AUSSIE, AUSSIE, AUSSIE, OI, OI, OI

Great result for the Socceroos, let's just hope that they can build on this result and come the time they have to play the fifth best South American team produce the same result

Maybe in a few years time we will look back and thank scotland for giving us a break. (by agreeing to play us, that is - I wonder how big the crowd was)

Let's hope England can be persuaded to do the same, especially as the aussies are the only ones in history to give a popular vote in favour of a reigning monarch

Even Botham would approve of that one.

Pity the soccer team couldn't produce the goods in the home country for the olympics.

Still with soccer, whatever happened to that Socceroos coach we had from England and he was really good, I'm fairly sure he was the coach against Iran a few years back - why was he sacked/quit?

Nup, none of those three by my understanding.
Fantastic result by the lads, hopefully now some of the other europeans will notice that we can mix it with (some) of them and release our players for our games. highly optimistic though. Stuff you Leeds Utd.

I'm going to assume you aren't that familiar with soccer, and assume that you didn't see the game that cost us a place at France '98. 2-0 up, 20 minutes to go. Iran equalised twice and progressed at our expense. The english manager at the time, Terry Venables, failed to get Australia through to the WC in what must have been the easiest qualification path for Oz for years (ie to play off against the 4th place asian team to get in). Didn't do much good if you ask me.

How can you equalize twice when the opposition is 2-0 up?

El Tel was unlucky - the first goal was miles offside.

No Viduka (tons of recent goals) Kewell (last year's young player of the year in the Priemership, Bosnich (old fat lazy dumb turd... with some talent) and Craig Brown and we still beat, nay embarrassed the Scots.

Thought the young English side chosen were desparately unlucky not to at least draw in Turin - one blatant penalty to Heskey ignored to pacify the Northern Italian Nazis factor no doubt... England, for the 1st time in 3 years (Argentina - WC98), didn't look like hacks - bizarre.

Sbagman,

I think you are being a bit harsh. I lay the blame solely on Soccer Australia, and their failure to organise good solid matches, against quality opposition. I mean games against Tunisia (although an underated team) etc bringing achieving a no loss record in the lead up to the qualifiers wasn't going to achieve much. They had the skill, the coach, the match in their hands (let's be honest), but so many blokes were not match fit (ala Vidmar), and the lack of pressure in their lead up matches didn't prepare them for what occured on that night.

Another point I find interesting though, is the fact that England is going with a foreign coach from next year (for the first time), while a soccer minnow (Australia) has a appointed its first ever home grown coach. I mean, with all due respect, who's going to perform better (disregarding the financials of it for a moment), an ex-player with experience in Belgium and who flopped as a coach after his first season title in the lowly NSL, or a coach from overseas with a wealth of experince and tactical nous? This may seem a bit rich after yesterday morning's victory, but I just don't think they've chosen the right avenue in this instance.

BTW- a documentary on the whole lead up and including that fateful match is going to be shown on SBS in a couple of weeks. I caught a couple of minutes of it, and it doesn't look to bad at all.

The second goal in Scotland Australia was definitely onside, but the only reason we got it was that Craig Brown was stupid enough to put Colin Hendry on. I think Tom Boyd mentioned that after the game.
More big news in The Age today. Australia is going to play Catalonia some time in December at Nou Camp! This will be a huge game, as most of our players have never played anything in Spain since the Barcelona Olympics. (Paul Okon being the exception) Catalonia aren't a national team, but they did beat Nigeria 3-1, so they'll be very good opposition, and great preparation for the Confederations' Cup.

As for El Tel, we had to get rid of him. He was being paid too much for us to miss out on France 98. Now, we have a quality Aussie manager, who'll probably be around for twenty years.

Hey guys

You know I don't care much for soccer but I do remember that fateful game in Melbourne against Iran to qualify for France'98.

Its no use blaming El Tel, Soccer Australia, UEFA or any other scapegoat.

The blame for such a shocking capitulation must rest fairly and squarely on the Socceroos back four and the goalkeeper.
- These were the guys that failed to man up properly on the dangerous Iranian striker

- These were the guys that allowed thier concentration to slip at the most important time in the game.

- these were the guys that failed miserably to apply decent tackles on each rare occasion the Iranians got the ball.

Don't blame anyone else except the people on the spot that failed to play the game properly and made stupid, fundamental errors.

Who cost us a place in France '98 ?

The Socceroo goalkeeper, fullbacks and half backs thats who - nobody else.

cheers

I was at the Australia vs Iran game too....I have never heard a 90,000+ crowd file out of the MCG so silently. Australia should have buried Iran with the number of chances they created, but the turning point of the game was when that idiot pest, Peter Hore, went onto the ground and cut down the goal netting. Up to then, the momentum was all Australia's way, but the stoppage allowed Iran to regroup (while Australia seemed to lose focus) and they got a quick goal soon after the restart.

Ooops, you can't equailse twice- sorry, it was a late night.
We'll agree to disagree on the Venables thing. I think if you're 2-0 up you shut the game down, as most successful European nations would. We missed out on the WC and that's that- I think some of the blame lays with Venables.

sbagman - I'm not a soccer fanatic but as far as being 'familiar with soccer' I do know what competitions are on, the NSL results and the basics in rules. And while I wasn't 'live' at the game against Iran, I did see it on TV.

Do you have Terry Venables coaching record for Australia? Or know possibly where to find out?

When Australia was 2-0 they should of maintained that lead - you cant blame the coach for letting the side blow that lead, it's the players fault not the coach on the sidelines.

GE,

While I can't say my knowledge of the game is perfect, I did watch that game and I have to say that, yes, the players made mistakes at the back, etc etc. But I think with 20 mins to go and SO MUCH at stake, everyone should have been behind the ball and shut the game down. This is common sense. The Aussies kept attacking the Iranians, it was fantastic to watch, but it demonstrated a naievity (sp?) that I was surprised would be shown by a coach of the stature of Venables. Yes, it is hard for us for a huge number of reasons, I think the main one is that we simply don't get enough tough games against tough opposition. And as long as we stay in the Oceanic confederation, it will stay this way. The Europeans have regular tournaments, the South Americans, the North Americans, the Africans and the Asians. We have the likes of Tonga and Western Samoa in our confederation. We need more serious competition.

This is slightly beside the point. I certainly don't wish to make out that I know any more than anyone else, but I thought that the game should have been over at 2-0. And Venables always knew that he was going to be judged on whether or not Australia went to the WC. We failed, and he must accept some of that blame. He was paid well, and got away with alot. In hindsight (easy!) I don't think it was the right decision.

I hope Farina can get our boys there. Yes, he is quite young, but I think there are so many things hampering soccer in Australia and Farina, or anyone else for that matter can only do so much.

Nice to see footy fans taking an interest in soccer. I must admit I find I have my allegiances torn between the two, but enjoy both for the different things they offer.

I don't know ElTel's exact record, but remember our only losses under him were against Brazil in the final of the Confederation's Cup, and I think we also lost a friendly to Croatia, who went on to make the semi-finals. Can't remember if we lost or drew that game.
