The 3rd Annual BomberBlitz.com Phantom AFL Draft : Thursday, November 18th, 2004
By Awesome_Scotty
Priority Picks
1. Brett Deledio (Murray Bushrangers/Victoria) - Richmond
Position: Onballer/Forward Height: 188cm Weight: 80kg
Deledio is pretty much everything you could want in a footballer, he is quick, hard at the ball, takes a good grab and has little or no flaws in his game. Richmond has shown plenty of interest in him, even though they have been trying to hide it from the media. Richmond will want to select the ‘best available’ player with their first pick. Many would think Deledio would be the best and safest player to choose with pick 1.
2. Richard Tambling (Southern Districts/Northern Territory) – Hawthorn
Position: Onballer/Forward Height: 181cm Weight: 74kg
The super quick and talented aboriginal footballer from Northern Territory, looks set to joins the Hawks next season. Some say he is a risky pick-up, however I think otherwise he is an exciting and gifted footballer. Like Deledio, Tambling dominated most of the tests at the National AFL Draft Camp. Hawthorn have said if Richmond take Deledio with pick 1 then they will grab Tambling at two.
3. Jarred Roughead (Gippsland Power/Victoria) – Western Bulldogs
Position: Key Position Height: 193cm Weight: 85kg
This is a tricky selection. Will the Doggies select a KPP or go with the ‘best available’ (Griffen)? I figured that the Doggies would select a KPP player in Jarred Roughead (who is the best available KPP at this pick) ahead of Ryan Griffen as they picked up 2 midfielders (Cooney & Ray) with their first picks in last years draft. Roughead would fit in at the Doggies well as he is a bottom-age tall prospect who can play at either centre-half forward or centre-half back. I put him ahead of Franklin ‘cos he is a Victorian and Franklin has some really close family in WA.
First Round
4. Lance Franklin (Perth/Western Australia) – Richmond
Position: Centre-Half Forward Height: 193cm Weight: 88kg
The tall, pacy KPP from WA looks like he will be heading to Richmond. You would believe that Richmond would pick up a KPP after picking up a midfielder with their number one pick. Franklin has impressed many in WA with his mobility and athletic ability and has dominated games from CHF. He should be a good replacement for Ottens in years to come. If Terry Wallace thinks otherwise we might see the Tigers take Griffen here.
5. Ryan Griffen (South Adelaide/South Australia) – Hawthorn
Position: Onballer Height: 187cm Weight: 85kg
Griffen is an onballer with excellent footy skills. He has captained the South Australia U/18’s in the past two years and has more leadership skills than the previous four picks. Griffen is extremely versatile, he can play running of half-back, in the forward line, on the ball or in the middle. Griffen would be the ‘best available’ pick from pick after Tambling and Deledio but it depends on what a particular clubs needs are and the Hawks have indicated that they will pick up the ‘best available’ with their first two picks. Franklin would be in the mix if Griffen is picked up earlier.
6. Angus Monefries (Sturt/South Australia) - Western Bulldogs
Position: Onballer Height: 180cm Weight: 70kg
As one of the better performing midfielders, the Doggies would be happy to pick up Angus Monefries at pick 6 after picking up a quality KPP at pick three. Monefries is a small midfielder which may concern some clubs but his one-percenters, clean hand, endurance and aggression at the football make up for it. However, his height shouldn’t be too much of a worry, as he is a bottom age draftee and will still have some growth left in him. The Doggies will probably take a gamble on Tom Williams if they get Griffen with pick three.
7. John Meesen (Geelong Falcons/Victoria) - Hawthorn
Position: Ruckman Height: 200cm Weight: 88kg
Meesen is one of the best performed ruckmen at TAC Cup level this season. He has good endurance, finishing in the top 10 of the 3km time trial at Draft Camp. The Hawks have made it public that they will pick up a ruckman with pick seven and Meesen looks like the best available ruckman at that stage. He should fit in well at Hawthorn as he is a Victorian and he wouldn’t take much time to develop as he is a top age ruckman as opposed to Cameron Wood of SA.
