Australia - US Relationship (If Trump Wins 2024)

So how does Albo or trutton do a Carney and cut ties with chump?

I sense Albo and the ALP want to rid themselves of the current US admin lunatic asylum. Not certain trutton would share the same sentiment, in fact imo he'd embrace chumps ideals, not to that radical level, none the less I digress.

Can our pm do it? What happens to Aukus and the already lost $ (wouldn't mind foregoing the so far 800 mill to rid us of Aukus to be honest). Also certain that govt. strategy think tanks are advising the govt. on alternatives.

What happens to the Anzus treaty? How does NZ get effected if we actually do a Carney and says phuq you to Chump?

At some point we ARE going to have to cut ties with the US, even if temporary, read - once chump and his circus have left the building.

The relationship is already untenable.

Do we just dump Aukus and Anzus, and whatever else has us handcuffed to the US? Cut our losses and move on? Strengthen ties with other democracies around the world (which I'm certain we're already doing).

I'd like us to and it'd overwhelmingly be popular in the electorate.

If love to as well but the most powerful weapon America has is their mass media and entertainment soft power. Movies, TV, Streaming, Music, Podcasts, News, Social Media.

With all that propaganda being shoved down our throats 24/7 it’ll be hard to culturally dis-entangle with the U.S.

Culturally the US isn't the problem, chump and his admin of dictatorship is the problem.

So how and why aren't we cutting ties like Carney has declared?

So how and why aren't we cutting ties like Carney has declared?

Carney hasn’t declared a complete cutting of ties, he’s said the old relationship is over. This may mean some diversification of the Canadian economy but at the end of the day the US will still be Canada’s biggest power.

Australians may not realise it but the majority of Canada’s population lives within 1 hour’s drive from the U.S. border. They are much closer linked to the U.S. than we are with any other country. You can’t cut those ties more than slightly.

Carney hasn’t declared a complete cutting of ties, he’s said the old relationship is over.
Semantics, the relationship is over according to Carney.

So I'll rephrase, why not end our 'relationship' with chump? >Not< the US.

The questions in context I've already posted.
This may mean some diversification of the Canadian economy but at the end of the day the US will still be Canada’s biggest power.
So what are those diversifications? I doubt anyone outside the Carney admin would know.
Australians may not realise it but the majority of Canada’s population lives within 1 hour’s drive from the U.S. border.
Any Australian with a modicum of intelligence would know this. Doesn't change the sentiment of seemingly what is the overwhelming majority of Canadians.

Albo won't, certainly not in the lead up to election. Already told China nah

Best strategy is to keep your head down and play both sides. Trust that the chaos of the US domestically causes an anti trump sentiment

Cutting aukus would be great but that would(may) put most of our other defence assets in danger; if say we get cut off from F35, blackhawk, abrams parts(not to mention munitions) then we lose most deterrence in the process. Something something, selling your soul to the devil.

US policy is still to contain China, not much has changed there, perhaps more aggressively so under Trump. Perhaps back door diplomatic chats to China suggesting we won't follow the US into whatever hair brained imperial adventure they think up next

This was the rhetoric that won him the election, not an actual policy.

They've already made concessions(mainly to satisfy Trumps ego rather than substantial ones) and will remain the biggest trading partner, security overseer etc. 10% tariff is doable, 50% is an embargo.

There's a fair chance Trump backs down on tariffs once the mayhem kicks in.

As far as the F35s, someone posted a link that the Oz is looking at or even entering into an alternative.

I'm more than certain that the ASPI is advising defence / govt. of alternatives. and the govt. is probably looking intensely at those, given the irrationality of the chump admin.

As far as Albo goes he's already given strong language in opposition to chump.

Who cares if it's not policy?

Which he shouldn't have implemented in the first place, damage is done, ship has sailed.

Oh god I hope not, their response is always double down on US arms producers and get ready for a war with China

US will remain Canada's biggest trade partner and their security guarantor
Sure Jan! No they won't, like the rest of the world, private enterprises in Canada will be diverting their trade away from the US where possible.

This is not speculation, unless of course Canadian businesses are so dumb not to. Which is highly unlikely.

You might think different, which wouldn't surprise.
It is, just because the electorate favours Trump doesn't mean it's not, it just means they're stupid and the dems are terrible.

Of course this could change, insurrection act etc. We'll see
No it isn't, the electorate doesn't favour chump, remember only 30% of the population voted for him.

You're insulting the bulk of the population of the US as being stupid, I'd say that's a stupid take.

It is speculation, but yeh sure let's see. Is the UK going to replace the largest export market in the world that exists on their border?

40% choose not to vote(or struggle to vote for various reasons), why I said it's a flawed democracy.

The working class is poor, undereducated(on purpose), and flooded with propaganda. Sure they've got some good universities for the upper classes. Being stupid isn't an insult on the american people, it's an insult to their domestic policy

No it is not speculation, Carney has made that clear.

Not sure what your border definition means.

It's not a democracy right now, it was before chump got in office.

Yes it is an insult.

At first i didn't think it would affect things at all, what i didn't count on was Albo being "scared" of Trump and not having a clue or the goolies to confront him and how to negotiate with him. We will get 3 years of silence from the newly elected lunatic asylum in Canberra and one side couldn't care less! Trump will work out a deal with Carney and Canada before he even thinks about Albo.

No, international organisations which monitor the status of democracy in each nation have now ranked the U.S. at best as a “flawed democracy” or just outright authoritarian.

It’s been happening for years. Redrawing electorates to favour Republicans, suppressing the votes of groups not likely to vote Republican, stacking courts with partisan judges, denial of valid results, bribing of politicians by lobbyists, consolidation of power, militarised police, sensationalised media, ownership of government by wealthy corporations.

This was all happening before Trump 2.0 came into being, it has just been accelerated over the last few months.

Albo hasn't shown any sign of being 'scared' of chump. Not sure how you've come to this conclusion.

the proposed sale will >

“will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States,”

nothing more needs to be said. god, we are so in their pockets it’s sickening. oh, for a mike carney.

I would prefer us getting the Meteor. Its a better missile. Australia buying from Europe instead of the USA would also send a signal re tariffs etc.
