Yeah, right on.

People have a crack at guys like Sagan 'cause they apparently haven't "achieved" anything. Their achievement is raising public awareness of very complicated, esoteric science. It's not an easy thing to do.

I don't think anyone seriously regards him as the greatest astronomer of all time or anything.

Patrick Moore did similarly for astronomy in Britain, years before Sagan.

LOL, this thread has turned geeky.

Yep, apologies. Aussie Aussie Aussie, oi oi oi!

I don't object to him receiving recognition for his role, but the number of awards and stuff that have been named after him is pretty ridiculous. All I'm saying, it must have been pretty frustrating for his contemporaries.

This.

These businesses are unable to be open and be profitable because of the penalty rates.

This is very bad for the economy of the whole nation.

Anybody that can't see this is crazy.

There's more to life than the economy.

On January 26 each year it certainly is :thumbsu:

On every day of the year it is.

Agree, not much difference between triple j and the other FM stations now, rubbish music, w***er presenters and instead of ads for crappy products it's full of ads for crappy australian albums. Just another FM station.

Sagan is massively overrated due to being good at pop science. The amount of recognition he receives is really quite unfairly disproportionate to his achievements when compared to his contemporaries.

but isnt this why Galileo was so well known and popular? Because he was able to convey his scientific explanations into interesting and digestible books for the mainstream public?

Sagan put a friendly face to information and theories already published in journals like Nature, and well known among experts; Galileo shaped the thinking of his peers and fundamentally changed the way we perceive our place in the cosmos. Sagan was involved in various facets of the space program for a long time and was obviously a very cluey guy, but on a different level to "the father of modern science", as Einstein labelled him.

Obviously in that era there was much greater scope for intellectual giants to dominate the cultural landscape in a way that is not possible in today's world, where scientific learning is well down the list of most people's priorities.

Full time workers would shop more on their days off (Sunday and public hols) if they could.

This would make businesses more profitable, boost the retail sector and stimulate the economy.

This is fairly easy to grasp. At least I thought so.

We're trapped in a unionised hellhole.

I agree with your sentiments but unfortunately I think Australia is destined to operate at the current status quo for the foreseeable future.

For those advocating more restrictive trading hours I'd be interested to know your favourite holiday/living destinations. Personally I have found the places that operate with the most laissez faire attitude to trading hours are the most fun and vibrant places to live and work.

I'll be avoiding my facebook, where this is currently doing the rounds...

"Us Australian girls have fire and ice in our blood. We can handle floods and droughts, handle the cold, beat the heat, be a princess, throw a right hook and drink with the boys! We are born tough, We can cook a wicked good meal and if we have an opinion...You can bet your ass you're gonna hear it! Re-post if you're a Proud Australian ...girl"

Classy.
