Man, between numbers 2 & 3, they would had to have ben 6 of the most excrutiating hours of my life

Re: "AVATAR" - the new James Cameron movie to come out in 2009

Means nothing without adjusting for inflation.

Not necessarily, the problem with the inflation adjusted figures of movies like 'Gone With the Wind' is that those pictures were around before the time of home video and so would have been re-released over and over at the cinemas which generates artificially high estimate of box office takings.

That's not really an argument for compounding the problem by not normalising the figures though. At least adjusting for inflation gets you back to an even footing on the basis of box office sales.

Even if you just look at relatively recent movies, if you adjust Titanic for inflation it goes from being neck-and-neck with Avatar to being miles ahead. Raw grosses are essentially meaningless.

Yeah, fair enough. Though I still think inflation adjusted figures are quite sketchy, especially when attempting to account for world wide gross not just US domestic. Probably entering a grey area here, but socio-economic factors should also be considered when evaluating past box office totals.

Re: "AVATAR" - the new James Cameron movie to come out in 2009

I don't care about box office dollars. Where's the stats for bums on seats as a percentage of population?

Saw this over the weekend in 3D and whilst the graphics and the world "Pandora" were very, very cool, the storyline sucked so hard, that it was hard to stay even mildly interested in it. The middle section of the film was particularly boring. The only side tangent of the storyline that slightly interested me was the one with...

...Jake losing the ability to distinguish between his real self and his dream/fake self, something which wasn't really explored at all beyond maybe three minutes total of screen time.

Wouldn't watch it again and I'll stick to my anime until someone makes an interesting movie using the same sort of graphical technology.

Re: "AVATAR" - the new James Cameron movie to come out in 2009

but you also have to understand that the inflation adjusted chart is only for the american domestic box office.

Avatar is pretty much a worldwide phenomenon.....even more so than titanic....

some of the record numbers includes markets like Russia......which wasn't as strong during Titanic's run.

also its only been 7 weeks....

the ceiling imo could be anything from 2 billion to 2.5 billion

if you take into account a performance similar to Titanic's home video market...it will be 3 billion plus.

something like Gone in the Wind was rereleased dozens of times over decades.

there was no home video market back then.

Much like Wayne Rooney's wife, Coleen has displayed over the years, this film is a perfect example of money not being able to buy class.

Shocking movie.

His comments at the end of Part 2 about the relative success of Titanic and Avatar, and them both being "big money" blockbusters that were unusually released in the northern hemisphere winter are interesting.

i m a fan of Avatar series and have enjoyed all moves and tv show related to it. Movie of Avatar i had enjoyed two times and that only when, i become so sick or lazy by watch Avatar the Last airbender all episodes over and over again. it is also awesome but still i like to give preference to watch it's episodes.

They are releasing Avatar: The Last Airbender movie this year and it looks interesting.
The film originally had Avatar (The Last Airbender) in it, but to avoid confusion with the film of the same name (James Cameron's Avatar), the word was dropped from the title. So, officially, the tittle of the film is, The Last Airbender.
