How come there has been no article about the viewership being 300,000 for game 3 as opposed to the 205,000 for game 1?

Its almost like game 1 finished an hour and a half early and therefore the time the game wasn't on brought the average viewership down for the time slot.

That article was clearly written by someone who does not understand how the initial ratings aren't adjusted if a program finishes early.

For example the ratings for Game 2's post game was apparently 394,000 but you'll find that was actually the last couple of overs of the match as it ran late.

No article has been written on the increase in 95,000 viewers between games 1 and 3 because it is a tiny fraction of the decrease between the final ODI of last summer and game 1 this year and thus not as newsworthy; coupled with the other major component of the article relating to the fact that ODI cricket is now behind a paywall, a point which does not need to be repeated within a week.

It's perfectly acceptable to run with a story based on initial Oztam numbers but should have been amended later. My biggest problem with the article in hindsight is the fact it used an average over the two sessions, rather than break it up by session, a practice which has commonly been used for cricket.

In terms of un-adjusted figures, the night sessions rated 277k for game 1, 271k for game 2 and 326k for game 3. Getting more towards decent numbers. If Fox can get 400k+ for the best rating session of a days play in whatever format, they'll be very happy; but those figures still have a way to go to get there. Much better than the 200k reported though.

So yes, the specifics of the article were misleading and exaggerated the magnitude of the viewer decline, but the overall message was still correct - a massive amount of people who were watching ODI cricket last summer weren't for the first match of this summer (and subsequent matches in the series).

I don't think Fox will be too bothered with the numbers at this point. They surely knew the small amount of exclusive content they had was not going to increase subscriber numbers. The point was probably to simply not lose as many once the AFL/NRL seasons finished.

On a purely rational basis that makes little difference, but consumers are not purely rational. There is a thing as inertia. Its easier to get people to stay than to gain new people. And once dropped, not everyone would pick it up again for their preferred footy code the following year.

I would be interested to know how many people watched through Cricket Australia given it was free for this series (I imagine it's the same for the T20 coming up as well, given Kayo isn't out of Beta yet).

Ponting and Katich are decent commentators, both are pretty knowledgeable about the game and Slater might be OK away from the Ch9 environment.

Not sure about Hodge, he isn't an experienced test player but he was good value when he was mic'd up for the BBL, McGrath is a terrible commentator though.

They could do with a more senior commentator like Chappelli, even though he could waffle on about the good old days a bit too much he still brought some much needed experience and gravitas to the commentary box, he was a prickly old bugger too that could keep the younger blokes in check, he will be missed.

Haven't heard too much of his cricket commentary on radio but he was brilliant at the Winter Olympics

Tim Lane and Alison Mitchell are meant to be part of the 7 commentary team, they'll both be great for keeping things on track.

Yeah with 7 Ponting, Katich and Nannes are all pretty damn good and 3 of the better commentators in Australia.

Slater and Fleming can be good but recently they really haven't. McGrath is mostly pretty bad from what I've heard of him and Sthalekar isn't really good just yet.

As for Hodge and Gillespie, I think Gillespie should be reasonably insightful (although I have NFI how he'll handle commentary) but I expect Hodge to be a clown.

Katich, Nannes and Punter are all very good. If you pair just one of Fleming or Slater with one of the three above, in addition to Mitchell or Lane, it’s a good team.

Hodge will be crap I think, McGrath is as boring as batshit

Just hopeful they don’t put Brayshaw (love him on the footy, he’ll do well with the BBL but not sure about the tests), Flem and Slats in the box at once

Brayshaw, Alison Mitchell and Tim Lane will be doing ball by ball commentary on 7.

Exactly, Brayshaw would do ball by ball and Flem and Slats would be the experts in that trio. It’d be unbearable to listen to

Oh god, that would be a disaster waiting to happen. Like the worst excesses of Channel 9 on steroids.

Starting to think ABC radio, Macquarie Sports radio and SEN will be the big winners if the TV commentary isn't up to scratch.

Classic soul tune. They coulda used Soul Man if Smiffy hadn't been a bad boy with Sam Moore calling on Steve Cropper to "Play it Steve".
