Autopsy Autopsy Vs Wet toast - it was nice while it lasted

Once logue went down, it was apparent within about five minutes that the McDonald v Waterman matchup was terrible, and yet we persisted.

West coast played far better than Essendon did today and last week. Wouldn’t be surprised if they take a small step up on the ladder.

**** me the umpiring was appalling. We had a couple shockers in our favour, but there must have been ten bizarre decisions that went against us.

Our midfield set up after q1 was really strange.

Weirdly, not as depressed about the result as I thought I’d be, all things considered.
It won’t show on the stats sheet, but I reckon it was Waterman that gave them that initial spark that got their guys up and about.

And all he did was attack the footy hard. It sometimes really is that ****ing simple.

I feel sick for even admitting this, but sometimes I wonder how things could've gone had we just swallowed our pride and relocated to the Gold Coast in 2007. Sydney and Brisbane have maintained and glaze their Victorian Supporters all the time and the Resources and AFL backing have ensured decades of success. It would've absolutely been devastating, but ask yourselves, would we really be any worse off?

I'm absolutely about to baked for this comment, but it's just something that came to mind during the past few hours of reflection.

This probably isn't the thread for this discussion, and I do apologise if I've angered some people.

It's a fair question imo

I think many of us wouldn’t be here to answer you .

I don't dislike McDonald, this is likely his last year and we need to get the back six that is going to be around for the future up and running asap. I don't want to go into 2027 with nobody in the backline playing more than a handful of games together.

When available, I think Hardeman, Goater, Whitlock and Thredgold are a priority. Clarko has allegedly already wasted 2 years, we have to do what is right for the club long-term.

The same goes for Pink, Logue, Corr, etc. Our backline is an abomination, I can cop it leaking goals if we are blooding a young really talented group of young kids we hope will be the future of the club.

Is Comben the only one back there currently that is going to be around longer than a couple of years?

That could’ve easily been 3.1 if not for Waterman’s inaccuracy I’m afraid.

“Severely undersized?” He’s 2cm shorter.

McDonald dropped for Hardeman is surely the easiest selection decision next week.

Yeah height is all that matters. Should have tried Zane Duursma on him then.

Waterman is very obviously much bigger and stronger than Luke. It's why Waterman gets a key defender each week.

Anyone listing Luke as their first issue with our performance tonight is clueless.

Does the Gold Coast mean we can select a better list? We have poor list management teams and it reflects in performance.

'Pleased' we fought the game out against the wooden spooners who have won 1 game since 2024.

Jesus Christ. We really are cooked if this is the attitude coming from the top

It’s a press conference. A stage managed media spectacle. What is he meant to say, I wish we’d been belted by 10 goals? I’m more concerned about his coaching in quarters 2 and 3.

Well to say that was disappointing is an understatement. Reminded me of Rocky 3, when Rocky comes out and hits Clubber Lang with haymakers in the first round and then after that Clubber Lang took Rocky out with devastating blows, in our case every time they went forward they goaled, some of those shots were crazy, they did it time after time, good first quarter and then couldn't come back and win it, they got there ar*e up and that was that.

Now for the positive points, we never gave up, even late in the game we still had a chance to win it which was absolutely insane with the goals that they kicked and the way they did it. I don't like naming players because they are all trying but goodness gracious me, young Konstanty had one of the worst games out there, made so many mistakes early that it wasn't funny, kicked a nice goal late but now after two below average games there will probably be two or three changes for the game against the bombers.

The warlord, Hardeman and either Matt or Will to come into the team to face Essendon. Disappointed but we should win our next two games and after watching port destroy the bombers in Adelaide we get our chance to put them to the sword, the last three years we've had chances to win but haven't been good enough. Some of the reactions on here are ridiculous, taking everything into account we weren't good enough today but the next two weeks will show that our form is pretty bloody good. Watched Brad Scott's interview after the game against Port and it was shaking the head stuff, really.

