AFLW Season 7 MVP Nominees

The nominees for Season 7 of the AFLW MVP Awards have been revealed, thanks to Snaffle.

Randall, despite missing three games, nominated for MVP by Adelaide (Hatchard missed out). Randall also nominated for Most Courageous again, although Niamh Kelly would've been a better choice (plus every other club seems to realise captains should just be courageous anyway).

Brisbane had to nominate somebody who didn't play a game for Best First Year Player. Obviously means Pauga was ineligible, which is pretty dumb.

Ewings not nominated for both MVP and Best First Year Player by Port.

Seymour and Egan, not Sheerin and McKenzie, nominated for MVP by Richmond.

Patrikios not nominated for MVP by St Kilda. Maybe that was not a huge surprise, though Stevens was the only player league-wide to be nominated without picking up a coaches' vote throughout the season.

Hurley, not Hamilton, nominated for Best First Year Player by Sydney.

Quite an anomaly for the non-Vic to win (first/only time since Marinoff in 2017), as well as an 18yo to win (first/only time since Prespakis in 2019). So that's quite an achievement, even though 41 votes makes it look like a deceivingly underwhelming win.

Comprehensive club-by-club votes will have to wait until tomorrow, unless somebody else comes up with them first.

The All-Australian selectors could have saved themselves some embarrassment by once again paying more attention to the ladder and the difficulty of each team's fixture. Not only would it have ensured Anderson's selection, but so too her Zilmere buddy Tayla Harris (who also polled better than most expected). Both definitely had better seasons than G.Prespakis and Wakefield/Scheer/Randall respectively.

But I shan't complain too much, considering the overdue recognition for Breann Moody, whose selection became sweeter during her interview with Brihony Doucheface. Less Essendon media flogs involved in presenting next year's ceremony would be good, since they clearly can't resist injecting their self-absorbed attitude into proceedings (Sarah Jones' transparent question to the Prespakis sisters a new low).

Two of the top five in their B+F North rejects?

Top ten finishers Lauren Ahrens and Bess Keaney are also Melbourne Uni products. We provide the Suns with more key talent than Queensland does lol. Rowbottom is their first B&F winner to have not been developed at Arden Street.

The most interesting thing about the last few weeks is how the Coaches, Players and Umpires view the game and players performances, all very different which is why we have different POTY award winners. Personally, I think the Coaches award is the most credible because they sit just outside the game and are in the best position to judge who had the greatest influence on the result. The "most prized" award is probably the least credible, the Umpires have the hardest job in the game (some will say they can't even do that correctly) and their view of the game is often the narrowest as they rarely focus beyond the contest, so it has to be harder for them to properly judge who is best afield.

Jasmine Garner (NMFC)

Garner took out the AFL Coaches' Association AFLW Player of the Year Award, so it's no surprise to see fans feel the same way about the courageous Kangaroo. Garner's incredible drive - and ability to slot a sneaky goal - helped North Melbourne get over the line several times during season seven, with her value reflected in the Coles AFLW Fan Awards, being voted the fans' Most Valuable Player.

The AFL doesn't get enough credit for all the things they don't screw up. I heard that last night's ceremony was originally just going to be a barbecue at Brendon Gale's house, but Gill stepped in at the last minute and said "no! I know a guy who was a director at Crown, he can help get us a discount on a room there".

Since the topic of the AA team playing Ireland was again raised during the broadcast, let it be also said again that it's a bad idea. Either because it wouldn't be close (in the case of Aussie rules) or it would be a concept that everybody will hate on anyway (in the case of International rules).

But an Indigenous v Irish All-Stars AFLW game would be awesome, and only a predictable portion of the public would hate on it. Below are players just listed for S7 (might've missed a name or two). If injuries were an issue, perhaps replacements could be sourced by tying it into a draft combine where players vying for an AFLW contract could get an opportunity to further their case.