8. Cameron Wood (West Adelaide/South Australia) - Adelaide
Position: Ruckman Height: 203cm Weight: 86kg
Wood, a bottom age ruckman will still have some growth in him but he will take some time to develop with him ample frame. Cameron has shown plenty of ability with his tap-work in the ruck and he has barely lost a ruck hit-out for West Adelaide this season. Adelaide are in a position where they need a midfielder and a ruckman. If Monefries isn’t available at pick 8, the Crows will look at drafting Wood. Home grown talent will also appeal to the Crows about Wood as he is originally South Australian.
9. Matthew Bate (Eastern Rangers/Victoria) – Carlton
Position: CHB/Full Forward Height: 190cm Weight: 85kg
Carlton are in search of both a quality tall defender and a ruckman as they seem to have enough talls up forward & their midfield is pretty good. Matthew Bate is a bottom age quality tall who can play at both ends of the ground if need be. Even though Bate will need to grow a bit it, it shouldn’t bother clubs as he is a bottom-age player and still has some growth in him. Some would say Bate has moved up the draft order after winning the Morrish Medal (best player in TAC Cup) this year. I chose Bate ahead of a ruckman for Carlton as there won’t be many quality talls in the latter part of the draft.
10. Ben Eckerman (Sturt/South Australia) – Collingwood
Position: Onballer/HBF Height: 178cm Weight: 77kg
Another player from SA, Eckerman is a small quick, agile and has a long kick. He might drop down the draft order a bit but players like Schammer have shown that you don’t have to be 6 foot plus to be a good onballer. I think Collingwood will take Eckerman because they have said that they want to add some pace to their midfield. Eckerman would be the best available quick and skilled onballer at pick ten. Danny Meyer might come into contention here.
11. Danny Meyer (Glenelg/South Ausralia) – Port Adelaide
Position: Wing/Forward Height: 183cm Weight: 70kg
Yet again, another South Australian onballer! Danny is a classy wingman that is a good disposal with both feet. He has been working on his leg power over the past few years, which has helped him with his vertical jumps, sprints and endurance. Port Adelaide would be looking for a replacement for the recent departure of Josh Carr (to Fremantle). After two consecutive incidents with both Nick Stevens and Josh Carr leaving the club to go home Port would want to pick up a home grown talent.
12. Fabain Deluca (Eastern Rangers/Victoria) – Richmond
Position: Ruckman Height: 201cm Weight: 96kg
A bottom age ruckman who is agile, athletic and can take a good mark. I didn’t put him down as going any earlier because he would take time to develop and hasn’t performed as well as the likes of Meesen and Wood. No doubt, Carlton will consider picking him at pick nine. Richmond will look to add to their future ruck stocks after picking up an onballer and a KPP, also with the recent exit of Ottens.
13. Heath Grundy (Norwood/South Australia) – Melbourne
Position: CHF/Key Position Height: 190cm Weight: 86kg
Heath is in-between size tall who played at both ends of the field when playing for Norwood. One thing might fret clubs is that he is a top-age player at 190cm and might be a bit small to play KPP. He would probably be used as a third tall or something rather than a true KPP. Melbourne would want to add to their defence stocks as they’re very light on in that department. Nicholson is their number one key defender and he's just an average player. Rivers had a great year in the back half but he's very attacking
14. Ryan Willits (Northern Knights/Victoria) – Essendon
Position: CHB/Full Forward Height: 197cm Weight: 96kg
Ryan Willits is a tank for someone his age. He is powerfully built and he can play at both ends of the ground without much trouble. His kicking on set-shots could be a major problem but it could be fixed up in due time. Essendon are looking for tall key position players to at CHF or in defence and Willits easily fits that category. Sheedy likes big tall athletic blokes so we could see him going to Essendon ahead of some of the other KPP’s. Kirby, Murphy and Toovey would be in the mix here.
15. Tom Williams (Morningside/Queensland) – Melbourne
Position: Key Position Height: 195cm Weight: 86kg
Williams has only been playing footy since November last year and he could be a big gamble but he is highly rated as he has picked up the game really fast. He is tall, athletic, knows where the goals are, and agile. Tom is the hardest draftee to place in the draft as he can rate anywhere from pick 6 to not getting drafted at all. I’ve got him to get drafted by Melbourne because Melbourne really needs some good, tall KPP. Williams could turn into a decent back-man if he fixes up some of the flaws in his game. Toovey and Kirkby will be closely looked at by the Demons here.
