Is there a reason none of the publications on Trove go beyond 1954?

Basically, due to the Free Trade Agreement with United States which came into effect on 1 Jan 2005 !
Until that time, I believe Trove would now have been able to load papers up to end of 1967 (as a 50 year rule applied prior to the FTA).

There are just a few titles which (with publisher's agreement) do extend beyond 1954, not many of them helping directly with footy research.

However, the Canberra Times is on Trove until 1995 and that has helped occasionally.

More good news from the Trove website re: the number of articles online or coming soon for The Herald
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?l-title=1190

Today the figure passed the 3 million mark !

Some more of the 1950s in preparation, and recently 1860s and 1870s began to appear on the list.

For all the wonderful news about Trove and The Herald issues being loaded on, it can be a little frustrating for research of late 1890s/early 1900s seasons to find that it is for some Saturday issues the "First Edition" or "City Edition" visible, rather than "Fourth Edition" or "Final Edition." No team lists or match reports in the early afternoon editions !

They have just copied what the SLV have on micro film. The late/final editions of The Herald do exist at News Corp. somewhere in storage, I believe.
Still, we can't grumble, Trove is doing a fantastic job despite the Federal Govt's funding cuts.

Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers 11th Edition
Available: 1st March 2018

EVERY AFL/VFL PLAYER SINCE 1897 This will be the 11th edition of the publication known as the Bible of footy. First published in 1992, it has sold over 120,000 copies in total.

I believe that somewhere in the last few days I've seen reference to the new edition being delayed until early April.
Anyone else spot that ?

I haven't actually seen that anywhere, but I've had the book ordered (from an online store) for the last ten days and been told there will be a delay before I receive it.

Edit (this was the message): Unfortunately one or more items that you recently ordered from us has been delayed due to unforeseen stock issues. We are sincerely sorry for this delay.

Your order will remain open unless you advise us that you wish to cancel it and be refunded.

Are there match reports on the Monday edition though?

No, I don't think so.
Most extensive info I have found (late 1890s/early 1900s) when the Sat night issue is not available, is to go to the next Friday issue which has an extensive page on football.

For example the Sat issue for 22 May 1897 is the early edition https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/page/26240671
so no footy reports, but the Friday issue 28 May has much general comment in it: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/page/26240697

Trove have downloaded Sport 1911-1948 Adelaide paper focussing on sport.

I know its fairly new as my grandfather gets a mention on a few pages. I use that to illustrate its new because I search on the family name a bit in family history searching. :)

As an example this article mentions Dan Moriarty but the section also has other little things to look through. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article215991454

Not sure if you know, but there's 3 schoolteachers who are doing a history podcast where each episode is a footy season in the Victorian League.
At the moment they are up to 1908 (where I was invited on to talk about Richmond's first VFL season)
They are really interesting to listen to as often they have used material that has since been debunked, so in a sense they are live fact-checking through the podcast. http://kicktokick.podbean.com/

I noticed yesterday that some more chunks of The Herald were released to full readable access, e.g. parts of 1943, '48, '49 and '54.

Have the feeling that almost all of the VFL era 1897 - 1954 must be at that readable level now.

Yes, I wish more of the "final editions" for the Saturday evening issue were available for the late 1890s and early 1900s,
but am grateful for what we can access, so can only hope a solution is found in the future for the "missing editions."

Magnificent Trove !

For those seeking records of Veterans or those who served in wars from 1939 onwards the Nominal Roll site has expanded to include Korea, Vietnam and The Gulf wars. The site is currently being tested and is in Beta but looks ok

Any major VIC/NSW/QLD papers online for Mon, 17-May-1993 ?

The Age is on Newspapers.com for that date. You can sign up for a free trial or let me know what you want and I can screenshot it.

Good news for Bears fans.
