First watch I thought "Eh, fair enough, silly tackle", but on replay you could see it was a perfect attack of the player and no sling involved.

Difference being the ump had the better view than I did and still called it wrong.

Agree with the last two points very strongly, but Kerch spent his first two quarters looking like Stephen Curry ball in hand only to mongrel the kick 3/4s of the time.

We should expect more.

It was possible. Improbable, yes. But possible. The fact that we were still in a position where we were worried about choking it is a good reflection of this team. More talented than many of its counterparts (Carlton's list is chock full of plodders), but about as resolute as a pappadum.

Bank the win. But we are still being held back by this bizarre brain zap we suffer when we take a decent lead in the fourth. I don't buy the 'out of gas' stuff. We're a professional footy team that visibly ran West Coast off its feet. This is a different North to last year.

We should be looking at least at St Kilda, Richmond, Sydney, with rabid determination to **** them up. We have the cattle to do it. We still don't have the mentality to do it. This'll be where Clarkson earns the big bucks: at 3QT breaks, where he presents them with a choice; put down the hammer or wilt

I flew over for this game last night with my youngest daughter who just saw her first win.

Our co pilot was named Wardlaw. We were always gonna win today.

You don't get to tell people what they can and can't do on here simply cos you have no power to control that. Telling someone that, especially after a win, is very poor behaviour.

I’ll go as far as to say that the substitution of Wardlaw was a coaching calamity. RHJ should have gone off. He played well but he was the proper tactical choice. You should never remove someone who is hurting the oppositio - ever.

If they can't cover a player who had played an average game leaving they have bigger issues. Whole midfield stopped.

We ran the game out bloody well last week against Freo. We can do it. What separates the great teams is that they are far more consistent than we are.

At least we have a level of football that we can actually strive to bring for 4 qtrs now

He was pretty good but really, switching out George in a tactical move was a tactical error for mine. I can't see any reason for having made the substitution with the team on top as they were.

The defence was under siege in the first and last quarters and can take a fair bit of credit.
Carlton might've kicked inaccurately but compared to previous years - and the earlier part of this season - we aren't allowing anywhere near as many easy goal scoring opportunities. We've started to be able to weather storms better (aside from 8 minutes against Freo). Comben, Pink, Logue, FOS, Hardeman and LMAC did a lot of good defensive things today. Obviously others are getting back to help with the adjustments. Conceding just 10.13 from 56 entries is a huge improvement from the earlier rounds.

However I think you're dramatically overstating Wardlaw's 'impact' in the first three quarters of today's game. I don't think he was really ever 'hurting' the opposition today.

Even though he played the first three quarters of the game before being subbed off, Wardlaw's time on ground was only 45%. So a bit of quick maths suggests Wardlaw played roughly 60% of the first three quarters he was available for. That would put him dead-last for the entire team.

In that 60%~ TOG, he registered 11 touches at a paltry 54.5% disposal efficiency, with 2 turnovers and 2 clangers. He had 0 clearances (the only midfielder today who didn't get at least 1), 1 solitary tackle, and 10 'pressure acts' which for context, is fewer than guys like RHJ (on 12) and Larkey (on 14). And as a reminder, he didn't get a single disposal until midway through the second quarter.

Now, let me be clear; I love George Wardlaw. I think his ceiling is enormous. I think his future is bright.

But the facts are he had a stinker today, and it's come after a month (or more) of pretty poor form.

Subbing him off was the correct move today.

Most pleasing aspect isn't the result imo. It would be the result if the margin was 30+. It'd be the bloody result if it was an arm wrestle all day and we pulled ahead at the end, but clearly neither team operates like that.

It's the fact we have a team of sorts coming together. Larkey's up forward and Darling's doing enough to make it a functional duo.

Small forward cabinet is fuller than it was. Konstanty brings his tackle pressure, but can't kick, Curtis now does pretty much everything to a good level. Zurhaar there to snaffle whatever comes his way.

Midfield unit has been waxed lyrical about. Still think Patch is shit at his job, but we get it done on talent alone. Parker massive. X likewise, and he's a clear net good despite the fact his clearance quality would have to be the worst in the league.

Multiple outside runners mean we've outgrown the days of Bailey Scott

trying to do everything. Stephens permanently on a wing, having taken on stern feedback last year, Colby mingles between the arcs in a role that's working for him and is generally providing passable defensive effort, Daniel plays an important distribution role despite limitations.

And I'm most impressed with the strength of the defence. The only part of the ground not playing below its potential. FOS, Hardeman, LMac in form, Logue in shape, and Pink is a good mix.

It's fragile, and relies on three oldies who we'll have to replace at some stage, but for now, we have a team that appears more rounded than anything we've put out in a long, long time. I hope it lays the foundation for the mental demons to be fully banished

We’ll agree to disagree. I know you and Nostra aren’t great fans of Wardlaw. That’s fair enough. We all have our favourites. I’m of the opinion you always back in passionate players, who put their body on the line. I’ll be very surprised if Wardlaw ever gets omitted or subbed again. If he’s injured, that’s a different matter.
