Always has been. Biggest gronk brigade in the sporting landscape. If it’s not Serbians and Croatians throwing flares at each other, it’s the fanatics or worse still - the people who cheer when a ball boy makes a simple catch on the full.

When did this happen?

Not sure that Gary Rohan is a better footy player than Steve Johnson but he is better than him at tennis.

As a solid get to a 3rd to 4th round sure but let’s be real he has very little weapons. Nick has weapons but he’s flat out lazy and doesn’t want to work hard. Players would kill for his talent and it’s a joke he’s not well and truely in the top 10-15. He’s lazy always has been

Agree, but obviously Curious Nick is resigned to and comfortable with just being an 'entertainer'. The tennis media gave up years ago with related criticism and actually now encourage it.

He rarely defends his losses anymore with 'tennis related' talk in post match interviews - if people really need further related evidence...

Medvedev calling Tsitsipas a ‘small kid who can’t fight’ at a US minor a couple of years back is still one of the funnier recent moments in Tennis.

Hope he goes on to win the tournament.

Murray just can't back up after a hard match which has been his story for the last 12 months - You usually get one unheralded Aussie winning two rounds at the OZ Open. The 200K O'Connell has earned has set him up for a good run in 2022 - One of the pleasures of living overseas is receiving a different coverage of major sporting events, so avoiding the overly Aussie focus.

Imagine being upset at noise in a sporting event, not even during play but in between serves 😂 shows how precious tennis players are doesn’t it

etiquette is a matter of context… you wouldn’t eat with your fingers at a three-hatted restaurant

just makes Australians look like low-class morons to the rest of the world, massive cringe

When did this happen?
“The trouble occurred during today’s opening match on court six between a Croatian and Czech player. It followed on from an earlier incident outside Melbourne Park when a group of Croatian supporters lit flares and threatened other spectators on their way to the Australian Open.”

“The tournament has been marred on a number of occasions in recent years when ethnic tensions between Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian fans has erupted into violent confrontations.

On the opening day of the 2007 tournament Serbian and Croatian fans, draped in their national colours, attacked each other with flagpoles, bottles and boots.

Last year a brawl broke out in the Garden Square area of Melbourne Park involving Serbian and Bosnian supporters who hurled plastic chairs at each other.”

This Stuff hasn’t happened for a while, granted. But it seemed to be quite frequent in the late 2000s, early 2010s

Personally I thought the crowd was fine during the match (1. I also can’t stand the siuuuuu chant but Im so off the pace with modern culture that you just have to shrug 2. Tennis players are way too precious about crowd noise between points etc. get over it).

The post match stuff was garbage from the crowd though. No defense for that.

They cant afford tickets in the second week.
When the average age of a kygrios fan is 17 why would any true tennis purist bother showing up. Hence the boos.

As Nick put it rightly, its a ******* zoo watching a circus. Thats all Nick is now. He gets by on his serve. He doesnt have the stamina (because he doesnt train) to go the distance with the best and he doesnt have the guidance of a coach to hone his craft or keep him focused because he doesnt care about anything other than the money and coaches cost money and would be an authority figure he doesnt want.

The sooner he disappears from the tour the better.

Also coaches make you work hard and train lots. Not sure he wants to do that.

Well done to Medvedev. Nick is Nick.

I agree the Siuuu is definitely cringe as fu** but he was getting booed in the interview because he was being a sooky w***er

A bit of context helps. He's not simply commenting about noise, but about crowd interference during and between serves.

How hard is it to shut up while the player is beginning the point? Obviously difficult and Medvedev was apparently correct in his assessment that these fools have low IQ. Loved how he threw it back at them, and then ****ed with them more when asked them to respect Jim Courier, knowing full-well they were taking their displeasure out at him, and then signing the camera. Legend! He's got his own style and attitude, and it's not to simply have everyone fawn at him.

Daniil has history of feeding off a hostile crowd, most famously at Flushing. The crowd plays right into his hands.

It's not just tennis. You have to keep quiet at the golf when the players are taking their shots too.

There is a difference between a sport where you are stationary at some point in time and need to concentrate and ones where there is constant activity and you are basically just reacting (footy, soccer etc.).

Many a great player hasn't been able to cope with crowd noise during their backswing.

He spends most of the times talking about being an entertainer than tennis player.

What happens when Nick doesn't get scheduled on the main courts anymore because there are plenty of young players who keep improving.

He can't just rely on wildcards to gain entry into tournaments

Hey be fair Murray was living off the wildcards the last year lol

He'll get wildcards for as long as he plays mate.

Wildcards are given out for a number of reasons, being able to draw a crowd because you are entertainment value is a big consideration.

It was a pretty funny moment that's for sure.

I wasn't a massive fan of Medvedev anyway before last night but thought he could have handled the interview better. You had the crowd against you? Playing in Australia? Against an Australian? I'm shocked. You had no complaints during the match because you wanted to keep a stoic face on and appear like the crowds and Kyrgios's antics weren't bothering you. Well apparently they were and you cried about it after the fact.

There is a way to handle it, you can acknowledge the difficult atmosphere without being a d1ckhead. Just my opinion of course, plenty liked it and found the crowd embarrassing but in the end Medvedev won and still carried on. What would he have done if he lost?

Ultimately he wins and sticks it up the crowd, let that and a little post match celebration do all the gloating, carry yourself in the media with a touch more class.
