My first test was 1985, so I'd go with

Mark Taylor
Matthew Hayden
Ricky Ponting
Allan Border
Mike Hussey
Steve Waugh (c)
Adam Gilchrist (wk)
Shane Warne
Jason Gillespie
Craig McDermott
Glen Mcgrath

12th man- David Boon (will also sing "Under the Southern Cross"

the bottom three won't put on many runs (unless we're facing the Bangas and Dizzy is in as night watchman), but I reckon that top 6 has a wee bit of grit and would hang around a while on almost any type of wicket.

I started following cricket in the 80s, so the best test XI I've seen would comprise the following players:

1. Hayden
2. Langer
3. Boon
4. Border (c)
5. S. Waugh (vc)
6. Ponting
7. Gilchrist (wk)
8. Warne
9. Gillespie
10. McDermott
11. McGrath

I appreciate a number of teams are being selected based on who you've seen rather than an alltime best side, but I have to say, I reckon Greg Chappell is criminally underrated by a number of people.

87 tests, 7,110 runs at 53.86 (24 centuries).

Plus another 1,400+ runs at 56 in the WSC supertests (inc 4 centuries) plus 400+ runs at 100+ (inc 2 centuries) against the 1971/72 rest of the world side (which replaced the South African test tour that summer).

He played in an era where a boundary was the fence, bats were primitive by today's standards and some of the pitches were frequently atrocious (including our very own MCG). The first half of his career was played without a helmet too.

For mine, he's a walk up start in any Australian best XI.

Great post, really doesn't get his dues. People say Punter is the 2nd best Aus bat of all time and fair enough, but you'd think there was no one else even in the debate. Could easily argue for GC as per your post.

As per earlier post Bradman, Chappell, Punter, Gilly, Warne, Lillee and Mcgrath are walk up starts.

Matthew Hayden
David Boon
Ricky Ponting
Greg Chappell
Allan Border
Steve Waugh
Adam Gilchrist
Shane Warne
Dennis Lillee
Stuart MacGill
Glenn McGrath

If 1990 onwards is criteria.

Taylor (VC)
Slater
Ponting
M.Waugh
Border (C)
S.Waugh
Gilchrist
Gillespie
Warne
MacGill
McGrath

Team picks itself really.

As for an all-time XI, contenders from that side would be Punter, S.Waugh, Border, Gilly, Warne, McGrath - which is pretty good from one era!

Can't believe people are putting Hayden in an all-time XI, must be looking up statsguru as criteria.
