The facts don’t lie. Warner has struggled in England. Top score of 85. Average around 30. He can’t rely on consistent bounce. The ball moves off the straight. It got the better of Doug Walters as well.

Catching up on ‘Bargain Hunt’ at the moment. It’s not all bad news.

As frustrating as it may be, losing play to rain is absolutely fine IMO.

We are one up in this series and the more play lost due to the weather, the less time England have to do what they need to do to win the series.

The more pressure that can be placed on the English - be it because of their bad play, our good play, or the weather - the better.

It was excruciating witnessing the demise of Australia last night. We were surrounded by the weather and conditions conducive to exploitation. We were off for rain and bad light which then allowed England’s Broad and Archer to rest up for another barrage. We were on for a hiding for all but an hour when Woakes and Stokes bowled horribly and conceded over 70 runs.

Warner somehow survived and contributed to a 111 partnership with Labuschagne. Somehow we were 2/136 and the decision to send us in looked shaky. The floodgates opened with his dismissal. Root’s reaction revealed the pressure he was feeling.

Head and Wade were out quickly. Head didn’t want to be there but he copped the ball of the day from Broad. Wade was unlucky when bowled by Archer. For once the bail actually came off the stump.

The tail was not going to save us this time. Paine hung around and then out LBW on review. I still don’t trust the DRS ball tracking. The others were rabbits in the headlights.

Labuschagne was the shining light of our batting line up. Perhaps the number 4 spot is protected by an aura which ensures runs. Unfortunately he was out to the worst ball of the day from Stokes. A full bunger got him LBW. I’m certain that the artificial light made it a scary ball because he didn’t see it coming at him from that height.

179 is ok if we get to bowl at England with similar conditions but you know that’s not going to happen.

Looked to me like the lights were on for most of the highlights (working til midnight then having to get up at 5 isn't conducive to watching the cricket) so I have to ask, was this the case?

If it was, and the umpires allowed play to continue, then the utter bastards deserve to get fired. The Duke ball is darker than the Kookaburra, and it is an outrageous advantage to play with one when the light isn't good. It's part of what made Archer so dangerous last test; the bloke was constantly bowling in conditions that were borderline too dark to play, with groundlights on.

But then, England have always been a bit Essendon like, 'Whatever it takes' and all that.

The lights were on all day.

There was actually a break for bad light while the lights were on which I found interesting. They took a light reading at the time for further comparison. They took further readings but stayed out there. Labuschagne clearly didn’t see the ball. Paine was unhappy when he was out there.

I don’t know why they agree to these match conditions. I mean we have a pink ball for playing under lights. And yes that duke ball is cherry coloured.

That's actually my question, really. At what point does our team managers/team officials approach the umpires, and let them know that they're endangering our players and/or creating an uneven playing field? I mean, this is the latest Ashes ever in terms of the time of the year it's being played in England, had to be to make way for the world cup. In the course of this series, we're going to see bad light and inclement weather. They - the umpires - have to have the stones to pull the players off the moment it gets unsafe, and that includes informing the opposition captain - who will be in favour of continuing if he's got his opponent on the ropes - that the artificial lights don't mean shit when it's too dark to play.

Labuschagne didn't even see that ball. His eyes went everywhere trying to see it, and that ball could've been over his waist.
