i love my family and friends but i dont think i can live in melbourne any more.... advice please..... has anyone felt this way.

Paging SweetLeftFoot

Nicky, have consider moving out of North Fitzroy to the urban fringe? Somewhere like Eltham?

And the hipster scene hasn't reached its critical mass.

Yes I felt that way, I flew to the other side of the country at 19. Cairns and the goldcoast were both good places to live for a few years. Your mates and family will always be there doing the same thing. So don't worry about missing out on anything and experience something different.

Yes. In my case it was because of the shitful weather. 18 months and 2 winters there had me ready to top myself. Loved a lot of stuff about the place, including my job, but I just had to get out.

Personally would recommend that everybody tries living in another city some day anyway. Best way to work out what sort of lifestyle you really want, rather than just adapting to your circumstances and not really considering the alternatives.

Yeah, i moved to the UK and i am enjoying it!

And you should change your avatar nicky, it's looking less likely he is going to be at the Swans next year.

Why would you move to Bunbury? Genuine question.

I'm from here. All my friends and family are here. After being away for three years it was time to go home. After a while a city is just another city and it’s your mates which make you happy. Not to say I won’t move again, I’m looking at moving interstate next year for a change of scenery.

I lived in Melbourne for 2 years (18-20yo). Was fun at first, but quickly got sick of the place, it felt to me like the sort of place where you get into a 'rut'.

Whereas on the other hand I LOVE Canberra. As Caesar said, you have to find somewhere to suit your lifestyle (or as he said, move to another city to find yourself). The winters here suck a little, but otherwise I love it here.

Regional centres within 2-3 hours of another city are often a great way to go. Im not really into nightlife, im a day person, so clubbing/bars or lack thereof doesnt really matter to me personally.

absoutely not. i know greater melbourne, i'd rather move somewhere with nicer weather

I lived in Hobart for a couple of years. Nice pace of life, weather better than advertised (if you don't mind the cold).

Never lived in Melbourne (thank god, after about 2 days there I'm ready to GTFO), but I love Canberra too. It's cold, but not bleak and shitty like other places (Ballarat comes to mind), lots of young professionals/public lectures etc. Great place.

The weather in Melbourne for winter isn't that bad. It's colder in Canberra and in Albury. It's just that Melbourne is so bleak. Can go days and even weeks without a clear, sunny 15 degree day. Whereas in Albury, it's far colder at night, but most days are clear and you can get some sun. I get genuinely excited when Melbourne has a winter's night under 10 degrees because I know it's more likely for the next day to be clear and sunny. Just far too rare.

I'm coming up on my third year in Melbourne (after three in Sydney) and am starting to think its time for a change.

Yep, I got jack of it back in 2003 and moved to Darwin for two years. I love the heat (even got to love that rancid humidity during the wet season) but eventually came back to Melbs. Missed going to the footy the most and seeing all the great gigs Melbs has to offer. Can't say I'll stay here forever but for now, it'll do.

Imo we really should live away from our hometowns at some point, partly because most of us are lucky enough to have the chance to. I lived overseas for 3 years and then decided I wanted to move back home, when I did I knew what it was I was missing and what I would be giving up by moving back and I honestly feel like I make a lot more effort to enjoy those things I missed then I would have had I never left. Plus imo being happy with where you are or whatever is mainly attitude, there are good people, good opportunities and good times wherever you go and they'll be a whole heap of shit as well. Sometimes a real change helps you find that attitude again.

Would love to head over to QLD and have a little more consistency in warmer weather, and to live a more 'care-free' lifestyle.

This all sounds well and good in theory, but the underlying thought of leaving behind friends and family is what is stopping me at present. After Uni, if the jobs up there are in demand in my field, I could very well make the switch though. We shall see...

I have absolutely no idea. He was concerned a few weeks ago because Kennedy hadn't resigned for next season yet and it's snowballed from there.

We need to start a campaign. It's worrying that there has been no talk at all.

nicky, are you prepared to move international?

Where are you originally from?

Canberra is a weird place. There's barely anyone around. Saying that, the galleries and museums are super interesting. Even as a 14-year old, I really loved it, but there's way too much to see.