16. Ryan Jackson (Northern Knights/Victoria) - Richmond
Position: Onballer/Forward Height: 186cm Weight: 75kg
Ryan Jackson has heaps of room for improvement despite missing plenty of the year. He is a classy half-forward flanker and has good endurance. When playing in the forward line he does tend to get the ball regularly and convert them to goals. Richmond needs a decent forward for the future and Jackson is versatile, able to play midfield and up forward. He should develop well in years to come under Wallace.
17. Jordan Lewis (Geelong Falcons/Victoria) – St Kilda
Position: Onballer Height: 186cm Weight: 87kg
Jordan Lewis averaged 30+ possessions in the TAC Cup this season. Jordan is physically capable for AFL and can take a good mark. Although he isn’t terribly quick, his work ethic and footy smarts make up for it. St Kilda will be looking to draft Lewis as a replacement for Harvey in years to come, as he is a similar type of player. Other players that will be looked at by St Kilda here are Sharp and Jackson.
18. Thomas Murphy (Sandringham Dragons/Victoria) - Brisbane
Position: CHF Height: 190cm Weight: 84kg
Murphy is probably too short too play CHF at AFL level but given that he is a bottom-age player there is no doubt he would be able to grow over the next year or two and cement a true key position role. Tom has a good kick, moves very well for a tall and is a good mark. Brisbane will be look for a KPP to replace the recent retirement of veteran, Alistair Lynch. Other talls will come into consideration here by the Lions if they think Murphy is too short to fill their hole.
19. Thomas Redden (Glenelg/South Australia) – Port Adelaide
Position: Key Position Height: 190cm Weight: 74kg
Redden is another in-between height player – too tall to play midfield and too short for key position. He is a tall midfielder that can play KPP as well, similarly to Mackie of Geelong. He is versatile, which should appeal to many clubs. Port Adelaide will pick up a KPP with their second pick if they pick up an onballer with their first. Redden will also appeal to them because he is from South Australia.
Second Round
20. Ruory Kirkby (Bendigo/Victoria) – Richmond
Position: CHF/CHB Height: 192cm Weight: 81kg
I think Richmond will pick up a Defender after getting an onballer, KPP, ruckman, onballer/forward. They really need to fill the gap with Zantuck most likely to leave and their defence is getting old.
21. Ben Sharp (Oakleigh/Victoria) – Hawthorn
Position: Onballer/HBF Height: 187cm Weight: 74kg
Hawthorn would want to pick up more onballers to add to their midfield and take the best available from here on in. Sharp is more of an out-side player.
22. Alan Toovey (Claremont/Western Australia) – Western Bulldogs
Position: Defender Height: 190cm Weight: 77kg
The Bulldogs would want to pick up a KPP defender such as Alan Toovey as they defence is getting old. Drafting Toovey would be looking at helping their defence in the future.
23. Jordan Russell (West Adelaide/South Australia) – Collingwood
Position: Half-Back Flank Height: 186cm Weight: 74kg
Jordan Russell is a quick half-back, who can play on the wing and take a good mark as well. Collingwood will be looking to invest in some more of the quicker midfielders/flankers, Russell fits into their category perfectly.
24. Chris Egan (Murray Bushrangers/Victoria) – Adelaide
Position Onballer/HFF Height: 187cm Weight: 78kg
Egan is one of the quickest onballers that are to be drafted. Good at goal, strong handballer, has a booming kick and an enormous vertical leap. As I said earlier Adelaide are looking for a ruckman and onballer. If they get a ruckman with pick 8 then they’ll get an onballer with pick 24. McQualter will be in the mix here.
25. Ivan Maric (Calder Cannons/Victoria) – Carlton
Position: Ruckman Height: 197cm Weight: 95kg
Maric is the last of the quality ruckmen in the draft pool, he has improve dramatically over the past year and still can improve more. Ivan can be used up forward if needed to kick goals. Carlton possibly needs another ruckman - French is OK but no star in their side and their only other ruckman is Deluca.
26. Adam Pattison (Northern Knights/Victoria) – Hawthorn
Position: CHF Height: 195cm Weight: 87kg
Pattison was a vast improver over 2004 TAC Cup season. Great work ethic, can cover plenty of distance finishing in the top 10 for both the beep test and 3km time trial at draft camp. The Hawks will be look for a KPP, for the recent departure of Nathan Thompson to Kangaroos. The Hawks will also look at Adam Harlett and other talls here.
