AFLW Awards - Season Seven

Remove this Banner Ad

North Melbourne and Richmond's draw today... possibly one heck of an omen, looking toward the league B&F count.

Garner has definitely won the Coaches' award for the second time, but no chance she'll get the Players' MVP again. That's going to Conti, for sure.

More on the AFLPA awards: I'd like to see Alicia Eva win Best Captain. Ebony O'Dea for Most Courageous wouldn't be a bad choice. And I gotta go with Jasmine Fleming for Best First Year Player.

And I gotta go with Jasmine Fleming for Best First Year Player.
Fleming v Ewings is really interesting. I expect that all the awards will go to Fleming, but they're really close - at least statistically. Roberts performing consistently well playing forward on a completely rubbish team is pretty impressive too.

I wonder how many of this year's first year players would have won the award most other years.

Ewings looks good, but Fleming has dominated the middle. Her absence was glaring against Fremantle.
Won't be surprised to see Ewing win though, it's about promoting the game, not necessarily the "best"

I don't understand how giving Ewings awards over Fleming is promoting the game more than the opposite.

If we compare Ewings, Fleming and another RS nom with similar stats, I'm not seeing one who is clearly ahead:

Player 1 averages:
10.1 kicks, 4.3 handballs, 14.4 disposals, 8 contested possessions, 4.5 turnovers, 2.1 marks (.4 contested), 6.1 tackles, 2.9 clearances (.3 centre clearances), 300.4 metres gained, .1 goals

Player 2 averages:
9.6 kicks, 4.9 handballs, 14.4 disposals, 8.7 contested possessions, 4.3 turnovers, 1.2 marks (0 contested), 4.3 tackles, 3.2 clearances (1 centre clearance), 221.2 metres gained, 0 goals

Player 3 averages:
11.5 kicks, 2.4 handballs, 13.9 disposals, 8.3 contested possessions, 4.7 turnovers, .9 marks (.1 contested), 4.9 tackles, 3.9 clearances (.9 centre clearances), 294.9 metres gained, .4 goals

Fleming probably wins it. I think it should be closer than it probably will be.

I just want Alice Edmonds as AA ruck. Most total and hit outs to advantage. Such a great pickup.
When she played for Tiges vflw one of her first games was the indigenous round.
She got best on and won the players award for the game she said she didn’t even know there was an award in the interview.
For a taller player she gets down below her knees quickly and reacts quickly in traffic.
She’s a ripper.

Gold Coast 2022 S7 AFLW Club Champion Top 10:
1. Charlie Rowbottom (279)
2. Alison Drennan (240)
3. Claudia Whitfort (237)
4. Vivien Saad (214)
5. Lauren Bella (212)
=6. Lauren Ahrens (210)
=6. Daisy D’Arcy (210)
8. Jac Dupuy (208)
9. Bess Keaney (185)
10. Tara Bohanna (182)

Top 4 all from Victoria, so too 7 of the top 10.

Howarth and Jones quite obviously judged on a different scale to Saad and Dupuy.

The supposedly snubbed Dee referred to in the article is... Eliza West?? Not Hanks or Lampard, who actually were snubbed. Not Birch or Heath, who were no worse than last season when they made the team/squad.

Mimi Hill made the squad last season despite playing only 6 of 10 games. Played every game this time and averaged more disposals, but misses out. Find the logic there.

Schleicher was still the Pies' best player this season despite basically missing 2 games. Seems to me both her and Chelsea Randall should've been picked, or neither.

This

Also was Jenna Bruton particularly good this season? Still a quality player but with how tough it is to even make the squad as a midfielder did she really deserve it?

She didn't have a better season than Riddell.

I’m just glad Kelli Underwhelm is part of the selection panel.
*geez
It's a bizarre panel altogether. 3 AFL execs, 3 Media personalities, an ex-player turned developing coach, an ex-AFLW assistant coach now SANFLW senior coach, and Melbourne's list manager from a terrible patch in their history.

Mind you I don't think it needs to mirror the boys club vibes of the men's panel but surely a better group can be formed.

They’re not hamstrung by tradition.
I wouldn’t mind seeing every teams Captain put forward their best team from the comp for the year and they select the consensus from the leagues leaders

Aimee Schmidt unsurprisingly missed out on the top 10, despite going back-to-back in the goalkicking. Her tally of 5 was the second-fewest goals kicked among the leaders from each club (Port had the lowest with a four-way tie on 4).

Bowers and Parker join Conti as the only four-time club B&F winners... for now. Blackburn and Prespakis will probably join that group soon, and Conti likely to move up to five.

Hamilton is the third-youngest club B&F winner (older than Lewis and Prespakis but younger than Patrikios--all 18yo at the time of their final game in each respective season). Not expecting Fleming, still 17 in her last game this season, to beat Lucas-Rodd in Hawthorn's count. Ewings might win Port's and, if so, would slot between Hamilton and Patrikios.

10th ended up being Bella Smith on 27 votes. Not quite sure how they missed that in their initial reporting but there we go.

Panel would be a laughing stock if that was the case. Surely they have 4 across the forward and back lines at least.
Is it a Vic centric panel?

We don't have a dominant mid that gets talked up week in, week out.

Ally Anderson has been spoken about as elevating her game to another level, but she's not gushed over by the Vic commentators.

Breanna Koenen has been a rock in defence, but hardly gets any plaudits.

Wardlaw was the dominant key forward this year, so she's a lock.

Greta Bodey's season wasn't as good as last years. Natalie Grider is still an emerging talent. And Tahlia Hickie doesn't even make it in to the top 3 rucks discussion on this board.
