Australian ODI Squad - 2014/15

As long as you have a few 'batsmen' that can bowl a bit. Which is why Watson, Marsh and Smith are dead certainties, and why I get the Maxwell in our top side thing. Faulkner at 8 or 9 strengthens the batting. Then you have Johnson, Harris and Starc. All can bat.

Smith needs to bowl a bit more I reckon, he's going to get smashed a fair bit but he is a wicket taker (you may need to spend a bit to get one though).

I think the hardest part of picking the 11 is trying to fit Faulkner, Marsh & Maxwell in the side. I reckon only 2 of them can play in the same side.

Faulkner is the perfect number 8 who can adapt to any situation & hopefully his bowling can hold up which i think it will.

Picking between Marsh & Maxwell was extremely tough but we really need some variety in our attack & Maxwell bowls some decent off spin. Bit of a risk batting him at 6 but if he can get his form back (he can actually bat) would be an enormous asset to us in the world cup.

Who knows though plenty can change...

Something like this for the World Cup squad?

BAILEY, George
BOYCE, Cameron
CUMMINS, Patrick
FAULKNER, James
FINCH, Aaron
HAZLEWOOD, Josh
JOHNSON, Mitchell
MARSH, Mitch
MAXWELL, Glenn
SMITH, Steve
STARC, Mitchell
WADE, Matthew
WARNER, David
WATSON, Shane
WHITE, Cameron

No Harris or Clarke. White and Boyce the bolters, Boyce could get a run against certain nations like England. Hazlewood the depth bowler. I've probably forgotten somebody (or two).

I quite like this squad. Gives a good, strong blend of established players and stars

Well i'd argue that Faulkner is pretty even in his batting & bowling ability so don't see why we can't have him at 8. Who would you have at 8 out of interest?

a better bowler. mj, starc, harris, hazlewood, ncn, cummins, richardson, mckay etc. you do not need a batting all-rounder at 8. you do need 4 specialist bowlers
I agree. I love Faulkner's batting at the end, but he's sort of stuck at the moment. If we want him at 8, he needs to become a front line bowler. If we want to bat him in the top 6, he needs to become a front line batsman.

I think people are underestimating the need for deep batting lineups in ODI's these days. We get badly exposed from number 8 onwards without Faulkner in the team. You have to put up with the 10 extra runs he's going to leak with the ball compared to someone like Starc because Faulkner will give you a reliable 20-30+runs extra with the bat than Starc will. You've gotta play the percentages.
On this, Faulkner has been listed to bat eight 24 times. 5 times he didnt bat (but presumably bowled a lot) so he's actually batted at 8 19 times, and has faced more than 15 deliveries on 10 occasions: so when he's listed at 8, the percentages says he's not doing much most of the time.

(and this is just basically a follow up point on the ones I made about wicket-keepers at 7 the other day. http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/australian-odi-squad-2014.1051846/page-31#post-36038032)

Fair enough i guess i've taken a bit more risk in my team but i still think Faulkner & Maxwell can get through 20 overs. Watson & Smith as backups.

Did we even play 4 specialist bowlers this series against SA? I'm thinking they want an all-rounder at 8. Our batting will be our strength.

I think of the three, Marsh is the least droppable, and choosing between the other two at 8 depends on whether we play a specialist spinner or a third seamer. Quite happy only playing the three specialist bowlers and getting the other 20 from marsh, faulkner/maxy, and watto/smith/finch/pup.

You start to rely on 20 between part timers you will lose more than you win. You need 4 front liners. Faulkner and Marsh can be relied for quite a few overs but I wouldn't want 20 between them. Smith's pies don't count. Might as well call AB De Villers a bowler if we are going to count him! Pup after a hammy is not bowling and Finch...well there is one bloke who rates Finch's bowling...it is Finch himself!

I can see it happening though. Maxy may wind up as our frontline spin bowler.

"Australia will take on world champions India in one of their final two warm-up games before February's one-day cricket World Cup.
Michael Clarke's men will follow the Indian showdown with a final warm-up against the United Arab Emirates, the ICC announced late on Monday night."

Suppose it's all about fine tuning but would have liked a stronger team than UAE. I understand that they need to be playing harder teams in the warm ups for their prep, but we need to be worked hard to prepare us.we should have a great chance the WC, just hope the crowds get behind the Aussies.

Are we going to go with two keepers?

We do have a whole tri-series against England and India to prepare.
