yes I got the bit where he said it was worth $20 million an ounce or whatever on Earth. But that doesn't explain what it is used for, only the companies motive for ripping up Pandora and killing the natives. :rolleyes: This makes it a pretty weak plot point IMHO.

It's like the "Rabbit's Foot" or whatever it was in the last Mission: Impossible movie. Built up to be the most important thing but never actually explained what it is. By the end you're just sitting there thinking WTF?

Not that I think those kinds of "important without being explained" things can't work in the right context. The briefcase in Pulp Fiction is a classic example. But I don't think they used it right here.

It's just a 'MacGuffin', a device used to drive the plot, some are more subtle than others ('The Allspark' from Transformers being perhaps the least subtle of all!).

Lol JuJu, very good point.

I thought this was movie of the year, ahead of District 9. I was completely submersed (right word?) by it's epicness after a short while and enjoyed getting lost in the visuals. The story is not as bad as some people are making it out to be, Neytiri and Jakesully (love how they just said it as one name) had great chemistry and some pretty touching moments.

To the person who said they didn't put enough time into building the love story, well how much time does it need? They met, she was fascinated by him, she was told to teach him their ways and they started falling for each other. I don't see why they'd want to use half of the movie to create something that can be done in about 40 minutes, plus their relationship and bond grew throughout the movie at a good pace.

In comparison to other movies this year I give it a 10, maybe a little less when in terms of all-time.

Jesus that was a lot of money put to no good use! I curse George Lucas and all his evil minions for making it vogueish for every space of screen in every scene to be aching with frenetic activity. Sometimes less is more James

Must we all have ADHD because we enjoy spectacular visuals once in a while? Am I now pigeon-holed because I enjoyed Avatar?

Saw it the another night. After the 3D novelty wore off i realised it was a pretty average movie. Incredibly predictable, i could see what was going to happen within about 30 minutes. Cliche' as all hell.

And **** me was it long. Nearly 3 hours?!

The amount of people who say the story was weak but I can forgive it because of the visuals is worrying. And I'm not just talking about this board. People don't like thinking anymore.

meh, intelligent movies are better watched at home on DVD where there are no annoying teenagers distracting you.....

cinema tickets are pushing towards the twenty dollar mark and for that moolah I want my eyes to explode :thumbsu:

ummm no I am not. :eek: I am saying that as a plot point it is lazy or too easy. Evil Greedy aliens versus the noble savage. It is such a clique. It could have been done so much better.

I am NOT asking for you to explain what it is or what it does as you can't. You don't know. But again, thanks for stating the obvious. The depths of your intelligence is a wonder to behold.:rolleyes:

just wondering, you know, when sully was back in human form did he hide his avatar first before coming back? what if his avatar was attacked my a pandorian animal whilst not in operation?

I just assumed that most of the time that he was back in human form was when his avatar was sleeping (in the hammock). They showed the times where his avatar just collapsed unconscious, because they were usually unplanned awakenings by his human form that led to something else happening.

i think the film represented the best and worst of mankind. it could have delved into the depths of the human emotion, soul and aura more however. the geographical positioning of the trees and its related waterfalls demonstrated the power of good over evil. on one hand we are all biologically predisposed to side with the human element. however, as we being to study and understand the complexities of the alien race one empathises and almost morphs into the blue hued creatures.

the movie demonstrated a clear understanding of evolution. the charging rhinos with a broader horn an example. the marauding pack of dogs/wolf like creatures - a metaphor for darkness, a surrounding evil that global corporations embody. the strategy employed when they faced a foreign object (scully) illustrated perfectly the capitalistic nature of earth - the collusion and co-operation of business monsters surrounding a smaller, feeble body. quite clearly the writers wanted to pack to portray the major oil and petrol distributors, whilst scully manfully represented the small business owner fighting for his survival.

global warming should not be ignored. ignore it and giant robots controlled by coffee addicted corporals will invade your lands for its rich cocoa plants.

knew the story was never gonna blow my mind

think it had a pg rating - other than back to the future and indiana jones, dont really know too many out and out genuine blockbuster films with amazing stories

star wars - good v evil
lord of the rings - same
titanic - boat sinks

visually better than anything ever attempted

sure, the story could have been better, but its all about the visuals, and what that means going forward

I've never been one for special effects, however I have to admit I have never seen anything like it before.

The story line was o.k...Reminded me allot of the last Samurai, but still one of the better movies I have seen this year.

biggest load of crap i have seen in a long time.

graphics/visuals were sweet though, only to see how good video games may look in the future.
