Media cherry picking is the cause of the booing in my opinion. If they were honest and said "yeah he hasn't lived up to the potential but he's the best allrounder prospect and we're taking a gamble" people would probably get behind him more than when they say "The bloke averaging over 60 recently is a really attractive option with the ball" and berate people without acknowledging his output.
I think all the media discussing it today is either ignoring, or is being wilfully ignorant about the parochialism of Victorians. If he'd replaced Head there might've been an undercurrent of boos because people think he gets a free ride - but booking today was more about him taking the place of a Victorian than it was about him being selected IMO.

Ironic that.
Because when the Sandgropers booed Healy all test after he took over WK duties from Tim Zoehrer.
Short memories those sandies.
In his Cricket Legends interview Gilchrist described people giving it to him in the street for being the NSW blow-in who replaced the local Zoehrer.

Funnily enough for those worrying about Marsh filling his boots and getting a free ride in the Test team I think Handscomb was a much bigger chance of getting a massive score and then going back to being a liability.

Showing your bias there, the booing is because he’s a shithouse cricketer who should be nowhere near the test side.

Any wonder test cricket is struggling. 2 wickets and less than 200 runs in almost an entire day of play.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Jesus people are fickle.

1. Test cricket isn't struggling
2. We've just come off one of the most entertaining tests we've seen in years literally a week and a half ago.

Nope. Naive way of looking at it. Boos were definitely because they don’t want Mitch in the side period. Not because he replaced a Victorian.

What ****in bias? I'm not Victorian or West Australian, I don't support either in the Shield (as is clear if you look under the "other teams" I have listed.)

It's not personal, I'm just reminding people of the parochialism of Victorians being a driver of reactions. You see it here on BF as well, there are plenty of Victorians who would prefer Victoria have success over Australia.

Despite that risk I would have had Starc and Cummins share the new ball. Starc to come off of the first two overs were without danger. He can get a wicket while bowling trash, so worth a short burst. The issue is Cummins was bowled too recently and maybe can't be used again tonight.

edit: Paine nearly deflected that on for five, would have been unlucky.

The problem isn’t dropping Handscomb. It’s replacing him with someone worse.

Now Marsh will cash in and we’re stuck with the shittruck for another 5 tests or more. It’s truly sad seeing his name in the team

100%. Gotta get those 5 days of 60k+ through the gates. First 2 tests set this one up so people will definitely turn up.
I'm pretty sure I read that day 5 is just a gold coin donation entry (that I expect goes to a charity), so I'd struggle to buy into the conspiracy argument.

My point was that Handscomb probably would have secured himself another 5 tests on this road. Definitely think Handscomb should have been replaced by someone else, Wade first in line at the moment, then Burns.

I'm not Victorian, but I disagree 100%. The booing was to at least shine light on the fact publically (as opposed to only on social media) that an underperforming and undeserving player was once again brought into the side at the expense of not only a Victorian, but every in-form cricketer in the shield who are made to jump through hoops for years for maybe one opportunity.
He may have fallen off a bit, but even a guy like James Faulkner only ever played one test and took 6 wickets and made back to back 22's on foreign soil. Has Mitch ever contributed even that much with both bat and ball in the same game in his 20+ appearances?
