The Sat Night commentators on Fox were laughing about the concept of 'Sunday Umpires' - it's an open secret now that not only do the shit/small teams get the shit timeslot, they also get the shit umpires as well.
Nicholls and Eleni… QED

Better than she normally does, I agree. At least, that’s how it looked live.
Not a fan, are you, Sammy.

More missed calls for them overall I reckon. We came away ok. That's the last three games against Adelaide teams where we've had the better of it imo, and against everyone else... not so much the case

Saw something written today that Sunday should provide closure with the JHF saga.

Are they effing kidding? The guy left us high and dry when we were on our knees as a club.

He didn’t indicate any possibility that he would stay so we could get a better trade either.

Port are absolutely no where and once Butters departs it’s going to get a lot worse.JHF while good has shown he isn’t truly in the elite and even more pressure will fall onto him.

Not to mention the booing and abuse he copped seemed to make his game worse.

He deserves every bit if shit he gets and I’d be disappointed if that’s not the sort of reception he will get well into the foreseeable future.

I wish Port Adelaide nothing but the worst luck an AFL club can have. I want JHF to play 250 games, in a side that’s p00.

We also thought that the umps gave us a far better run than normal. Even a couple of 50/50s seemed to go our way.

But I’ve had concerns with the standard of umpires for a fair while now. I can remember Ron Barassi on WoS having a strong opinion about the umps back in around 1977 or 78 (he waited until we won before making his point). I think it’s gone downhill since then.

I can remember one game against Richmond in 80s where we were getting ridiculous free kicks - it was embarrassing. We thrashed them. And maybe that breakthrough 20 goal win against hawthorn - I’m not sure but we probably did better than break even with the umpires that night but I was too emotionally invested in bagging the hawk players from the boundary line to notice (and I wrecked my voice so badly that night that I’ve never been able to scream abuse after 1/4 time ever again).

I mean, scream support for the team.

Abuse? Nah, yeah.

I'm not sure about whether he will get abuse to the same level or if he will react a certain way but one thing is for sure: when he plays us, even if no-one reminds him, he will always question whether he made the right decision or - if the decision was already made by "others" in his circle - whether he could have stood firm and stayed with us.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say that every time he steps onto a footy field, this abandonment of us lurks somewhere in the back of his mind. Just waiting to add to the "I'm not as good as I thought I might be" type of thoughts.

So we might still be a bit angry, but he's the one who has to carry this. That's worse, I think.

That Larkey high call was ridiculous. I reckon he looked guilty as **** high fiving his mates as he went back to take it.

Of course, the universe more than squares these things, especially when you've got four of the bastards running around, so we can't do much other than take it and run

They certainly took a different approach to umpiring in the fourth quarter. It suddenly began to look like a regular game.

Maybe, maybe not. Who knows? We’ll have to wait for his autobiography - which I seriously doubt will ever be written. In any case, we wouldn’t believe it. I’m very much in the “water under the bridge, we move on” camp. All that counts is that we need George Wardlaw to get out on the park and Goad to arrive. 👍🔥

There were a couple of harsh HTBs as well, and I'm not sure what the 50 that gave Charlie his long shot at goal was for.

The 50 was there, going by the rulebook. Georgiades overstepped. What I don't like is that I could see it coming from a mile away. In order to slow down in time, you have to give up on contesting the ball. Another rule that goes against players' instincts. Some leeway wouldn't go astray.

HTBs.... I didn't mind the Farrell one. But then Parker did the exact same thing and wasn't pinged.

Regardless, I'm sure moments of that game will this year be compensated for multiple times over. We're not gonna stop getting the shit umps, and that'll mean we cop the short end of the stick plenty

This was great from Simmo! One of the other commentators said something about how the umpiring had been good this year and Simmo's reply was "we haven't seen the Sunday umpires yet."

The problem with leeway is that you give players 5mm and they proceed to take 5m.

that was awesome. it might have been the high from the win, but it doesn't look like Clarko has lost the players.

I hope our media team make those videos a weekly thing.
If all that stuff were true there's no way they'd play like that.

Luke was captain and Daniel was the VC at a competitive club full of leadership. You don't get those roles if you are a mute.
True but Parker does have real charisma. He's a born leader. I wouldn't say that about the other two.

To be fair Parker is different gravy to that pair. He organises off the ball and is always talking to his teammates. A top footy brain. Daniel is there to use the ball. LMac to win some 1 on 1s. Neither really offer that ‘coach on the field’ Parker does. They all three played well though. Let us hope that continues.
He simply sees the game better than they do.

Well the poets tell how Pancho fell
And Lefty's living in a cheap hotel
The border's quiet and Cleveland's cold
And so the story ends we're told
Pancho needs your prayers it's true
But save a few for Lefty too
He just did what he had to do
And now he's growing old

And a few grey Federales say
They could have had him any day
They only let him go so wrong
Out of kindness, I suppose

The most pleasing thing about this win, was that we were in control of the game for the full 4 Qtrs. It never felt like Port were going to go on an extended run, we always felt like we had a bit in reserve. Can't remember the last time it felt like that. In all of our recent wins, the opposition has controlled a decent portion of the game. Not on Sunday.
