You think day 4 was hot? It's got nothing on day 5 with an expected top of 42 degrees and it is going to be hot from the start of play. Cool change should come through around 5pm tomorrow so night session won't be affected.

Schedule: https://ausopen.com/schedules/C5

Matches of interest:
Tsonga VS kyrgios - Jo willy is a long time fave for many of us and we'd love to see him win a slam. Probably won't happen though. They played once before and it was a really tough 3 set battle. Looking forward to it.

Nadal VS dzumhur - this is going to be a match with many long rallies and can see the Bosnian winning a set. Will be good to watch this one.

Seeds out

(3) Garbine Muguruza - Lost to Hsieh - 6,050 - Defending 430 - Loses 360 - 5,690
(7) David Goffin - Lost to Benneteau - 3,775 - Defending 360 - Loses 315 - 3,460
(9) Stan Wawrinka - Lost to Sandgren - 3,060 - Defending 720 - Loses 675 - 2,385
(9) Johanna Konta - Lost to Pera - 3,185 - Defending 430 - Loses 360 - 2,825
(13) Sam Querrey - Lost to Fucsovics - 2,535 - Defending 90 - Loses 45 - 2,490
(14) Anastasija Sevastova - Lost to Sharapova - 2,600 - Defending 130 - Loses 60 - 2,540
(19) Elena Vesnina - Lost to Osaka - 2,220 - Defending 130 - Loses 60 - 2,160
(23) Daria Gavrilova - Lost to Mertens - 1,990 - Defending 240 - Loses 170 - 1,820
(28) Mirjana Lucic-Baroni - Lost to Sasnovich - 1,618 - Defending 780 - Loses 710 - 908

A mouth-watering day of matches, exactly what you want from a R3. Hope extreme heat doesn't impinge too much on the quality, or retire/postpone.

Dimitrov-Rublev and Kyrgios-Tsonga are unmissable, but every singles match men and women has strong potential. Nadal might be the easiest prediction even if Dzumhur is decent opposition, but Nadal matches at AO these days always prove to be a treat regardless.

I wonder if they will end up closing the roof today. It's so uncomfortable for everyone (players, staff and spectators) while at the tennis in the heat!

It’s horrific feel for the players having to play on the outside courts! Yikes!

They were saying something yesterday that if there is play on the outside courts, they can't close the roof because they have to keep conditions the same for everyone playing?

Correct. Once the wet bulb reading (mix between air temperature and humidity) hits 32.5 degrees then the roof will be closed and ply suspended on outside courts.

They need to lower the wet bulb temp. I seriously don't get the argument that they will lose money today if they suspend play till it cools down.

No one in their sane mind wants to play tennis or watch tennis when it is 40C. You gain more money by suspending play till the night and closing the roofs, hence enticing people to purchase RLA or MCA tickets and after 5 ground passes.

If it reaches 60C on the court or something like that, then suspended it. They should also allow players breaks between sets. Heres hoping no one goes to hospital before the changes.

Monfils is still soft as butter though.

Good points!

Strangely though, that aren't doing after 5pm ground pass tickets this year

No such thing as an after 5 ground pass anymore

We have 3 stadiums with roofs. What the point if we never use them.

Watching these poor girls suffer in this heat in a 3rd set is not nice viewing. This is not a tennis match, it is who survives longest.

Watching tennis at night when it is 25-30C is great.i would be happy to pay $30 bucks to watch 1 and a half match at 8 o clock at night.

also, poor effort by the Aus Open to not offer an after 5 pm pass. would love to know the reason for it.

One reason. Money. The after 5pm ground pass was about $20 cheaper. AO organisers believe they'll still come after work and pay the full price ground pass ticket amount.

Exactly this. Obviously it was a great success with the schedule regularly running overtime and people liking the idea of watching in the evenings when it's a bit cooler and more shade so they realised they could make more money out of these people by charging them full whack!

Svitolina should dick this. Poor kid is only 15 and playing out there in 42 degree heat
