The USA's national day celebrates their independence from England while ours "celebrates" our dependence on England! Fair dinkum there has to be a better day to have as a national day than the setting up of a penal colony! Maybe we haven't earned one yet.

My sentiments exactly. Today's date is totally irrelevant to anyone other than New South Welshies. Jan 1st is the day to celebrate, when the Commonwealth (or Federation) was proclaimed.

Aus Day is freaking nothing as Qt said we arent a Republic.

Was at the cricket today. Talking of the flag and our continued dependence on British symbols...we must be the one country where we feel compelled to fly 60% of the flags at national sporting events as not our national flag. 60% were the green and gold southern cross and about 40% the Australian Ensign of the British empire.

Most Australian flags were worn as capes, Olympic athlete style. If the flag is big you have to hold the flag up so it doesn't drag on the ground...then from behind you look like you have just the Union Jack. Thank goodness we weren't playing the poms or the barmy army would have a go about that!!

Made me think how sadly we cling to the old, especially reading in the Australian how Kerry Jones of the Monarchists last year was quoted as saying the flag was great because it had the Union Jack as a sign of our history and the "milky way" on it so people would know where we were, in another interview when pinned down she said she thought there were "4 stars" on the flag. This is the woman who along with the PM conned the nation into voting "No" in '99.

Anyway there's footy today in Darwin and it looks close on the Port website (Port by 4 points near half time). Pity there's no TV or Radio coverage. Doesn't the NT count because its not a state?

A republic is a nation in which supreme power is held by the people or their elected representatives or by an elected or nominated president, not by a monarch.

In Australia supreme power is held by the elected representatives od the people. THAT MAKES US A REPUBLIC.

The only debatable question is which powerless person we choose as a figurehead.

IMO The Liberal government under John Howard took over a nation that was crippled by Paul Keating and his cronies. They have brought fiscal responsibility, lowest interest rates in many years ( I guess the younger readers don't remember paying 15% interest on their mortgage 12 years ago) and had the guts to overhaul a decrepit tax system (even Keating wanted a GST). Okay the tax system still has wrinkles to iron out (BAS for small business) but Rome was not built in a day.
So Don't just bag John Howard , let's hear what he's doing wrong and how you would handle it better.

It'll mean more to me when we're a republic.
