The ASBK has been largely irrelevant for the best part of 15 years, particularly due to off track turmoil with infighting between promotors and Motorcycling Australia.
Last year finally showed the beginnings of a resurgence from obscurity and this year looks even better, promising a return to something resembling the glory days of the 90s.
There are a good half a dozen genuine championship contenders in Troy Herfoss, Wayne Maxwell, Daniel Falzon, Glenn Allerton, Bryan Staring and reigning champ Josh Waters representing Honda, Yamaha, BMW, Kawasaki and Suzuki. Then there's the legendary Troy Bayliss making a final comeback on a Ducati after a decade in retirement who has shown top 5 race pace to start the season.
The first round at Phillip Island was incredibly tight, the top three leaving separated by a single point.
Backing up the big boys is the next wave of talent coming through, the future champs of the sport. Largely a bunch of fast and fearless teen-agers, the likes of Corey Turner, Mark Chiodo, Aaron Morris, Callum Spriggs, Alex Phyllis, Kyle Buckley and reigning supersport champ, Ted Collins will challenging for top tens with top five finishes a strong possibility by the end of the season as they gain more experience.
The series has live coverage on SBS.
