I think this is a reasonable point and probably is an example of a common bias favouring batsmen...however (unlike spinners v quicks on Indian wickets where the contrast is obvious) I'm not sure if a few innings is a reasonable basis on which to assess a batsman as being suitable or not for those conditions. I think Khawaja is quality and could perform well on those decks all else being equal.
Khawaja is comfortably the worst player of spin among all the top Australian batsmen.

Including tour matches and A matches, Khawaja has now played 16 first class innings in Asia and passed 50 once.

He was also hopeless against Swann in those prepared wickets in 2013.

Are we seriously considering putting Mitchell Marsh or Glenn Maxwell in the side ahead of Usman Khawaja?! These selectors are a complete joke. Don't get me started on their unwavering infatuation with Shaun Marsh...the guy can bat but jeez he has a charmed life when it comes to selections. What Khawaja or others would give to get the favouritism he does.

FWIW here's the XI I'd be going in with:
  1. Warner
  2. Renshaw
  3. Khawaja
  4. Smith
  5. Handscomb
  6. Marsh (Shaun) - although I think Henriques would actually be the best option if in the squad
  7. Wade (only because Nevill and Hartley aren't in the squad)
  8. Starc
  9. O'Keefe
  10. Lyon
  11. Hazlewood
Mitch Marsh in Sri Lanka, average of 27, high score of 53. Kahawaja, average of 13, high score of 26. Let's not confuse Khawaja's home form with his subcontinent form. Not saying Mitch is the answer, but Khawaja has no right to feel aggrieved if he misses out.

Considering M Marsh.

Maxwell won't get near the side

Again fair point and thanks for sharing those stats - and 16 first class innings probably is a more than reasonable basis on which to make judgements.

That said (and now this is just personal opinion and obviously not supported by his sub-continent results) I think his overall numbers plus his recent form still make him a better choice than either Mitchell Marsh or Glenn Maxwell although it's not like for like. I accept that the argument for Shaun Marsh over Khawaja is a good one - although you can make a case either way.

But the same thing happened last year. Khawaja was in the form of his life in the home summer, getting hundred after hundred. Then he toured SL. Exact same thing has happened this season.

Well I don't disagree that he'll probably provide more than Mitchell Marsh or Maxwell with the bat.

But for some reason we're obsessed with a fifth bowling option.

If I could take a bet I'd put money on Maxwell and even almost M.Marsh making more runs than him, that's how dodgy he is imo.

absolute bugga that Renshaw got out. Would have been good to see him against the spinners.
Btw, still no spin from the hosts, hope they aren't douchey and just do pacemen the whole time.

Its 15 overs.

They've at least provided a good team (unlike us)

Cricinfo feed has Bird in the team not MMarsh. Was there a change in the team?

Edit: Seeing the actual match thread yes the final team was different to the one posted earlier in this thread

How the **** is Shaun Marsh back in the side
Too many chances and no reward I'm sick of this shit
It's those same Rod Marsh fanboys picking this team
And as for Mitch Marsh ohhh no no no no
I'm sick of this
Any Marsh that plays for Australia is cancer shouldn't be anywhere near the side

For me who cares about India the guy has had chances
Doesn't deserve to be back
Neither does Mitch for me
He's one of two players in the current Australian set up that averages over 40 in Asia. Walk up start.

From 2014 onward:

12 matches, 1024 runs at an average of 46.54, with 3 tons and 4 fifties. He should be a lock in Asia. Anybody who disagree should just sit down and shut up about cricket because they have clearly no idea.
