Concerning. The allegations on the Customs officials and AQIS staff are systematically involved in helping big drug syndicates get their mules through the airport without been searched, bypassing security or if they are searched by staff who simply miss the drugs.. To do what there been accused the gangs have infiltrated customs at all levels including management to be able to pull the right staff to constantly be in the right place at the right time.

We have been warned that the big drug gangs of central america and middle east crime gangs were stepping up there operations in Australia. A significant number of people in our border security forces are actively part of the crime. Most of them seem to be in Sydney but I understand they may be waiting on a suppression order to lapse to reveal something in Melbourne as well.

It begs the question though, is it just drugs that are getting in, almost certainly unregistered gang weapons are too. Are highly suspect people getting into the country too without the proper background checks or even been recorded as having entered?. Could it be feasible that terrorists could bring there weapons in unchecked through the system right into the country with the help of the very people who who we rely to stop them?

A lot of these staff are the eyes and ears for the AFP and ASIO in regards to who enters and leaves this country.

And the worst part, are these people being recruited by the crooks because the work for customs or are the actively putting there people into the roles.

Has anyone here ever tried to join Customs?

It's quite difficult to get in, but their screening must have failed this time

I recall about 10-12 years ago there was a scandal about crooked baggage handlers in Sydney Airport and it looks like nothing has changed there

Last Goverment made a song and dance about how tough it was with security, they also made a song and dance about
'illegal immigrants'. Turns out they were all mouth, except to anyone who dared point that out.

Been watching underbelly 2 the M.O is the same use good looking women to smuggle drugs and no one is the wiser, pretty sure the magistrate will wipe the smile off her face, the probability that guns etc have been smuggled is real, the minister was on 7.30 last night saying it hasn't happened, the bloke looked about 25, Australia is at the crossroads.

Anyone seen the shows 'Banged up Abroad'? A lot of them centre around smuggling items through security at airports around the world, i don't think Australia would be very different! I think it was well known around the traps that people involved in Schapelle Corby's circle were up to the same bag of tricks.

Corby is innocent!!!

Lol, sorry, even on an anonymous internet forum I couldn't keep a straight face about that.

Earlier this morning they had a story on ABC news about a drug lord and his bodybuilding mate named Mr X they shipped drugs in though the docks. This Mr x dude also had a some sort of customs license i cant remember what they called it.

That's likely to be a MSIC card, which allows people to work in a secure maritime zone after passing background checks. Unless he had a criminal record or a known acquaintances with suspicion record at the ACC or an ASIO clearance fail he's getting the card. Even an ACC known acquaintances file the ACC can be appealed as proof of a crime has not been forthcoming.

Things may have changed, but from memory, of all the containers coming in by sea, only something like 3% of them physically get searched. Australia just doesn't have the monetary resources or manpower to do more.

No countries check 100% of containers, it's not possible for the reasons you say

The onus is on the importer or their broker to "enter" the goods, that is, submit details of the shipment to Customs (i.e. description and invoice price), but the physical contents may be randomly checked to verify this or checked on the basis of a tip-off

Docks in Melbourne and Sydney have a scanner
Detects organic material and density of content
Early stages, but is limiting the illegal trade

All docks also have a weight-check system, that cargo is meant to pass before entering the country

"The Age" report on this mentioned that in 11 instances containers were scanned but the contraband inside was not spotted - the story noted that training was at fault but those doing the scanning may have been in on "the joke"

Perhaps

Realistically, to protect our boarders, they need to relocate workers on an annual basis, although, this poses other problems

I recall the stink about crooked baggage handlers at Sydney International about 10-12 years ago

They were employing people with previous drug convictions and it was all very "cosy" with any job vacancies being filled by family members and mates with minimal/no screening
