So Australia qualify for 2020 U23 AFC Championship to be in Thailand next January
Top 3 qualify for 2020 Olympics - unless one of the top 3 is Japan due to them hosting 2020 Games. Then 4th also qualifies.

Should be enough, and I hope so.

Can't believe I agree with him but Robbie Slater wrote a good piece for fox about the importance of going to the Olympics.

If I find the link it's worth a read. I do understand club coaches wanting their players around but this is national team football.

FFA play managerial musical chairs as van Egmond swaps Matildas for Young Socceroos | The World Game
By Dave Lewis

Van Egmond - whose daughter Emily was the fulcrum of Australia’s midfield in France - survived the controversial dismissal of ex-Matildas mentor Alen Stajcic five months back.
He helped mastermind Australia’s campaign alongside Stajcic’s successor, Ante Milicic, and fellow assistants Ivan Jolic and Mel Andreatta.
But with Norway putting paid to the Matildas’ prospects in Sunday’s penalty shootout in the round of 16, former Newcastle Jets championship-winning coach van Egmond will be re-deployed by FFA to - ironically - fill the gap with the Under-20s created when predecessor Milicic was handed the Matildas position in February.
Van Egmond, 53, is a former Joeys assistant and a senior coach with the now defunct Australian Institute of Sport.
His resume also includes two stints in charge of the Jets - including their title winning surge of 2008.
He also headed up the Young Matildas program, a role he combined with the senior team position he took on in 2015.
His impending move back to the men’s game comes at a challenging time amid ongoing debate over the lack of player pathways to the A-League and ongoing funding and structural issues for Australia’s under-age teams - from the under-17s through to the Under-23s.
The Young Socceroos were last in action in October at the 2018 AFC Championships in Indonesia, where with Milicic at the helm they lost 3-1 to Saudi Arabia in the quarter-finals, thus missing out on this month’s FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Poland where Ukraine beat Korea Republic in the final.
Australia have been drawn against Chinese Taipei, Laos and Macau in Group H of this year’s AFC Under-19 Championship qualifiers, with the games to take place between November 2-10.

Always a bit of a random tournament. Still has a soft spot with many because our best ever effort in a world cup was at this level. Amazing how many countries have players that seem to have full beards.

Random countries like Tajikistan and Solomon Islands appear in tournaments like this, but their full senior national teams never achieve anything. Development just stagnates past teen years?

Young Socceroos crowned AFF U-18 champions after dramatic late winner | The World Game

Australia had been pushed all the way by Malaysia in the contest before Adelaide product Brook broke the deadlock with a deft finish past Malaysian shot-stopper Firdaus Iman Mohd Fadhil to secure Australia's first AFF U-18 title in three years
The win was Australia's fifth overall AFF U-18 tournament win to draw them level with Thailand for the most titles in the competition's history.
It was an incredible bounce-back from the Gary Van Egmond-coached side, who were defeated 3-0 by Malaysia in the group stage.
The Young Socceroos controlled the tempo early on but lacked the cutting edge to break through a well-disciplined opposition.
Sydney FC rising star Marco Tilio was creating plenty of headaches for Malaysia's defence but still the Aussies were unable to find a breakthrough.
Malaysia, coached by former Socceroo Brad Maloney, had little opportunities to score in the opening 45 minutes, with their best chances coming from speculative long-range efforts which failed to test Australian custodian Kai Calderbank-Park.
Australia were lucky not to concede midway through the second half when Luqman Hakim spurned Malaysia's best chance of the game when he fired wide after a rapid counter-attacking move.
In the 75th minute Malaysia were forced into a goalkeeper change but substitute Irman Fadhil didn't have the best of starts with Brook sneaking in to score only moments after the replacement shot-stopper had come on.
There were a few nervy moments in the final minutes for van Egmond's side but they were able to cling on to hand Malaysia their second defeat after three consecutive finals appearances.

Great effort by the under 23s:

Al Hassan Toure's astonishing rise continued as the teenager scored on his first appearance for Australia U-23 in a 5-1 win against China U-23 in Chongqing.

The Adelaide United forward, born as a refugee in Guinea to Liberian parents, declared for his newly adopted nation last week and marked his first start with a goal from a stinging drive from outside the box to make it 3-0 before half-time.

