I would have removed one of the bowlers for Nevill cause you know if Holland is the reserve spinner it's probably not worth having a reserve spinner. (of course Holland gets more love than Paine from CA....). If you insist on having two spinners you can easily remove Cutting and not really lose any sweat over it.

IPL based selection, Smith has been killing it Christian has not been. May have also decided considering there's 6 seamers in the squad Smith covers more bases. But Clarke has to actually want to bowl Smith....

Foxsports, Cricinfo and CA facebook exploding atm. Probably should check twitter too, I'm sure Smith is trending on there.

Don't know about Smith in the ODI side but will be interesting seeing if his new found hitting ability in the IPL was a fluke or the new Smith.

there's other selections that are worth far more discussion tbh. From aus a - obviously Paine. He's barely played for ages, and it's not like they weren't any other keepers pushing for selection. The spinners - Lyon's the test spinner, Beer's the deputy. You'd think for an australian a tour Beer would be at least one of the two spinners picked. On a related note to that, Ed Cowan and Nathan Lyon have played most of our recent tests, if you pick those two what about Warner, Wade and Siddle? Rob Quiney should have been picked in front of Davis, Cooper and Klinger (Quiney gets in over Davis just because of a tad more longevity. Cooper's in there based on one match where even maddinson scored runs, Klinger was a bit better than Cooper last season but still is lucky to be there instead of a) Quiney or b) Christian for me, given his age. If you're picking him what about Voges?). And there's all the seamers. (5 would have been enough for 4 games, Cutting out for a back-up keeper). I suppose Cowan captain over Bailey too is a bit weird.

For the ODI squad, again, so many seamers. Hilf or Lee out, Actually, I guess that's really the only thing. The whole Forrest in the ODI team has been handled a bit badly, but he's out now and I don't think many will be too upset. With Watson in the team and now also MJ back I don't really think it's a surprise to see Smith there instead of Christian.

If you're only picking 5 seamers, like I would, Cummins, Pattinson, Johnson and Starc are fairly obviously in front of him, so then it's Bird v Cutting. Bird interests me a bit more. And of course, where Cutting was pushing for his selection Cummins and Johnson weren't fit, and Pattinson and Starc hadn't made their test debuts. They have, and obviously Pattinson has proven himself while Starc was shown enough at stages for him to stay around these sort of squads.

Coulter-Nile's 10th in line - Siddle, Harris, Hilf, Cummins, Pattinson, Starc, MJ, Bird, Cutting - so if plays in the Ashes something's gone either terribly wrong or he's gonna take about 80 wickets nest season....and MJ's gonna be taking a butt load of wickets at all their home games next season.

Beer's the obvious one. For the batsmen, well Davis, Forrest, Cooper and Burns are in this squad based, pretty much, on one good season, so yeah don't rule out the batsmen outside those squads. Our batting stocks are pretty weak right now, it doesn't take much to jump to the top of the queue. This time last year it was Maddinson and Lynn in there, and those two might be in the 2nd's when the first games of next season start

oh and, Nevill and Christan too, I guess.

Any players not in that 'A' squad who'd be in contention for the ashes 2013 tour? Coulter-Nile springs to mind...
Interested in the Paine selection, by the time the tour starts he will have had no cricket for over 12 months. Nevill has put together a very good year or two in shield and probably deserved a shot with Aus A. I suppose their trying to get some cricket under his belt before next years domestic season.

Edit. Apologies for quoting nicko99, accident.

Does anyone know what Paine is doing now? He should be spending the winter in the UK playing some level of cricket. Also does anyone have a list of the current players up at the COE in Brisbane? I know Cummings and MMarsh are already up there...

Our pace stocks are incredibly good, so someone was always going to be unlucky.

Siddle, Hilfy, Harris, Pattinson are the core 4 for the test XI.

Then you have Starc, Cutting, Bird, Cummins, Johnson, McDermott, Copeland, Coulter-Nile etc. All of them are deserving of an A place, but you can't pick them all.

I think he's got the balance pretty much right, though I would have liked to see Khawaja over Klinger. Can't argue with the logic behind it though. Am also surprised by the lack of Beer.

The inclusion of Smith based on his IPL form is fair enough... for the ODI side only.
