Test Australian squad for The Subcontinent

i think the top 6 pick themselves.

Do they though?

What credentials do Harris/Head/Green have against spin? Are they known for their feet movement and quick hands? (They may be - i haven't seen them enough)

Would Inglis be better suited as gloveman and batter on more challenging pitches?

We could nominate a side with Cummins/Green being the frontline bowlers and 3 spinners - and no one would care that we have just dropped the 8th bets bowler in the world. (Hazlewood)

But drop a top 10 batsman - and whoa - anarchy.

Maybe you play Hazlewood and pick Agar as your allrounder?

I'm realistic he's the only option. It comes back from wasting the entire summer with Harris who was never ever good enough. Renshaw would be in the squad.

We all know your dis like of Harris.would not surprise me if he is in the squad.Need specialist opening batsman and we agree that the future is Hunt or Street but not the time to experiment on these tours.A vital round of shield games coming which could decide the squad.

We could have literally had 5 tests into one of those openers. I wouldn’t pick Harris at all he’s not test standard.

Well to have experience is to gain experience.

Harris & Green haven't played test cricket on the sub continent before.

Head & Labuschagne both played their first 2 tests of their careers in the UAE, immediately after sandpapergate and can hardly be judged on that.

Surely they go on tour ahead of others. It's not as if we have lost our last few tests and need drastic changes.

For me Harris goes as a back up batsman at best in any case.

Easy

Khawaja
Warner
Lab
Smith
Head
Green
Carey (I would rather Inglis but they won’t)
Cummins
Lyon
Swepson
Kudelmann or Tanveer Sangha (last one is tricky but I know I want a genuine spinner not some sort of spinner)

It has to be a raging Turner though to go 3 spinners, and I wouldn’t be against playing another seamer
Easy - well, apart from the tricky bit. So not so easy really.

The tricky bit is where the conjecture lies. Most people I imagine would have the same top 10 picked in their line up, I’d personally be happy to see anyone of Agar, Kuhnemann, Maxwell or Maddinson used for the tricky part. A lot will depend on how the bowlers perform in the earlier tours to Pakistan and Sri Lanka. If Swepson has a great start to his test career I’d be happy to pick a part timer to fill in a few overs and strengthen the batting with Maddinson or Maxwell at 7. If Swepson can’t be depended upon to hold down one end for extended periods then bring in Agar or Kuhnemann.

You pick GENUINE bowlers. Part timers are really exactly that. Handy sure but really if you want a third spinner pick a genuine one.

We have 4 GENIUNE bowlers in the side with Green in there if we were to play an extra bat. That’s exactly the number of GENUINE bowlers test teams generally have

Green is there to bat. His bowling is a bonus. Picking blokes like Agar on their bowling won’t work never has and never will

A better spinner works even better end of story
And a long tail is going to be an issue if no one can hold a bat. Kuhnemann ain’t much better than Agar as a bowler. Lyon will be parked at one end all innings we can afford to look after the batting a bit more on those types of wickets

If you are relying on blokes 9-11 you are losing. Batsmen get runs bowlers get wickets

Yeah you can't exactly judge how well the Australian players will go against spin in the sub continent based upon facing Dutchy Holland on Karen Rolton oval in the shield....

I heard a stat during the Ashes which was something along the lines of the English batsman facing 140km/h deliveries over 30% of the time in Australia compared to less than 1% in county. Sub continent is going to be equally foreign to us save for like Warner and Smith.

Weve been relying on our tail to make runs for the last decade. You don’t need to pick bowlers who’ll hardly get used.

Well it’s better than picking Agar who is very ordinary at both or picking Maddinson for his supposed “bowling”. No issue picking Maddinson as a top 6 bat.

It really isn’t. You have to pick a team to suit the conditions. What’s the point of going in with 4 bowlers plus Green if you’ve got Lyon bowling from one end all day? 2 spinners plus Cummins, Green and a part timer is enough to work with

Lyon will need a break and a third spinner or a seamer is the right play. It would be different if we had a Jadeja type domestically but we don’t. Unlike Agar, Jadeja is actually test standard

Joe Root has a better bowling average than Jimmy Anderson in India but you wouldn’t consider Root test standard.

I’d consider Root a MUCH better bowler than Agar or Maddinson. He’s played as the sole spinner this summer.

FMD you change your tune quickly on here. All series you were telling us how much of a pie chucker he is!

Root averages 50+ as a bower overseas in every country apart from the dustbowls found in India and Sri Lanka, where his bowling average is in the low 20’s. His part timers come in pretty handy in those parts of the subcontinent. If you don’t think our part timers could come in handy over there I don’t know what you’ve been watching. The test pitches they produce aren’t the same as ours you know

Yet he’s still a mile better than picking Agar..what does that tell you. Just no. Not test standard.
