Test Australian squad for The Subcontinent

Ashton Agar may not be test standard and is unlikely to ever get there but there is just no planet where Joe Root is a better bowler.

But even on the most raging of turners, if we got an injury to Lyon or Swepson I'm not picking Agar (or whoever we consider our third best spinner) over Starc, Hazlewood, Boland or Richardson.

If that was to occur I'd just be going with the standard bowling attack.

If we have an injured Nathan Lyon we’re in trouble but you’d still pick 2 spinners. Absolutely no point in having 3 pace bowlers plus Green on a deck that Is doctored to aid spin bowling.

Have reservations about Green,s value as a bowler on Indian wickets, lets hope he proves me wrong.
If he’s up to bowling 5/6 overs a session at a pinch his value is enormous. Basically means we can pick an extra player who specialises in any department we fancy.

Bit harsh on Agar luke

Only played 4 tests 2 in england and 2 in the subcontinent ....bit early to say he isn't test standard ..I expect his name will be in the mix come the sub continent tours

Not harsh at all sorry to be blunt but like a few he’s a limited overs spinner and a very good one

A stupid comment, limited over cricketers if they are given a chance can still play test cricket.Agar has only played 4 tests.Warner started as a limited over cricketer. The biggest problem at the moment with your pet hates Maxwell,M.Marsh ,Agar etc is they are not getting any red ball cricket for us to judge them on because of Australian white ball cricket. You are judging the names I mentioned on white ball cricket because there is no red cricket to judge them on.

Marsh lol we had 30 useless tests to know how terrible the bloke was. It’s a travesty he’s even near a test squad. Maxwell I’ll give you albeit your know my feelings there…hey I’ll give you something he can’t be any worse than Harris!

Wouldn't surprise me if Agar gets picked for a test in India and picks up a 5 for bowling stump to stump on a raging turner

For australian conditions I would go swepson due to the bounce for India we need accurate spin bowlers who bowl stump to stump and use the natural variation of the pitch

So for me Agar is in the mix

Have you ever thought M.Marsh might have improved his game since he last played test cricket but has not had the chance to prove it because of no red ball cricket. The Aust.selectors must have similar feelings as he has been around the test group for the last few tests because of the worries of injuries or covid.Harris will go to Pakistan unless he fails badly in the next shield game I would think.

The selectors also thought Harris was “decent” just no Marsh is a slog cricketer and a gun at it

Kudelmann is better if that’s the type you want.

If you play this T20 crap you have to be a slog cricketer, similar with Maxwell if he comes in with 10 overs to go you have to take the risks.Just not real cricket as far as I am concerned. And bowlers bowling full tosses trying to buy themselves a wicket,is a joke.

Maxwell I have more time for he’s at least shown something at test level unlike Harris at least. However personally that time hasn’t past and I doubt they’d bother. Happy for him to even captain our t20 side

Think Maxwell would make a very good captain of any type of cricket side listening to his comments when miked up.Puts a lot of thought into the players he is playing against and seems a very popular with his fellow team mates. After cricket a career in the commentary box perhaps.

Been saying he should have been our t20 captain for a while. We are all thankful for what Finch has done but lets be real his batting hasn't been great for a while. Could we open with Phillipe, McDermott or whoever really.

I would open with Maxwell in a T20 game, bat 1 day type stuff the 1st few overs then the last 10 play the big shots.Would have Mc Dermott open with him BUT really give him a rest from this type of game short term and lets see how he goes in red ball cricket again in the shield.

Any of those options is more than fine. Think we have to work out who we want as our keeper because it probably influences who we open with.

Those blokes choose to chase money in the IPL rather than play sheffield shield and find red ball form, they don't deserve to get picked if they're not putting their hand up.
(Only Maxwell has my sympathy because Cricket Australia screwed him by saying they would take him to the UAE a few years ago and didn't)

We have picked Mitch Marsh for Test squads based on white ball form time and time again and it's always a disaster. He simply needs to play in the shield and get red ball form or he cannot be considered for selection.

IPL is not played during the shield season.Maxwell did give up a season for county cricket and did well but then some indifferent performances in the World Cup cost him a spot in the Australia v Australia A game before the ashes over there.Surely he should have played in that game.

Yes, Maxwell has been screwed by Cricket Australia so I have some sympathy for him.
Literally this year, some of them didn't play shield because they were still coming over from the IPL or recovering from IPL duties. (Obviously some wouldn't get picked anyway)

I apologise, you are right.Because of covid the IPL season finished 9 Oct with the finals finishing 16 Oct and then the T20 World Cup.Shield started early October but usually the IPL and shield season do not clash.Maxwell did not even make the BBC team of the tournament do you mind, expectations by some a little to high perhaps.

Would like to see the stats to see how leggies compare with offies in India.

Kuldeep Yadav who I really rate hardly gets a go in India's side - instead the likes of their offies Ashwin, Axar, Jadeja etc have amazing records over there. We just saw Ajaz Patel take a 10fa for NZ. Joe Root has 5/8 there.

Are we positive Swepson is the right choice ahead of a left arm offie to partner Lyon who bowls stump to stump and relies on the pitches natural variation?