We got a bit lucky in the first. WC had lots of turnovers. We made them pay because their miskicks went to our players who were set up well behind the ball.

Rest of the game:
  • We dropped out effort around the contest by 10%. We weren't getting to effective tackles like we were in the first, same with smothers. I was hoping at half time it was more effort than the impact of the heat - effort we can change, impact of the heat we couldn't. We didn't bring that intensity back until it was too late.
  • We didn't set ourselves behind the ball as well. They got free reign through the middle once they were on the move, we were always chasing. It's the work rate to set up behind the ball through the middle, and we didn't work hard enough to get there (we did in the first).
  • Our mids got back to their old habits of being drawn into the contest without impacting it. WC get a clear handball and its out the front of the pack because we've been sucked in and wrong footed, they were running in waves with no one to hold them up. Even if they did mis hit a possession, we weren't there to take advantage of it because we weren't set behind the ball.

They did pull some crap out of their R's at times, but a disciplined, desperate and hard working team wouldn't have given the run on.

Are the fans mickey in this metaphor?

What happened?
A win
By how much?
Flogged them
Thats good, we did it
Yeh we did it, you dont have to worry bout nothin no more
We did everything right

Sick of so many of these spuds not keeping feet and going to ground !! 🤬

It’s some pretend pho-extra effort BS … but it’s hopeless - You are out of the ground ball game the minute that happens.

Yes I’m looking at you - Comben, McDonald, Zurharr
LMac still hasn't been coached out of going to his feet at every contest.

There is just too much of a leadership void. Larkey is actually not a bad leader but he is being asked to carry far too much of the load. It's so weird because when we were challenged last week by the exact same team that won by 10 goals today, we buried them.

I can't figure it out and it's not due to inexperience (we were more experienced than they were). I'm lost as to what happened today. Completely lost.

We would have been dead as the NMFC had we moved to GC. If that isn't a bridge too far then you can always change the club you follow on BF and go to their board with the 3 other people following them.

The problems we have can be fixed. Dying is something you can't fix.

Just quietly, I don't think our backline was the 'main' problem today. It was our midfield that was the issue.

Can they be fixed? The whole joint reeks of unprofessionalism.

We win a game and the Club all but releases a Netflix Doco.

We lose and the Coach says he's pleased we made a pitiful comeback against a side we were leading by 5 goals in the first quarter.

Are there going to be actual consequences for failure this year? I don't think sacking Clarko if we finish bottom four again is going to be enough to course correct the Titanic of Rebuilds.

Does anyone at AFL house even care about the terrible state of our club? There frankly should've been an intervention years ago.

If Clubs bigger than us like Carlton and Essendon can't get their s*** together even with their superior resources and advantages, what makes anyone really think we can just magically do it?

To clarify my intentions with my original post, I'm trying to provoke discussion about the long term consequences of not relocating when the option was on the table. The Good being that we keep our club in Melbourne but the potential oversight of us being left behind by the AFL and not being big enough to get ourselves out of this mess.

I think it's at least worth a rational discussion, even if in a separate thread and this is the only real space on the internet where I believe there will be good faith and well thought out arguments as I don't really care what fans of other clubs have to say on this subject.

I'm genuinely worried about what another terrible season could do this club and the Supporters.

Can the problems be fixed though?

We’re not even dying at this stage, but not really alive either. Just in a perennial zombie state staggering around wondering why we are never allowed to see sunlight. Is that better?

Ppl just wanna enjoy footy. That’s all.

30 degree day against a younger, more athletic WA team on a bigger deck might help you.

We run Port off their legs last week and we got the treatment today, particularly in the middle quarters.

The Eagles had to travel from Gold Coast.

Not buying it. We bottled it because of the mental struggles we've been seeing for years. No one stands up when required regardless of conditions.

In the last quarter, after they threw everything at us, we had every chance to get back in but our ball use was horrific.

But then you see Paul Curtis hit an absolute peach of a kick to Larkey on the lead and I'm like 'wtf'.

Something is not making sense.
