NZ have struggled against raw pace in the past. The question is that if it fails (which it can), can we rely on Watson/Marsh. Thats the million dollar question. Cummins can be expensive but he picks up wickets. Halewood is more your solid 1/50 odd bowler, Cummins will either be 3/40 or 0/70, there isn't much else. It is a gamble. Then again we are taking the royal gamble of picking Clarke who comes in cold with no match play.
I would stick with Hazlewood. He would be stiff to be dropped on one below average game and he did have a catch dropped off his bowling. Playing Cummins who is inconsistent and could go for plenty of runs is a risk I wouldn't take against one of the best ODI teams in the world.

Oh great now we have Hazelwood bowling pies again. I'd almost replace Cummins, bring Sandhu straight in if he is going to be out for more than these two games.
I think you are a bit harsh on Hazlewood, he has a good record in his short ODI career. He didn't have a great game against England but was really good in the two warm up games prior. I'd prefer him to Cummins to be honest.

I rate Hazelwood in test cricket, his ODI stats are flawed though. He just bowls a length that says 'belt me'...and guess what good batsman have. Plus he is hopeless at the death. You are having a bloke that can only bowl in the first 30. I'd rather have picks Sandhu.

Surely they won't drop Marsh for a game in Perth.

Just what we need...Watson gets runs against the might of Afghanistan....only to fail against the decent teams. Get rid of him NOW!
Watson getting dropped. How naive. Bump this for me in 5 years time at his retirement press conference.

Only way we'll get rid of the 'charity dismissal' now.

He's used his nine lives, cashed in all his credits in the bank, used up his get out of jail free cards....

Hopefully he's just exhausted his golden ticket.

The last bit is a perfect summation 'Get rid of him NOW!'....

Just 9 lives...more like 90 lives! Fair dinkum. I mean when Watson goes out they might as well put it as 2 down, he never lasts long! His dismissal n Saturday was the end for me, going along nicely Warner smacking them everywhere...decides to try and his Vettori out of Auckland and triggers a collaps, get rid of him. If he aint bowling 10, he is useless. Marsh probably got more wickets in 1 game than Watson has in 8 months! Smith at 3, Clarke 4. Then Marsh, Maxwell, Haddin, Faulkner, Johnson, Starc, and one of Cummins/Hazelwood.

If Faulkner comes in for this game it will be Marsh. Watson definitely needs runs though.
Given it's only Afghanistan (no disrespect intended) I suppose they might give him (Faulkner) a bit longer and that gives them another match to sort out who to 'omit' out of Watson and Marsh. Personally I prefer to drop Watson and keep Marsh. Think Marsh has a bit of X factor about him and seems to thrive on the big matches.

Also Marsh is actually hitting the ball well, Watson couldn't hit the ball off the square!

Didn't say how long ago he used his nine lives :p

Smith should go out to bat with him and stand next to the square leg umpire.... Will save him time that way!
Good old under 10's cricket rules lol. Don't think I've ever seen a bloke who has averaged about 25-30 in the last 18 months hyped up so much and failing so many times and not getting dropped. He is useless!
