Not normally one to pay much attention to this award but Quantum Physicist Professor Michelle Yvonne Simmons sounds an extraordinary person.

Since arriving in Australia from Britain in 1999, Professor Simmons' work at the University of NSW quantum physics department has helped develop leading technology on a global scale.

Five years ago, Professor Simmons and her team developed the world's first transistor made from a single atom, as well as the world's thinnest wire.

Now she is looking to build a quantum computer capable of solving problems in minutes, which would otherwise take thousands of years.

Science trumps sports this year - and so it should for these type of awards where you get a platform for 12 months to do some good - with senior Oz of the year biophysicist and food security exper Dr Graham Farquar and maths teacher extraordinare Eddie Woo winning the local hero award.

Sam Kerr did get Young Australian of the year which is where a sports person does get to make a decent impact and she did that indeed. Being considered the best in the world in your field of endeavour is worth a nomination as a minimum.
