A lot of clubs and leagues like to use Australia Day celebrations as a push for promotion and development.
Australia was created on January !st 1901. that's when people living in Australia became Australians.
It was to be a new country in a new century.
Considering the controversy of the present date of celebration in Australia, clubs and leagues might want to discuss alternatives.

Actually I like Jan 1 1901 as a possible alternative to the current set up. Dont worry there was a lot of haggling to bring that date about - It was not smooth sailing.

Another option (and to steer clear of the New Year's public holiday) is the 9th of May.

On that date (in 1901) was the opening of the Commonwealth Parliament, so the Australia Day focus could turn more to a discussion about our democracy?
