, though held out of NRL/AFL season, was a huge success and helped the economy greatly. We have plenty of international soccer tournaments here throught the year and I'm sure AFL and NRL are strong enough that, even were they to be forced to take a month off in the middle of their seasons they would easily survive.

Why should the AFL give anything up?
Soccer is a competitor for the sporting dollar and in business and yes sports entertainment is big business when it comes to the AFL NRL you dont give your business opponents an advantage ever!
If soccer is so popular in Australia it would have its own 50,000 plus stadiums in every state by now but it aint that popular to be able support that sort of infrastructure but wants to bludge off stadiums built on the back of decades of support from Cricket,AFL and NRL fans.Tell the whining Gallop and Lowy to go and get stuffed.

Eh? The perth ground just got an upgrade. Never mind that no government is going to spend tens of millions on a temporary upgrade for a confederations cup.

We're not talking about a major tournament here. There are very few tourist dollars to be had.

I see the local soccer authorities are considering seeking compensation for the disruption caused to the A league due to the 2022 soccer WC now being moved to Nov/Dec of that year.

FOOTBALL Federation Australia will consider asking for financial compensation from FIFA after the sport’s world governing body announced that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be switched to winter with a December 18 final.

Anyone else see the irony here?

I seem to recall that moving the tournament from June/July was impossible thereby necessitating the total disruption of the AFL season.

Oh how times have changed.

Compensation?

Surely they should just be happy to be doing their bit to help 'the world game'....

Do FIFA actually require all member nations to halt their season whilst the World Cup is on?

Not sure, but you would be doing it regardless (too many player exists)

This is much more political. All nations bid based upon a summer comp, with people ridiculing a bid from Qatar at that time period given it was too hot. FIFA and the bid assured everyone that it would be held in summer, and a combination of airconditioned open stadiums and airconditioned footpaths would make it viable.

It wasn't viable, and the inevitable change occurred.

A League issues are minor compared to the Europeans now. The WC is likely to be at the time for some of the biggest matches, so club are looking at major losses. Everyone is either trying to fight it, or is lining up for more Qatari cash

I'd be surprised if these leagues aren't getting slagged off by soccer lovers for not helping the game out.

After all, if the reactions to the AFL's requests for compensation at the time of the bid a few years ago are anything to go by they should be pilloried for not stepping out of the way immediately and for having the temerity to think they might be entitled to anything.

There was nothing wrong with the afl wanting compo, every knew it was deserved and warranted

The issue was people thinking it would be $1b+ that was laughed at

Yeah ... nah that's not how I remember it.

I was actually following this pretty closely. Some people were expecting compo of ridiculous proportions (fed by the HUN).

It was insane because I remember some were thinking conpo would exceed what we received annually in tv rights

My recollection is that the actual requirements of the bid were not clearly outlined in the beginning.

For instance there was a proposal to rectangularise the MCG at one stage by lowering the surface and putting in more seating. Docklands was also mentioned as a possible stadium.

If those 2 things happened then the compensation outcome would be far higher than if they did not. And this was all at the whim of FIFA apparently.

It wasn't the AFL's fault that the bid process was structured in such a way.

No argument with any of that, and I think it's one thing that hurt the ffa. While they were still figuring out stadium options, availability, and works, any talk of compo is impossible in precise terms. Hun ran with that though and made it look like whole stadia were going to be out of commission for months with no compo at all

Well the thing is no one knows even now. FIFA has just changed the dates of the 2022 soccer WC and everyone else has to live with it.

It's a joke they even did that, euro leagues face big issues now

USA bid should rightly be livid
