I can't remember a time when our national teams were this collectively crap.
Sure, we've just qualified for the World Group in Davis Cup after a lengthy hiatus, but even that is papering over the cracks.

What has happened?

I think we all took that mid 2000s cricket team for granted.

For a country with less than 25million people to pick from I think we're doing okay.

Soccer and cricket we are just rebuilding after our greatest-ever generations.

Rugby we are not really that bad, we just have a few coachable issues to sort out and a couple of players need to mature into international quality. Doesn't help that we are playing against one of the greatest-ever rugby sides across the ditch.

Tennis is in terminal decline in Australia. A sport where only the 50 best players in the world make a decent living has a lot of trouble attracting the most talented athletes. If Lleyton Hewitt was taller, he probably would have played AFL.

Lol I only just saw Socceroos got demolished by France hahahahahahaha

We have some decent golfers, and I think our Netball team just won something. It's not all bad.

But who cares about athletics when we can claim Thor and Perseus as our own. :thumbsu:

we were guns in the mid to late 90's and early 2000's pretty much entirely due to olympics funding for the sydney games.

it's the same reason Britain is killing everything now. They poured a shitload of money into sport and got the benefits.

China likewise has had a massive rising to before and around the beijing games.

It's all about $$$ and how much a country is willing to put into it, and the olympics usually provides a great motivation.

I hear that we are dominating said sports on PS3 though, so our legacy still lives. Kids don't play enough sport nowadays. Most cases it's the parents that are too lazy to sacrifice two weeknights for training and a day on the weekend for competition. It is easier for them to say, hey kid go and play on your playstation inside the safety of our comfy abode, than to say go to the park with your mates near the dodgy drug dealers house and have a kick/hit/hoop.

Our Women's Cricket team go alright. :thumbsu:

This is a really good point
netball we are good
and golf(?) not sure

but we are very much on decline in olympic events and the sports listed in the OP. We normally are leaders in at least one of rugby/cricket/swimming and it is stark that we are not

We won't be good at football for a long time.

The spine of the team is far too old. Schwarzer (GK is 40), Neill (CB, 34ish), Bresciano (AM/CM 34ish). Coupled with the fact we just aren't that good, dark times for Australian Football.

The introduction of the AIS after an awful showing at the Montreal Olympics was the catalyst for the new golden age of Australian sport. I think we were one of the first countries to put that amount of government funding into sport, and now the rest of the world is doing the same.

Plus we're a nation of fat ****s.

Netball is small sport on the world stage and we struggle to beat New Zealand, who are basically another Tasmania.

Once upon a time we made top 5 of the summer Olympics for over a decade, our cricket team dominated, Socceroos got umpired out of WC final 8, had blokes winning grand slams, made rugby WC finals, a Casey Stoner, winning speedway and motocross world championships, champion snowboarders, equal best swim team, unbeatable hockey teams, champion triathletes, dominant surfers etc etc..

From a country a handfull of international cities have as much population..

What we do have now is the worlds best form of Tintop motor racing, on display in all it's glory in a few minutes...

Hear from where ? We are crap at e-sports (Computer games) when faced with international competition (The main difference being you can be a professional gamer in Asia/America/Europe but all amateurs here unless you travel).

I think we are still doing well in womens sports generally. So hey, if the next gen of Aussies are couch potato guys with hot exercise focused women then surely that's a good thing (well for those guys anyway)

Lucky nobody cares.
