I think you actually nailed the reason. If you’ve got control, youve got the ability to make more opportunities from the new ball.
Yes, I know when I played, I loved the new ball. Hold the seam up, aiming for top of off stump, making the batsman play. On occasion we had quicker bowlers in the team who really preferred the older ball. Different strokes for different folks.

There is still two days left, stuff declaring. Once you have a side down, grind them into the dirt. Can easily bat till lunch tomorrow, give Head a chance to make 150.
Normally I would agree. Declaring earlier doesn't always give you more time. But there is rain forecast for much of tomorrow, that has to be taken into consideration.
