Hard to make a call on Paine's batting - 192 runs @ 48 is fantastic but he hasn't been required to really play a longer innings. Can't fault what he's produced given the actual series we've played, though. And he always looks good, but then again he always has looked good at the crease. Pretty clear he's got the job for the foreseeable future so we might see what he produces in less favourable circumstances before long.
Keepingwise the main, probably only issue, is sorting out who is going to go for those ones that are heading in the general direction of first slip but are still arguably the keeper's catches. That is probably something that gets sorted over time, and of course it would help if we had the same person consistently at first slip. It also helps if everyone is clear on where first slip should actually stand because the catch no one went for in Melbourne was headed directly to where first slip would usually stand, but Smith had the nominal first slip standing at 1.5 slip.
On the whole I'd rate him a huge success and even though I've been a supporter of his over the years I was a little surprised by his initial selection but now thrilled to see him fulfilling all that promise from a decade ago. Brilliant call from the selectors.
Bancroft has ultimately not been a success but was clearly the right call to pick him. Can't fault selectors on that.
As to Cummins, the only reason it's even a topic of conversation is that some people are simply clueless. They are the same people who *still* don't rate Starc and Warner despite overwhelming evidence that they are top class players. Clearly Cummins deserves his spot and if he stays fit will be a gun for a long time to come and better than handy with the bat as well. He bats like someone in the top 6 as opposed to Starc who has talent with the bat but still bats like a talented tailender - which is what he is so I have no issue with that.
