Tsonga was amazing on serve tonight. I had a shower at the start of the second set and I came back and he's almost wrapped it up, then I hear Courier saying that Youzhny had only won something like six or seven points for the set (and it was 5-0 at the time).

Henin played very well but Sharapova was out of this world. Everything she did came off, she hit with such power and angle. I've never seen her play better, or anyone for this matter. This wasn't Maria destroying some unranked opponent, this was her beating up the world # who was on a 30+ winning streak. Maria will win it all if she plays anywhere near that level in her next two matches. She should comprehensively beat Jankovic who doesn't have the weapons to beat Maria, but she does move well around the court.

As for the mens match, Youzhny was close to taking the match. That might sound silly but I firmly believe if he managed to get out of that 3rd set tiebreak he would've won the match. Tsonga happened to play a terrific tiebreak and didn't faulter other than the one serve and volley on his second serve. Youzhny was lifting his play as the match wore on and Tsonga was feeling the heat. I think this is a great result for Nadal as there's no way Tsonga is keeping up this form and Nadal will get every one of his flashy shots back and eventually frustrate him. When that happens, expect his head to drop, just like Monfils.

Sharapova and Nadal would be the favourites now. I'm hoping Ana replaces Maria though.

The Monfils comparison is harsh. Rasheed's 5 attributes he mentioned for Big Jo were pretty good i thought. And as for him not being able to perform like that in his next match, well we all thought that last year about Gonzo and he just destroyed everyone.

It shows massive flaws in the system.

What was a flaw was the possibility that if Federer lost before the 4th round he could have lost his #1 ranking to Nadal. That's just ridiculous.

I reckon ATP rankings should be over a 2 year period rather than 1 year.

It shows massive flaws in the system. I tell you what you would not see a Wimbledon draw as lopsided as this Australian Open (both men and womens). It has been a disgrace. This is exactly why the AO and the US and French need to move towards a flexible seeding system. You would not have had Serena lower than 5 in the Wimbledon seeding system, and Sharapova would have been higher as well. It needs changing becuase whoever wins in that quarter will just be cannon fodder for Ivanovic/Venus and it is not what you want in a Grand Slam Semi!
Most people say the problem with women's tennis is that it's usually 1 v 3 and 2 v 4 in the grand slam semis, we get 5 v 3 and 4/8 v 9/29 and you're complaining? If you want to see the best 8 players in the world playing each other that happens in November.

Unfortunately the bottom halves of both draws this year happen to feature all the GS underperformers and rising stars who haven't proven themselves yet, but you can't do seedings on the basis of past of lack of GS experience. Anyway 6 of the top 8 made the semis of one of the hardcourt slams last year, Jankovic did it in the 2006 US, only Ivanovic hasn't made the last 4 before

I agree that if Mikhail had won the breaker it would have been interesting, but I think you're drawing a pretty long bow on Tsonga and not giving him enough credit. He won't beat Nadal as Rafa is the world's best at getting everything back, but there was nothing just 'flashy' about Tsonga's performance. His serving was immaculate, he was hitting the corners with power on both wings, he made mince of Youzhny's second serve and his ability to construct points, including coming in at the right times to finish points off, was impeccable. He played close to a perfect tennis match, and it showed when Youzhny was going from one side to the other and was still unable to beat Tsonga on groundstrokes that would beat anyone else - when he did get a free point, he couldn't put the overhead away as he was more concerned with where Tsonga was than his own shot.

As I said, I don't think he can beat Nadal, but if he plays like he did last night from the start it will be a great spectacle. This kid is a genuine top five talent and hopefully his injury problems are behind him. He has a lot more to his game than Monfils.

Then again I remember the tanty you threw when Hewitt lost last year so it wouldn't surprise me if you just don't like Tsonga.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is a gun, I reckon he can take it up to Rafa but it will be interesting:thumbsu:

Wimbledon seem to do it fine and they get the perfect balance as well. IMO no way should a grand slam be straight off the rankings, they should be discretionary.

Yep. That would've been totally ridiculous. Can't have someone who's dominated for as long as he has number 2 in the world just because of one bad tournament.

You know how many problems that would cause? Don't rank the Williams sisters 1 and 2 it's racist etc etc.

Im not a fan of Tsonga , but either am i a rafa fan, so ill be an independant observer in that match.
