Me and my mate are having a debate over what is the greatest Australian side we've seen. both being 21. Born in 1990.

This is my best X1.

Hayden
Ponting
S.Waugh
Symonds
M. Hussey
Gilchrist
Lee
Warne
S. Clark
Mcgrath

M. Waugh 12th man.

Steve Smith in for anybody

Depends where we're playing, S Macgill would be in for a test at Sydney for instance.

P.s. Can't believe how much it sucks that Macgill and Warnie were around at the same time, Macgill would be a 500+ wicket spinner if we had him now. Sigh :(

Assuming we're trying to a pick a test side from say the last 15 years or so, damien martyn would be unlucky to be overlooked for a middle order position in favor of symonds

Something different; the best ODI team since 1990.

From the top of my head, so probably missed someone.

1. Hayden
2. Gilchrist
3. Ponting (C)
4. M Waugh (I know he didn't bat there much in the latter half of his career, but Hayden couldn't bat anywhere else.)
5. Bevan
6. S Waugh (His all-round skills from early in his career get him a gig.) (VC)
7. Symonds
8. Gillespie (Lottery really.)
9. Warne
10. Lee
11. McGrath

(12). M Hussey

As someone of a similar age

Test

1. Hayden
2. Taylor (numbers weren't as good, but he played against the best - the Windies with Ambrose/Walsh/Marshall - and the best captain) (C)
3. Ponting
4. M. Waugh (would go to a game just to watch him bat - and they best catch I've ever seen)
5. S. Waugh
6. D. Martyn
7. Gilchrist
8. Warne
9. Gillespie
10. Kasper (particularly on the sub continent - there was no-one with more guts)
11. McGrath

Hussey, Langer, Healy, Fleming unlucky

ODI
1.Gilchrist
2. Hayden (would have loved to put Mark Waugh here, but just can't fit him in)
3. Ponting
4. M. Waugh (as above-too good to leave out)
5. S. Waugh (C)
6. Bevan
7. Symonds (may bat higher - floater depending on how the innings progresses)
8. Harvey
9. Warne
10. Lee (hate him, but he is a great ODI bowler - just a tosser)
11. McGrath

Some very unlucky to miss - Lehmann, Martyn, Hussey in particular

Deano, boonie, border, Langer > M.waugh and taylor.

Deano, boonie and border all played against the best as well, and came out with superior records.

langer in a the post taylor period as an opener was v. good.

M.waugh's test average of 40 compared to boonie, deano and border, who played in the same era, is very average.

Deano was one of the best fielders ever, boonie best short leg ever, border was v. good everywhere.

Slater ahead of Taylor AND Langer? Had the talent but....really?

Mine (from about 1996ish onwards)

Hayden
Langer
Ponting
M Waugh
S Waugh (c)
D Lehmann (rate him above Marto, plus him and Tugga on field together means I do'nt have to carry Taylor as captain and can put Langer in)
Gilchrist +
Warne
Gillespie
Fleming
McGrath

Yeh, Slater was great, set the tempo for a lot of success. Next choice would have been Boon.

The attacks faced by Boonie and Slater were far better than those faced by Langer and Hayden.

Marto- Underated! Was a gun just couldn't perform against the Poms unfortunately. To be fair i remember him copping a lot of bad luck against the poms- 2 or 3 howler decisions in the 2005 ashes series.
M Waugh
S Waugh
Gilchrist
Warne
Gillespie?
Lee
Mcgrath

12th man: M. Hussey

AB stiff never saw him play (only 18)

Difference with Hodge is that MacGill was kept out of the test team because Warnie was always there to keep him out.
Hodge had a similar problem for the early part of his career but once Martyn was on the other side of the Hill, Hodge was only kept out because of political bullshit.

The thread is called Australia all time best XI, not the best I can remember in the short period of time I've watched cricket:

So, based on my reading of the game:

Ponsford
Hayden
Bradman
Ponting
Greg Chappell
Keith Miller
Gilchrist
Lindwall
Warne
Lillee
McGrath

Lindwall can be interchanged with O'Reilly or Grimmett based on pitch conditions.

And, because others are doing it, the best I've seen would be:

Lawry
Hayden
Ponting
Greg Chappell
Border
Walters
Gilchrist
Warne
Lillee
Thomson
McGrath

How do people who watched Ian Chappell rate him? His average was goo for his era but not amazing, yet people speak highly of him - particulary his attack on the short ball and footwork against spinners.

Anyone else rate Stuart Clark as High as I do?

Could have been as good as Mcrath if played as long as he did.

Been unlucky with such good bowlers in the same era, Mcrath Clark Warne Mcgill.

i'd have AB ahead of punter, basically because AB batted against some great bowlers and when punter had his 'first' run in the test side, wasn't as well performed, but its opinion.

mmm I'd have s.Waugh ahead of dougie but your second team is damn awesome too, maybe dizzy ahead of thommo, idk, thommo was a legend and dizzy never seemed to have that personality despite being a damn awesome bowler.

I'd have loved to have been in Miller's inner circle, the tales of his adventures are pretty epic.
