Hello folks.

With 45 Irish women now in the league could we have Australian rules first real international match?

I know there has been modified Gaelic and Ausssie rules in the men’s but with the number and skill of the Irish women, plus those that haven’t made the journey, could it be a worthwhile endeavour?

Well, we could. And in fact we might, as soon as next year.

Doing it against a full-strength Australian team would be very silly though, because the Irish team would never win a clearance.

That aside, an annual Indigenous All-Stars game should be first priority. Ireland as a potential opponent might make sense, supposing the best Irish players are available.

You don’t know who the Irish could draft in for an international. There’s be nothing to stop them bringing in a tall athlete from another sport.

The AFLW was built on such practices.

I have a feeling it's not going to be somebody who can compete around stoppage with players like Garner, Prespakis, Riddell, etc. Otherwise they'd already have an AFLW contract.

The AFLW was built on such practices.
It most certainly was not built on drafting players who had never played the game before.

Last night's edition of the W Debrief they were discussing the possibility of an Australia and Ireland game, and these were the theoretical teams selected by Kelli Underwood and Lauren Wood.

‘Mouth-watering’ AFLW fixture option revealed; crowd call looms for league — Talking Points

‘MOUTH-WATERING’: AUSTRALIA VS. IRELAND FIXTURE GAINS MOMENTUM

State of Origin is back for the AFL next February, but for the AFLW, they may just go one step greater than that.

The league’s recent confirmation that women’s representative football will be played in 2026 has sparked curiosity over the finer details of the fixture, such as whether or not the match would be played as state vs. state, or even Australia vs. Ireland.

Some of the AFLW’s best talents hail from the ‘Emerald Isle’, and given their prominent presence league-wide, an exhibition match between the two sides now looms as a genuine possibility.

“Can they play tomorrow? I would love that!” Herald Sun journalist Lauren Wood said on The W Debrief.

“At a Marvel Stadium, completely unhampered by wind or anything, just let these two teams so absolutely hard at it. You know what, I actually wouldn’t put it past the Irish team. These are the players that have taken this competition to the next level.

“I think we can start the campaign here ... I think this would be a huge exhibition event for the game. It would take the game global, and it would be a heck of a contest, wouldn’t it?”

“It’s mouth-watering!” Fox Footy commentator Kelli Underwood added when taking a look at the theoretical sides.

Within the current framework of the AFLW season, any fixture would likely come post-season given the number of Irish players with commitments to their Gaelic football counties back home.

When probed on a preferred time for any clash between the two countries, Hawks star Aileen Gilroy was in favour of seeing the match take place a couple of weeks after the grand final — which currently would align with around mid-December.

“It’s hard to know (when to play)... obviously if we were going to do it, we’d want to do it properly. Maybe towards the end of the season after the All-Australian, after the Grand Final,” Gilroy said. “I would definitely think at the end of the season is where you’d get best.”

Love to bring back the international series.
Aussies and Ireland.
First game to be played at the MCG.
Best of 3 games.
Play at Croak Park in Dublin.
I miss the international series.
Has to go ahead this idea now.

I think it would be much much smarter to play this in Ireland first off if they are thinking about it.

The interest over there because of the number of girls coming over has reportedly exploded.

Games are televised etc.

Would really drive home the interest in the womens game over there, Im sure they would turn out given the hiatus that has occurred between the mens version.

They would also be confident of a victory given the relative strength of the girls game.

Getting 40k-50k to Croke Park would ram home the momentum over there imo.

I'm a massive sucker for the international games. On paper we would kill them, but you just know the insanity level the Irish girls would bring would be off the charts. We'd be doing well to have all our players still alive by quarter time.
International Rules we'd kill them? Those are some mighty powerful green and gold tinted sunnies you have on. I think it'd have to be footy; the Gaelic skills and history of women's football in Ireland would suggest the Irish would destroy the Aussie girls at a hybrid game.

I reckon it'd be a fairly likely chance that in a game of footy the Aussie girls would win 7-8 times out of 10, but it would have a higher chance of being a contest.

I said international games not rules, taking both into account.