Fourteen rising stars of the Hyundai A-League have been selected in Graham Arnold’s Australia U-23 squad for the AFC U-23 Championship.

The competition that pits the best of the Asian Football Confederation’s youth talent against each other takes place in Thailand between January 8-26, 2020.

Australia are drawn in Group A of the 16-team tournament alongside host nation Thailand, Iraq and Bahrain. The top three teams will join Japan in qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games men’s football event.

Melbourne City are best represented club with four of their youngsters selected – Denis Genreau, Thomas Glover, Connor Metcalfe and Ramy Najjarine – to pull on the Green and Gold jersey.

Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers and Brisbane Roar have two players called up to the tournament, while Adelaide United, Melbourne Victory, Perth Glory and Wellington Phoenix all have one selection.

Australia U-23 play a warm-up match on Friday, 3 January against Korea Republic U-23s in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, before the group opener five days later, meaning players will be away for a least two rounds of Hyundai A-League action.

2020 AFC U23 Championship aka 2020 Olympics qualifying began today in Thailand.
4 groups of 4 - Top 2 in each advance to quarter-finals. Top 3 (excluding Japan) go to Olympics.
We in a group with Thailand, Iraq and Bahrain.
Drew 1-1 with Iraq today. So should finish top 2 - goal difference will determine it.
Next games: Saturday - Thailand; Tuesday - Bahrain

We're paired up with Group B so quarter-final would be against one of Qatar, Japan, Saudi Arabia or Syria :grimacing:

Did it end up live streaming on YouTube? I know there was talk of no broadcaster picking it up.

Surprised it couldn't be added to Kayo even if it didn't make it to Foxtel's main channels.

Hopefully some of you stuck with that game. Absolute dog s**t in the first then managed to run over the top of Thailand. Some terrible turnovers and skill errors though.

Nice to see it finally made its way to Kayo (and foxtel), even if it is a joke that it was still being sorted today. Huge result tonight, I only saw the last 20 minutes or so, which sounds like was the most promising time for the Aussies as Thailand tired but still this gives them every chance of moving out of the group stages.

Over in Group B, Japan, who have no need to qualify for Olympics, have lost both games. If Qatar beats them in final game, they finish second, otherwise it's Syria and Saudi Arabia who go through. Regardless, won't be cakewalk in quarters.

Olyroos top AFC U-23 Championship group with Bahrain draw | The World Game

A proud Graham Arnold knows the Olyroos will have to improve if they are to win their next two games at the AFC U-23 Championship and secure a place at the Olympics for the first time since 2008.
A tense 1-1 draw with Bahrain at Thammasat Stadium was good enough for Australia to top their group at the continental championship and advance to the quarter-finals along with hosts Thailand.
Australia remained unbeaten in Group A with one win and two draws and will face Syria, Saudi Arabia or Qatar at Bangkok's Rajamangala Stadium on Saturday (Sunday AEDT) for a spot in the semi-finals.
The tournament's top three will qualify to Tokyo 2020 later this year and join Games hosts Japan as Asia's contingent.
A neat left-foot finish from Ramy Najjarine after he was played in by a sublime Rene Piscopo through-ball on 34 minutes put the Olyroos ahead on Tuesday night.
Bahrain's Mohamed Marhoon equalised on the stroke of halftime when he fired past Thomas Glover direct from a free kick.
Both teams squandered chances in the second half to win the match with substitute Nicholas D'Agostino - Australia's two-goal hero in the win over Thailand on Saturday - guilty of a glaring miss in stoppage time when he flashed a header wide with the goal at his mercy.
Arnold was pleased for the Australians to have completed part one of the qualifying equation.
"It was the first time since 2014 that the Olympic team has got through this first phase, and that was our first goal," he said.
"Now we really have to step up with improvement in our performance.
"It is a learning experience for these young kids to play in these tournaments."
The Olyroos will have the advantage of a day's extra rest over their next opponents with Arnold's focus now on getting his team prepared physically and mentally.
"I think the boys have done exceptionally well in this climate to play three games in six day, not many would have done that in a long time, so we will get them fresh and ready," he said.