27. Andrew McQualter (Gippsland Power/Victoria) – Brisbane
Position: Onballer Height: 179cm Weight: 73kg
McQualter is a hard working midfielder with good work ethic. At draft camp he finished in the top 3 of the agility, 3km time trail and beep test. He is a good leader as well, he captained Vic Country this year. Brisbane would usually be looking at picking the ‘best available’ and at this pick McQualter is the best available.
28. Adam Harlett (West Adelaide/South Australia) - Adelaide
Position: FB/CHB Height: 194cm Weight: 83kg
Harlett is a top-age defender who can play at either end of the ground. He was overlooked in last year’s draft. The Crows would want to add to their KPP stocks with Carey retiring and Clarke probably retiring next season. Harlett being from South Australia should also appeal to them.
29. Chad Gibson (Norwood/South Autralia) – West Coast
Position: Ruck/Forward Height:194cm Weight: 93kg
No doubt Chad Gibson would be ready for AFL with his physical build. He is a strong over-head mark but he will take time to develop as he is too small to ruck but he could become a KPP. West Coast would be happy with picking up Chad Gibson as they would need some to replace Jakovich. Might look at some other KPP’s here such as Wilkes and Copping.
30. Dean Polo (Gippsland Power/Victoria) - Essendon
Position: Onballer Height: 187cm Weight: 78cm
Polo is more of an in and under onballer, a type of player Sheeds would like. He won Gippsland’s best and fairest (ahead of Roughead and McQualter) and he has good endurance. Polo would have to work on his disposal a bit and bulk up. Essendon will be look at add one onballer (at least) to their brigade after the delisting of Darren Walsh. Essendon will look at Bain as well but he is more of an outside player.
31. Ryan Bain (Oakleigh Chargers/Victoria) – Sydney
Position: Onballer Height: 184cm Weight: 81kg
Sydney have made it clear that they will be looking for onballers and get the ‘best available’. I think Bain would be the ‘best available’ onballer at this pick. Bain is an outside midfielder that does like to kick a goal and he is a good finisher.
32. Lynden Dunn (Calder Cannons/Victoria) – Geelong
Position: Full Forward/Full Back Height: 192cm Weight: 90kg
Geelong will want to draft some tall forwards, if Ben Graham leaves and etc. Dunn is a bottom-age player that can play at both ends of the ground. Lynden Dunn has played well for the Cannons all year, primarily at full forward but his conversion rate isn’t too flash. If ‘Bomber’ Thompson can improve his kicking over time he should be a good pick up.
33. Beau Wilkes (Claremont/Western Australia) – St Kilda
Position: Full Forward Height: 193cm Weight: 90kg
Wilkes would be more of a project player that would take some time to develop. Wilkes would had to St Kilda’s dominant forward line an he would be an adequate replacement for Gehrig in years to come. Saints might as look at turning him into a backman as they are in need of a few.
34. Scott McMahon (South Australia) – Port Adelaide
Position: Half-back flank Height: 184cm Weight: 83kg
Port no doubt be looking into the future after winning a premiership this year. They will be looking at draft some more onballers and flankers. McMahon is the best available onballer/flanker at this stage. Port would also be content to pick him up as he is a South Australian.
35. Justin Sherman (Clarence/Tasmania) – Port Adelaide
Position: Onballer Height: 183cm Weight: 85kg
Justin is physically built to play at AFL level. He is a medium-sized midfielder and his kicking isn’t too bad. Sherman isn’t too quick though and needs to work on the defensive side of his game. He would be a good addition to Port’s ever growing midfield.
Third Round
36. Mark LeCras (West Perth/Western Australia) – Richmond
Position: Onballer Height: 183cm Weight: 84kg- a good onballer from WA, would be a good addition to Richmond’s midfield
37. Michael Newton (Murray Bushrangers/Victoria) – West Coast
Position: Full Forward/Full Back Height: 192cm Weight: 82kg- bottom age player, will grow and improve over time
38. Benet Copping (Sturt/South Australia) – Western Bulldogs
Position: CHB Height: 191cm Weight: 71kg- will take time to develop with ample frame but worth the risk with a third round pick - think the doggies would need more KPP’s
39. Travis Cloke (Eastern Rangers/Victoria) – Collingwood (F/S)
Position: Full Forward/Ruck Height: 195cm Weight: 88kg- first pick under father/son rule; bigger than the other Clokes at Collingwood
40. Matt Little (Calder Cannons/Victoria) – Adelaide
Position: Full Forward Height: 187cm Weight: 74kg- has a small frame, kicked plenty of goals (more than 4 a game) and he could be a goal sneak for Adelaide and create some spark in their forward line. Might miss out like Herrington last year because full forwards aren’t supposed to be small.
