The ASBK has been largely irrelevant for the best part of 15 years, particularly due to off track turmoil with infighting between promotors and Motorcycling Australia.

Last year finally showed the beginnings of a resurgence from obscurity and this year looks even better, promising a return to something resembling the glory days of the 90s.

There are a good half a dozen genuine championship contenders in Troy Herfoss, Wayne Maxwell, Daniel Falzon, Glenn Allerton, Bryan Staring and reigning champ Josh Waters representing Honda, Yamaha, BMW, Kawasaki and Suzuki. Then there's the legendary Troy Bayliss making a final comeback on a Ducati after a decade in retirement who has shown top 5 race pace to start the season.

The first round at Phillip Island was incredibly tight, the top three leaving separated by a single point.

Backing up the big boys is the next wave of talent coming through, the future champs of the sport. Largely a bunch of fast and fearless teen-agers, the likes of Corey Turner, Mark Chiodo, Aaron Morris, Callum Spriggs, Alex Phyllis, Kyle Buckley and reigning supersport champ, Ted Collins will challenging for top tens with top five finishes a strong possibility by the end of the season as they gain more experience.

The series has live coverage on SBS.

I'm just in disbelief that there's an Australian motorsport legend doing something off the track that is for the overall good of motorsport in Australia. As opposed to corrupting it for their own benefit.

Admittedly, I was happier when Bayliss was running young blokes on the bike instead but he brings useful PR to the series.

Also, Mat Mladin has come back and is running young max Croker in the supersport class.

The ASBK boys are testing at the new Tailem Bend circuit at the moment. Here is a relaxed lap around the track by Troy Herfoss.

They are finding that the track is very sandy at the moment and it is very quickly eating tyres.

Im having a drive around it tomorrow so ill let you know

It is a bit bumpy at this early stage too

That seems a bit strange and concerning on a brand new circuit with little use.
How did you manage to get a drive around it?
Thoughts on the overall facilities? They're apparently very impressive though still a work in progress with the place still somewhat resembling a construction site.

I was an Inaugural member of the track about a year ago and they offered us a drive on the Open Day today. The bumps were mainly on the areas of the full circuit not used by most series, they haven't had enough time to cure fully hence a very reduced speed limit (80kph).

Pit building is absolutely massive, biggest pit complex in the country and the hotel is coming along. Campground is 3 times the size of PI I'm told. As far as spectator viewing it's a touch sparse with only the odd stand but they're building spectator mounds everywhere.

There's also a go-kart, drift and off-rod complex we didn't see.

Huge place, they've got huge plans to match
