I prefer a staff member text me when theyre sick. I dont wanna hear their fibs, sounding like they are on their death bed. If it's a regular thing/problem, I'll address it in person. Not gonna change anything at the time though.

I probably wouldn't appreciate someone texting me that they're sick. I'd expect a phonecall.

In this situation, the direction is to use text as the preferred method of notification, so the employee has acted appropriately and as requested. And as the employee is not in a senior role, and her tool of a boss is completely aware of her work flow, because he micro-manages everyone, the phone call was not to find out where things were at as much as to get her to do stuff that was supposedly urgent while sick.

It's in my work's company policy that you must ring up and speak to your manager live if you're going to take a day off. No voicemail. No texts. Must be a live call.

Sucks to be your manager, listening to bullshit "mental health day" excuses. Makes zero difference receiving a text or a call. Unless its an ongoing issue, whats it going to change? Micro management at it's finest.

It actually makes a big difference. The manager can run through workflow and check to make sure nothing crucial gets overlooked by the rest of the team due to you being off.

Depends on your the industry I suppose. However, if the staff member has outstanding responsibilities, I would expect them to call and discuss them. If there was nothing of significance, text away.

all flight related:

1) when i check in online how come there was only 8 seats available for my choosing?? there was more than 8 empty seats on the flight and i highly doubt everyone web checked in.... in fact when i think about there is usually only about 10 seats available when you web check in....

2) why do i need to have the window flap up when landing?? the only thing i can possibly think of is to avoid people getting a shock when landing but that seems awfully precious

3) why do (able bodied) people get on the flat travellator and then stand and ultimately end up moving slower than if they just walked like normal

1. Depends on the airline but usually you can choose your seat when you book so maybe that accounts for it.

2. Safety thing, if there's a crash on landing you (or more importantly the cabin crew/tech crew) need to be able to see outside the plane for fire/potential hazards so people don't evacuate straight to death.

i.e. You crash into a field short of the runway, people have their blinds down on the right hand side of the plane, after the crash fuel has leaked out of the right wing fuel tank and ignited. If you then open the right hand side open wing exit fire can get in/it gets very hot and wastes time that could be used getting people out the other side.

3. No idea.

Laziness. I only go on it so I can walk super fast, because I'm super childish. Worse still, I'll get on it while its not moving and pretend I'm moving faster than everyone else

Tool.

probably belonged in the "things that shit me thread" more than this one... an airport is about the only time i walk fast.

happy with explanation for the window flap being up.

still reckon there is something weird with the online check in and choosing your seat. i can't imagine all bar about 10 or so people chose their seat when booking their ticket. i think now it costs 10 bucks each way with jetstar.

Don't they provide an auto web check-in these days? So if you tick that box when buying tickets, as soon as the flight opens you'd have your seat?

interesting. never noticed. will have a look next time i book flights.

i would've thought that'd hurt jetstar in regards to delays as they will normally wait around an extra 5-10 minutes for people who are checked in but don't turn up to the gate.

whereas if everyone that has checked in is on the plane they can get out a bit quicker...

That happens anyway even with people who check in at the airport, they end up at a bar or just reading a book and don't notice the time.

If all your passengers web check in then you don't have to pay anyone to check people in at the desk.

Jetstar are about doing everything as cheaply as possible, even at the expense of safety.

I wouldn't fly with them if you paid me.

.

This may be part of the reason, but the major point is, so the flight attendants don't have to. Same with tray tables. If everyone fixes their own, it takes less time to turn the cabin around to be ready to fly out again (I know some planes here in Canberra have about 15 minutes turn around between one lot of passengers coming off, and the next lot boarding).

I can absolutely promise you, you are wrong.

It's only low cost airlines that need to regularly make such short turnarounds.

Why would they tell you to do it on a long haul 747 for example, which takes min 2.5 hours to turn around?

Sure it might make it easier for the CC, but I promise you that is not the primary reason.

Qantas makes short turnarounds here, and they are not a low cost carrier.
Yes by choice.

LCC are forced too. Tiger only have 5 aircraft (last time I checked) so they have to make such a small amount of aircraft do such a huge schedule, with really tight turnarounds.

That's why Qantas can absorb a plane being late/going tech where if it happens with Tiger, it effectively cancels one fifth of their services becuse every plane is being utilised all the time.

I'm trying to source the photo published on page 5 of the Herald Sun but I can't find it anywhere online.

Pls help. Imaginary reps.

Ah, nah, not that keen to buy it, was just interested in posting it on Facebook. It's a cracker of a photo. It's a photo of the finish of the Melbourne Cup and the crowd is in the background. In amongst the crowd is a guy dressed up as Where's Wally.

If the photographer actually meant it, I'm willing to go so far as calling them the best photographer of all time.

Did you find this?

Aware me

Explain the concept of aliases on BF, is it as simple as making a fake account or is there something more to it?
