Autopsy Autopsy vs Carlton - absolutely bashed the shit out of the Blues

Watched the game live in the US as loved every minute it of it...until the last quarter.

Looking at the end of the game, Clarko looked like we lost the game rather than won which is a sense that he has a higher standard that the lads need to get too which is, once we have the knee to the throat, never loosen up until the siren sounds.

I really can't wait until this sides blossoms and starts turning that Carlton game into an 80pt win, watch their fans leave at half to mid way through the 3rd.

Go Roos!!

That higher standard is something some on here have been aware of for a long time. The disappointment about last week's result goes hand-in-hand with the joy.

Going in, some knew we were capable of football like that, but not many expected it. But then we executed it, and those who'd alluded to our talent this whole time could revel in the fact that this skill they'd harped on about was coming to the fore. Then, just as the champagne was being broken out, the old North appeared again, nearly lost us the game, and reminded us that for all the healing, the club still has some serious fractures.

Yes, it's a case of the disappointment only really occurring because the ceiling throughout the game was so high, but that's a perfectly natural emotional reaction to have. I'm still not sure whether a win in the fashion we had is better than an arm-wrestle in which we pull away in the last ten minutes and hold them at bay. We relied on a grubber going an inch wide to breathe easy, after having led by 46 points 25 minutes earlier. There is very much grounds to be disappointed about that. I said before the game that surely there's no outcome where a win involves disappointment, but they proved me wrong.

Clarkson knows better than anyone hopefully what needs to happen, and it will likely involve a ton of work to iron out that embedded tendency. And it is embedded. We can run out games now. We have a core crux of players that are no longer teenagers. But we still stoop back to those levels of fragility. Teams will trail us into a three quarter time break knowing the game is well up for grabs, until we show them otherwise. Melbourne gave up. Carlton didn't. Collingwood last year didn't. West Coast last year didn't (x2). Ball's in our court

…..and then there’s ‘83!

Phillip Thread please … 😉

PS. I am a Phillips supporter, but have to admit the midfield is looking relatively good at the moment.

PPS. Would keep Wardlaw in for his intensity around the contest, but after absolutely baking him for burning RHJ on the outside in the 3rd quarter going inside 50.

No its not. Scores from defensive half is where you win games of footy, Carlton were kind of unlucky. It s all about Turnover. Carlton had 16 shots at goal from our turnover.

Scores from stoppage is overly high and far above afl averages.

They had 11 shots generated from our attacking half.

To suggest the midfield is fine is delusional. Another delusional Norf supporter

Our forward half pressure was good. Curtis, Parker, Konstanty.

The midfield defensive game is mud

While scores from turnover are important now there is nothing to say that as the game changes (which it always does) scores from stoppage will become as important again in the second half of the decade. Turnovers in your own forward half are also becoming as important as turnovers in the back half.

A couple of things:

1. Doesn’t the fact that we scored above the AFL average from stoppages mean that our midfield is doing well?

2. If we continue to fix up our skills and transition, should that not also mean that we get scored against less by reason of our turnovers?

Their fans were leaving at half to midway third quarter on Saturday anyway!!!

Absolutely, 100%.
Yeah I bawled my eyes out when we lost to Hawthorn in 1993, by less than a goal? We hadn’t beaten them for years. I was 8. Still remember it clearly, a drunk bloke on the train helped my parents console me, getting me to hold his can of VB as he took a piss in the walkway between carriages you had on those old trains: “we’re still on top mate, we’re still on top”. I’m sure the beer was taken out of my hands immediately, it all happened pretty fast.
Strange what you remember.

LOL! Hard to argue based on recent evidence.

"We haven’t got a good player under 25"

Indeed hard to argue - the only thing I would say on a tangent is that Mathieson is one of their problems with over-entitlement; any time they hit troubled waters he’s in the press microwaving his membership

This is no coincidence. The coach who many have written off is slowly starting to put his own imprint on the group.
It takes time. Especially after the horror two years he had with media accusations and whatnot.

Viney was right about everything starting this year. Its the first year Clarkson has had the freedom to do the bolded without second guessing himself and concentrating on the external bullshit.

Love it. You know it's the beginning of the end when the Carlton power brokers start weighing in.
They can't help themselves but to wade in. Must be exhausting being a fully committed supporter of the Baggers

I know I won't miss it when we're contenders, but isn't it wonderful when we defeat a team, and the scrutiny on that team and their frailties becomes so intense

Ah yes but in Round 3, 1994, we got them good!
Carey - 3 votes (7 goals)
A Stevens - 2 votes
W Schwass - 1 vote

Longmire 5 goals

173 to 46

An absolute rout.

Haha I remember that too! Not as clearly, but level 2 of the Southern Stand on a Friday night watching North dominate was a huge part of my childhood. A happy childhood it was too.

I didn't enjoy David King's analysis. It was Carlton focused and came across like someone urging them to sort their issues out.

However.

I do like the perception that Xerri & Co are stone cold arseholes going around messing up Carlton players.

Urm .. is it just me or was there nothing in that? X tackles him near the line, gives him a tiny push. Why do Carlton need to fly the flag for that? A couple of them give X a little push afterwards. Nothing to see here, folks. Looks like Kingy was trying to say X / North hard, TDK / Carlton soft, and struggling to find a good clip to illustrate.
