For your information, Barrie Robran has been elevated into the Legends of the Game thing! John 'Asswipe' Elliott had a whinge about it to Neil Kerley...he reckons that only VFL/AFL footballers should be in the Legends thing. Is he anti-SA or what?!

You would think with the amount of S.A players that Carlton have had he would not be so ignorant. This proves how much of a pig this man is.

I totally agree. What I don't like is this insinuation that you needed to play VFL to be considered a good enough player. Even tonight the comment was made on 10 news "Robran is considered as being the best player never to play in the VFL/AFL." Why did that need saying? It is a totally irrelevant point as in Robrans day the vast majority of good SA players did not need to leave the State, our league was good enough. SA's football heritage had nothing to do with the VFL/AFL until 1991, I wish the AFL would acknowledge this to a greater extent.

Bloody Victorian Football League have their hand in it all.Of course that arrogant loud mouthed cigarette smoking dim wit would only want Victorian players in there. The Vics forget that if it weren't for WA,QLDand SA going in to the competition then half their clubs would now be insolvent.
He and other Vics forget that they r*ped and pillaged the WA,SA and Tassie leagues for years and years. That is why the competition was so strong. That loud mouth would still like it to be cheque book football.THE VFL STILL RULES.IN VICTORIA FOR VICTORIA ,BY VICTORIANS FOR VICTORIANS.

I don't blame the Vics, we were the ones gullible enough to join them. If WA and SA had both said sod off to the VFL expansionist plans then our leagues would still be going as strong as ever. Why? Because perhaps as many as half the Vic clubs would now be dead as stated by Anchor Man.

Our league bosses then sold us down the tube,if we had stayed with the crow eaters and stood back for a while they would have been begging for us to help them out,but we went cap in hand to them and they set the conditions. We were run by a fellow called John Walker in those days and he was a tothesider{eastern stater}and didnt give a rats rectum about football in WA.Twelve months after selling us down the tube he went back east and left us in disarray.

The SANFL did say sod off - or at least, it didn't bound gleefully over to the VFL, eager as a wet dog.

First the WAFL defected, putting the SANFL on the back foot - then the wharfies sold out, breaking the SANFL's back. Don't blame the SANFL.

Though I do agree with your conclusion - if the WAFL and SANFL had stood as one, and were not sold out from within their own ranks - those leagues would be as strong as ever, and half the Vic clubs would be dead.

The problem with the WAFL is that in 1986, 7 out of 8 clubs where legally insolvent, so even though they may have wanted to withhold and stick with the SANFL,, they probably thought they didn't stand a chance financially unless they joined the expanded VFL and shared the profits.
Personally, I am for the Datsun cup style format which was held in 1977 in which all VFL, WAFL and SANFL clubs held a pre season comp against each other.
This comp could mirror the comp's held in major soccer leagues around the world with a promotion/demotion style set up with transfer fees set up instead of the legally incorrect draft system. Because of our large country where smaller clubs obviously couldn't afford to travel you could have an eastern/western type NBA system.
Either way,,,, because at the beginning of the expansion of the VFL,, there existed a NAFL (National Australian Football League),,which was the ruling body of the game up until the AFL became an entity, should be to blame cause they should of said no!
But that was fighting a loosing battle because of the 14 voting people on the NAFL board,, 11 where consisting of the then VFL, 1 from the SANFL, WAFL and TFL so it was always a downwards battle.
The bottom line is,, the 9 out of 12 at the time insolvent VFL clubs where always going to get their way no matter what.
So,,,,,,,lay the blame wherever you want.
All the best.