41. Luke Blackwell (Swan District/Western Australia) – Carlton (F/S)
Position: Wing Height: 177cm Weight: 70kg- proven footballer, but might be too small to play AFL - one would think he would need to become a good goal sneak if he is to succeed at AFL, however he isn’t too quick off the mark
42. Jesse W. Smith (Calder Cannons/Victoria) – Kangaroos (F/S)
Position: Half-back flank Height: 190cm Weight: 80kg- Kangaroos should be happy with picking up a potential top ten pick under the father/son rule
43. Chris Gooley (Sandringham/Victoria) – Melbourne
Position: Full Forward Height: 193cm Weight: 84kg- would be a good addition to Melb’s KPP stocks as they need
44. Mitch Morton (Claremont/Western Australia) – West Coast
Position: Onballer Height: 184cm Weight: 73kg-has awesome footy skills but he will need to put some weight on before playing AFL like most kids. - a steal for West Cost under the father/son rules as Morton would have been a first round draft pick
45. Andrew Swallow (East Fremantle/Western Australia) – Brisbane
Position: Onballer Height: 181cm Weight: 75kg- best available onballer that Brisbane would snap up immediately - in and under midfielder and has a lot of room for improvement
46. Jarred Moore (Dandenong/Victoria) – Essendon * Should be Gilham not Moore
Position: Centre Height: 178cm Weight: 84kg
- tough nut midfielder and as great work ethic - some think he might go later but knowing Sheeds he’d love to get another tough-nut like MJ and Solly
47. Nick Becker (Calder Cannons/Victoria) - Sydney
Position: Wing Height: 186cm Weight: 78kg- would continue with sydney’s intention of picking up midfielders - out side midfielder, can nail targets and has a big left foot kick
48. Nathan Ablett (Modewarre/Victoria) – Geelong (F/S)- hasn't even played a game of senior footy - there are big expectations of Nathan being son of Gary and that his brother plays for the Cats as well
49. Toby Stirbling (North Adelaide/South Australia) – St Kilda
Position: Onballer Height: 178cm Weight: 78kg- Saints will want to add some more onballers to their arsenal - Schammer type player, would add some pace into the saints midfield and he is a reasonably safe selection this late
50. Andrew Lee (Tasmania) – Brisbane
Position: CHB/CHF Height: 194cm Weight: 83kg- Potential key position player - strong mark, good kick - played senior VFL level in 2004
51. Jayden Attard (Dandenong/Victoria) – Port Adelaide
Position: Back Pocket Height: 187cm Weight: 81kg- hard working defender who goes in hard at the ball

Position: Onballer Height: 180cm Weight: 70kg
As one of the better performing midfielders, the Doggies would be happy to pick up Angus Monefries at pick 6 after picking up a quality KPP at pick three. 10. Ben Eckerman (Sturt/South Australia) – Collingwood
Position: Onballer/HBF Height: 178cm Weight: 77kg

Fourth Round
52. Jesse D. Smith (Calder Cannons/Victoria) – Richmond
Position: Onballer/Centre

Position: Midfielder

Position: Ruckman
57. Danyle Pearce (Sturt/South Australia) – West Coast
Position: Short wingman
58. Troy Barlett (NSW) – Kangaroos
Position: HFF
59. Paul Richardson (WA) – Fremantle
Position: Back Pocket/Onballer
60. Dale May (Calder Cannons) – Essendon
Position: Goal kicking midfielder
61. Brent Primsal (Western Jets) - Sydney
Position: Onballer
62. Matt Egan (Geelong Reserves) – Geelong
Position: Full Back
63. Cain Ackland (Port Adelaide) – St Kilda
Position: Ruckman - Port Reject
64. Jess Wells (Tasmania) – Brisbane

Position: Hawk Hack
66. Pass – Collingwood
