Considering the likes of Lyon, Pattinson and Cowan are in the A squad, why isn't Wade (or even Haddin, if they seriously reckon he's still in our test calculations)? Surely he could benefit from playing as much cricket in those conditions as possible and getting as much cricket under his belt as possible.

And after 2014/15 we tour England again in 2015.
3 Ashes series in 3 years.

Possibly they're aiming at reclaiming the Ashes in 2014/15 or 2015.

It would be rather suprising if we won them next year.
guys there's two ashes series next year.

2013 Ashes in England
2013-4 Ashes in Aus
2015: World Cup in Aus
Okay **** I'm confused. Totally forgot about the occurance of the home World Cup, which of course would have to be played during our summer. Is there any online source? I checked cricinfo but their fixtures stop after the World Twenty20.

Reaper it sounds a bit bizarre that we'd have two Ashes series in 2015 on top of the World Cup?

Considering the likes of Lyon, Pattinson and Cowan are in the A squad, why isn't Wade (or even Haddin, if they seriously reckon he's still in our test calculations)? Surely he could benefit from playing as much cricket in those conditions as possible and getting as much cricket under his belt as possible.
Haddin has his own shit to deal with.

England and Australia are to play Ashes series back to back in 2013-14, according to Cricinfo, with the next series down under being brought forward by a year.

Not since 1974-75, when England lost a six-match away series 4-1 before falling 1-0 at home, have the two sides played 10 Tests in a row or back-to-back series against each other.

The 2015 World Cup is to be held in Australia and had the Ashes series due for 2014-15 not been moved England would have had a five-month tour of one country.

Back-to-back series could have been avoided had the 2013 Ashes in England been brought forward a year, but the London Olympics ruled out such a move. However, the following series in England is set to be in 2015.

Interested in the Paine selection, by the time the tour starts he will have had no cricket for over 12 months. Nevill has put together a very good year or two in shield and probably deserved a shot with Aus A. I suppose their trying to get some cricket under his belt before next years domestic season.

Edit. Apologies for quoting nicko99, accident.
Lol. You edit the post to apologise for quoting somebody by accident, and don't edit out the quotation. :p

Cooper's constant selection has me on edge that they'll play him for a couple of ODIs, and then never again, meaning the Netherlands can't pick him for four years.

I suspect they are testing paine and smith for their leadership qualities.

Smith was rubbish the first time, but he may have grown up.

paine is considered the bets keeper in the land, but his batting is below par.

Wade has every right to expect to be the no.1 keeper.

nevill had a rough time in his first couple of games in international duties so probably has slipped behind, wade, paine and haddin.

I'm hoping McDermotts lessons to our fast bowlers stuck in their heads before CA get some imbecile cooley clone that complicates everything up and we go back to throwing down pies.

I don't know anyone who considers Paine the best keeper. It's clearly Hartley and Nevill. Paine is generally considered to have the 'least' problems though. Keeping isn't considered a worry like Wade, batting isn't considered a worry like Hartley and Nevill, and then leadership

If Coulter-Nile is needed for the Ashes tour, we are in serious strife. At this stage he'd be behind:

Siddle
Harris
Hilfenhaus
Pattinson
Cummins
McDermott
Johnson
Starc
Faulkner
Bird

I'm not disputing that he's a talent, one that should feature in the national squad at some point in the future, but we have very deep fast bowling stocks at this stage.
i'd have coulter-nile in front of mcdermott, johnson, starc, faulkner and bird...... and if it wasn't for cummins 6-for in south africa, him too...

pattinson will carve up next season... was looking tired on the windies tour but this has easily been the most cricket he's played at first class level so his debut.... he'll be good for the run.

for mine it goes
1 - pattinson
=2 - harris, siddle ,hilfenhaus
(pattinson only just in front, but i reckon will be well in front within six months)
5 - cummins (once he gets on the park for a few months will rocket up to patto_man levels)
6 - cutting
7 - ncn
8 - bird
9 - faulkner
10 - butterworth
11 - starc
12 - mcdermott
13 - mckay
14 - johnson
15 - george

probably oversights cause i'm blind....

Look at the post before mine :)
i see

I completely forgot about Cutting - never seen him play. Just how good is he? Strengths/weaknesses?

Cutting is a right hander.

Has a nice action which gets plenty of bounce. Can be pretty sharp too. I would have played him before Starc at the Gabba last year, but now he has fallen back in the logjam of fast bowlers.

strengths:
takes wickets, a lot, left hander.

Weakness:
suspect back. Starc is preferred.
cutting is a right armer.

has a great action... his tall, and his uses every inch of his height to extract as much bounce as he can. he gets a bit of movement of the seam too, but he may struggle on pitches where no matter how hard you try you just can't consistently get the ball above the midriff... it's a bit of an unknown for him because as this stage we've not seen him have to deal with these conditions much.

conversely he has an ordinary run up with far too short strides, but it seems to work for him. his shield record is very very strong and there's nothing to suggest that he couldn't make the step up.

regarding quick bowlers if you had to take good action - poor run up v poor action - good run up, you'd go the former...

my main worry with him is that he's all pace. I mean, this season, I saw him take wickets solely through putting a fast ball on or around the stumps.....and he ain't pushing 150km/h.A few bowlers have got inflated records 'cause of seam/swing conditions but I think Cutting has an inflated just based on the poor standard of batting that can't cope with the step up in pace from juniors/grade. He's going at 3.48 runs an over in the shield which is a huge worry considering, as above, he's fast, but he ain't brett lee fast.

that said maybe he comes on quick to the bat or something. but he interests me the least of bowlers around the squad. i feel for him a bit, he might have taken some wickets had he played nz because nz are traditionally terrible against quick bowlers, but really, from qld alone I'd sooner pick harris, magoffin and mcdermott for aus. that said an aus a tour should be the best pace to test whether his style of bowling is capable of stepping up

Cutting has an action built for injury, so happy to see him remain as a shield gun until he can get more reliable.

Not sure on what planet anyone could have Coulter-Nile ahead of Bird or McDermott though.

Thanks for the feedback on Cutting guys.

That injury really came at a bad time for him because I think he's going to get pushed back down the pecking order as a few other young quicks start to explode.

Would have him behind Bird and about on par with McDermott.

I admit of course to not seeing Cutting much. However surely McDermott's ceiling is higher? He is only young and has shown he can absolutely tear teams apart. Only early days of course.
